Story
Meet Butters, a charming Greyhound mix with a heart as big as his personality. His spirit is infectious; his energy is boundless. He's the perfect companion for those who love active, playful days and appreciate the quieter moments of cuddly companionship. Butters' friendly and goofy nature is sure to bring joy to any home. His sweet demeanor makes him a wonderful friend to both adults and children alike. Adopt Butters, and let his love and liveliness fill your life with laughter and happiness. Dogs are generally tested with dogs of their size in a group setting, and dog meet-and-greets with the adopter's dog(s) are always encouraged. A cat test may be conducted at the adopter's request but should only be used as a general-purpose screening to rule out overt aggression. We always recommend caution when introducing dogs to cats in the home. Recommendations on the suitability of placement with children by their ages are based on behavioral observations including energy level and response to body handling. We never recommend leaving young children unsupervised with dogs, and we cannot guarantee the behavior of dogs with children, other pets, or cats. Behavioral observations in the shelter environment should be considered as a snapshot of the behavior of the dog at a given point in time and may not be indicative of a dog's overall mental health. The Joplin Humane Society believes all adopters need to be prepared to invest time and energy into working with their new dog, as animals arrive at the shelter from a variety of situations and scenarios and may have had little to no prior training. Dogs should never be fed together unless it is known that they do not possess resource-guarding tendencies. We always encourage adopters to research the breeds or mixes of breeds before adoption as many can have unique characteristics that may or may not fit into their families. Keep in mind that the transition from the shelter to a home environment is stressful for dogs, and the Rule of 3 should be used as a rule of thumb when introducing a dog to their new surroundings. For the first 3 days, fear, anxiety, and stress levels are at their highest; and dogs may appear lethargic, remain hidden, are easily excitable, or have a loss of appetite. In the next 3 weeks, dogs will be actively developing a routine, and new personality traits may appear as stress levels decrease. During this period, it is recommended that adopters limit the dog's exposure to new people and places as they adjust and keep them in a crate or designated quiet room when left alone. Time outside of the home should be short, and crowds or loud noise should be avoided. After 3 months, a bond has developed between the dogs and their new family, and the animal should appear more comfortable in unfamiliar situations. Story
I just love to give kisses and love to my humans and follow my foster mom around the house like a shadow.   I’m very easy going and hardly ever bark.  I get excited when I see squirrels and I will try very diligently to keep them out of your backyard!  I am smart, too! I have picked up fast on how to only go outside to do my business and am going up and down the stairs like a pro.  I get along well with my foster siblings I have two other greyhounds and two cats in my home right now and everyone gets along great.  I let my mom dress me up in teeshirts and coats and check my feet.   I’m basically your perfect greyhound girl! We adopt within 1 1/2 hours from Kansas City.December 17, 2024, 12:14 am

Story
Hi there, I’m Kip, your future best friend! I am a happy-go-lucky guy who gets along great with my foster dog brothers and have gotten a pretty good hang of doing the potty thing outside. I am a pro at keeping the yard safe – no squirrel or bird is getting past me without a very serious chase (I’m fast, don’t underestimate me)! When I’m not patrolling the perimeter, you’ll find me following you around like a little shadow, just hoping for some human love. I’m very into pets, belly rubs and the occasional zoomies to let off all that excitement. I enjoy going for walks, but when it’s time to relax, I’m laid-back and totally chill. I will pretty much sleep on anything, but don’t be surprised if I sneak into your bed for some cozy snuggles— I’m just living my best life. If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate, happy companion, who will make you laugh and keep you on your toes with my squirrel – chasing antics, I might just be your guy! We adopt within 1 1/2 hours of Kansas City.    November 30, 2024, 5:23 pm

Story
Gentle Joey, 3 years old, not cat safe  Hi my name is Joey and I’m just a young boy looking for love and a forever home! I am as sweet and gentle as can be and love giving you little kisses. I love following my foster parents around the house to see what they’re up to because I love being involved! Since I’m young (just three!) I love playing with toys! I can keep myself entertained just tossing around whatever toys you give me. I also love running around the backyard. I am a goofy boy who loves to roach and spread out on my bed. You’ll notice I love to be silly! Although in true greyhound fashion I love my naps and cuddles! I am good on leash but I am interested in seeing what those darn squirrels are up to! I get along well with my foster fur siblings and am learning all of the house rules very quickly. I’m also becoming a master at potty training. My foster parents think I’m a beautiful boy who will be the perfect addition to my future family.  We adopt within 1 1/2 hour from Kansas CityNovember 27, 2024, 4:26 pm

Story
Meet Darcy Darcy is a 40-pound female Greyhound-Rottweiler mix born on December 27, 2023. She’s currently living in an apartment but would do best in a home with a yard where she can run and play freely. About Darcy: • Affectionate and Playful: Darcy loves attention and is very energetic. Once she warms up to people, she’s friendly and enjoys being part of the action. • Trained: She knows sit, paw, and wait/stay, and she walks well on a leash. • Apartment-Trained: She knows where to go for bathroom needs, though she would benefit from outdoor space. • Quirks: Darcy has a habit of whining at the microwave but is otherwise well-behaved. Health: • Darcy is spayed and up-to-date on vaccinations (next due in 2025). She has no known health issues. Why We’re Rehoming: We adopted Darcy from a shelter when she was young. However, as she’s grown, it’s clear she needs more space and activity than we can provide in an apartment. We want to find her a home that suits her energetic nature
