Story
Hi! I'm Callie. I'm a gorgeous 2+ years old Pyrenees/Lab mix! I arrived at the kennel in late October, so I haven't been there too long. I've had a hard time over the last year. I was a stray for most of that time. A friendly postal worker noticed me and kept an eye on me. Eventually she and another good samaritan trapped me and took me in while they found a great rescue for me to come to. Of course I was very scared and intimidated when I first arrived at GRRAND. I would curl up in the corner of my kennel and not want to come out. But the kennel volunteers would sit with me in my run for hours, calmly petting and reassuring me that everything was about to get so much better - and they were right. Now I get to run and play with a ton of dogs in the play yard. I have so many new friends. I willingly go to the volunteers now for love and treats. We even go walking off-site and they tell me how wonderful I am on a leash. I get to sleep in a nice warm kennel with a blanket. I get two meals a day and as many treats as I can convince the vols to give me. It's so much better than living alone in deserted structures and dumpster diving for food! So I've come a really long way. I'm liking other dogs, trusting people and starting to enjoy life indoors! I think it's time for the next stage of my life where I can move in with a loving family. Could you help get me out of the kennel and into your loving family? I hope so! Callie was initially very scared and withdrawn, but with lots of love and attention from our awesome volunteers, she is starting to come out of her shell.  She is very calm and sweet. Our vet thinks she's around 2.5 years old. She loves to play with most other dogs in the play yards, as long as they are calm and laid-back. We also have her walking on a leash and she's doing wonderfully. She loves to be gently petted.  She is still a little timid with people she doesn't know, but warms as soon as she trusts you.  Until Callie is settled in a home she is going to be a flight risk, so she does need a secure fenced yard. She can scale a 4' fence, so ideally the home will have a 6' privacy fence.  She can go with another calm dog. As she is a flight risk pup she will not be able to go in a home with children under 13. We don't know how she does with cats. She does not mess in her kennel run, which is a decent indication she is house trained, but not a guarantee. Her energy level is moderate to low.  Callie is now ready for her next step, to go to a home, either foster or adoptive. Please fill out an app at GRRAND.org if you would like to meet her! ##1854181##

Story
Lizzie is one of Winter's 10 puppies born Jan 22! They are - the Pride and Prejudice litter! Lizzie is a 9 month old Great Pyrenees mix and has been waiting for her forever family! She is in a new foster home and this is what they have to say:  "Lizzie is what I call an Adnap (Panda spelled backwards because of her reverse Panda markings), 9 months old, very sweet, playful, loves everyone and everything and deserves to find a great home of her own. I cannot fathom why she has lingered for so long! She does have crystals in her urine and will require prescription dog food for urine health, but Purina has it, Hills has it and it is not expensive. She is wonderful!! Lizzie has adjusted nicely since being in our home. She has found success in her crate and was potty trained within the first day- not a single accident in the house! She is respectful of our dog and is learning boundaries with out cats, who she is very interested in, but is showing no signs of aggression to at all. For a 7 month old puppy, this girl has a VERY calm temperament and is walking well on leash. She knows how to sit, and we are now working on other basic commands. Lizzie is a TOTAL Love Bug! She just wants to be near one of us at all times and would love cuddles and belly scratches all day if we would! She is really quite the gem, and will make a wonderful companion to a very happy family"! Any applicant with children under the age of 16, will require a home with direct access to a securely fenced yard... meaning direct access to the yard from the home… so this means no apartments or condos.  Applicants should also expect Winter's puppies to possibly be big, and you should be prepared for that sweet and independent Great Pyrenees personality... to know the Great Pyr breed is to love them, but they are not Goldens, and we suggest you do some research on this beautiful breed before applying! She will need a secure above ground fenced yard as Great Pyrs love to be in their yard to protect and patrol, and this happens best when they are in a secure space!  If you are interested in meeting Lizzie, please fill out an application at GRRAND.org ##1944333##

Story
Arlo is a very handsome 6 year old, 85ish lb, Great Pyrenees/Golden Retriever mix looking for a home where he is the only dog, and has an above ground fenced yard to roam and chill out in like most Great Pyrs love to do. He has full run of the house when his people are away and sleeps wherever he wants at night. He is said to LOVE to cuddle and snuggle, and is really just a great companion! Sadly his people do not have a yard for him anymore and he needs more space and attention, and some work on walking on a leash. We are still learning about this sweet boy, so please check back, but if you would like to meet Arlo in the meantime please fill out an app at GRRAND.org ##2065786##

Story
Handsome Hank! He is a 2 year old, 77ish lb, (should be 100lbs or so) Great Pyrenees who came to GRRAND as a stray from a rural shelter in KY, and went directly to our amazing Great Pyr foster mom (who has GRRAND dog Snow right now too)! She says Hank came to her with hookworms, giardia and coccidia, horrible matting of his fur (hence his new hair cut) and.is going to be a work in progress, as he has had no socialization (however he loves people), never been in a building or, non the less a home and everything is new to him. This is going to be a process for him, but his love for people gives him comfort and will help him learn it will all be ok! He was in a foster home and is now at the GRRAND kennel and they say: "Hank has now been at the kennel for almost two weeks. He is adorable; a gentle giant! Our newest, most inexperienced kennel volunteers are allowed to take him out to play and to love on him. We have him running with a large group of other kennel dogs (well, he methodically plods along behind the pack), and he does great. He is very happy to lay his giant head on your lap and let you pet him for hours! He was neutered yesterday (10/9), and weighed in at 76 lbs. He still needs to pack some pounds on, and we are feeding him three times a day at the kennel to help with that. He is an excellent walker; no pulling and doesn't react to squirrels etc. He does have some separation anxiety so Hank will need to go to a home where someone is around most of the time. Please consider taking this sweet boy into your home." His foster mom said "Hank is a beautiful, young and totally neglected boy. Underneath all those mats is an emaciated skeleton of a dog. But shining forth despite that abuse, is a loving soul who followed me around the yard as I mowed and waited by the gate for me to finish mowing the front yard so I could come back to pet him. Hank loves to lean against a person to be scratched and petted. Hank just went to the vet to get all those mats shaved off (see pics) and start getting the medical care he needs. He has a lovely calm temperament, and one of these days, Hank will be as beautiful on the outside as he is on the inside. And... The pics show Hank getting his first bath. I have never seen spotted fur on a Pyr before. They all have spotted skin, but not fur that I have seen before and it is beautiful!  And right after his bath, of course, I went in to fix his food and the little turkey rubbed against the wood fence, getting himself filthy!!! LOL! Typical Great Pyr! He is still skeptical of going inside, but is getting better everyday and daily walks help him decompress some. He gets along well with my female Pyr, but he has no idea how to play just yet. Time... it takes time"! Sept 23 UPDATE! "Hank is getting better about entering a building. Voluntarily goes inside now. Still not a fan of a kennel, but he is a big lover and even follows me behind me when I am mowing the yard. How many dogs do that?! Hank just wants someone to devote his life to. He's not a big player with other dogs, right now, he's more focused on me. But has shown zero aggression toward other dogs. Just hangs out rather than plays".  Hank is looking for a home with a fenced in yard, as the Great Pyrenees breed love nothing more than to hang out in the yard, patrol a little here and there and watch the world go by. Great Pyrs and Goldens are not the same, and we suggest you do some research to find out their breed similiarities and differences before applying. If you are a Great Pyrenees lover, you will know their delightful stubborness is what makes them so fun and challenging just the same!! If you are not familiar with the breed, to know the Great Pyr is to LOVE the Great Pyr"! Stay tuned for more updates, but if you would like to meet Handsome Hank, please fill out an app at GRRAND.org ##2180249##

Story
Rookie is in a foster home and this is what she says: Rookie is a 6 month old Pyrador!!! He looks like a Lab, but he has single dew claws on each back leg so there are Great Pyrenees in his DNA somewhere, so we are going with that! Rookie is estimated to be around 60 lbs when full grown. He is in a foster home and she says:  "Rookie was my foster puppy this past summer. Two months ago, he was adopted only to be returned last week due to being too much of a puppy for the elderly Shih Tzus in the house. Rookie is a leggy, Lab mix puppy, approximately 6-7 months old who loves to play with and hang out other dogs and people and just in general enjoy life to the fullest. He is really enjoying playing with my other foster dogs, Arnold, Myka and Lizzie." "Ok, I have to update Rookie’s bio to tell you what this puppy is really like and this may not be pretty LOL!! Rookie is a drama king!!! He THINKS he has kung fu fighting skills and shows off his wresting style whenever he can (see photo of him with Carson). He believes lawn mowers are out to get him and barks the alarm! If you walk inside for a minute while he is outside, Rookie will whine a couple of times to let you know he profoundly feels your desertion and how dare you?! If he can’t run right to his food, he runs around frantically yelping while trying to get to his bowl before he starves. Rookie is literally unable to show people and other dogs enough of the love he feels for them. And lastly and the most embarrassing thing about Rookie…he thinks he is a bug hunter extraordinaire. He loves to dramatically pounce on bugs he finds in the yard! So... we gave it to you straight... Never a dull moment or never a smile on your face when you are with this dude.  This boy loves people, but can be shy at first. He is submissive to adult dogs, but once a friendship is started, Rookie is a wonderful doggie playmate, as he is hanging out with GRRAND dog Carson right now, and they LOVE to play!!! Rookie is very food motivated and will be easy to train and he automatically sits when his food bowl is offered. As far as housebreaking is concerned, Rookie has not had a single accident in his foster home which is awesome for a four month old puppy. Rookie has it all. He is an adorable, playful puppy, full of love and motivated to be a well-trained adult dog. What else could anyone wish for in a new companion"?   As he is just a puppy, he will need a home that abides by the GRRAND puppy guidelines: Puppies are a lot of work, and if you are interested in a GRRAND puppy and have children, PLEASE SEE THE ADOPTION FAQs section of the website for more detailed info. GRRAND policies stipulate a few important things that may stop you from applying, and here are 2 big ones- A: GRRAND will NOT place a puppy under the age of 6 months with families with children under 6 yrs old  B: Any applicant with children under the age of 16, will require a home with direct access to a securely fenced yard... meaning direct access to the yard from the home… so this means no apartments or condos.  This boy will need a home that can offer him the exercise and direction he needs to grow up to be a good puppy!  As we learn more, we will update, but if you would like to meet Rookie, please fill out an app at GRRAND.org ##2079775##

Story
Maria is a 6 month old Great Pyrenees/Akbash mix who was born outside on a sheep farm with her siblings Riley and Leo. Leo has been adopted and Maria and Riley are a bonded pair who need to be adopted together. They were recently adopted and they are a bonded pair of girls who are house trained and really sweet pups. The only reason they were returned is because a family member in the home became very allergic and the family is devastated that they couldn’t keep them, but the doctor said absolutely no. When they were surrendered to GRRAND, they had not lived in a house yet, but responded well in the kennel, and are relatively calm pups with a really great temperament. They are very easy puppies to manage with laid back personalities. They lived in a setting with 9 other dogs, so they are great with dogs and should also be fine with cats. The kennel volunteers say anyone getting these pups is very lucky! Great Pryr/Akbash is a Guardian Dog breed that we suggest you do research on before applying for this cutie, as there are differences between LGD breeds and Golden Retrievers. They will be looking for a loving foster or forever family, with a secure fenced yard as LGD's love to be in their yard to protect and patrol, and this happens best when they are in a secure space! They will be looking for a home that abides by the GRRAND puppy guidelines: Puppies are a lot of work, and if you are interested in a GRRAND puppy and have children, PLEASE SEE THE ADOPTION FAQs section of the website for more detailed info. If you would like to meet Riley, please fill out an app at GRRAND.org ##2140324##

Story
Ivory came from a family member who rescued her from a shelter to live on their farm. They didn’t know she had special needs and separation anxiety. She wouldn’t stay home. They were going to return her, but I took her 9 years ago; estimated around 11 years old. I am married with 6 children. The children are older and no longer give her attention, and I cannot be with her 24/7. My husband doesn’t like her, but tolerated her for my sake, and has shelled out big bucks for her care. Our finances are tight, and Ivory has required more care as a senior. She is super sweet, but she needs full-time attention. She wants to sleep indoors, but have access to outdoors. She requires a secure fence. She is crate trained. We have had numerous cats over the years, which she tolerated and mostly avoided. My husband and son are planning to surrender her at the local shelter if I can’t find Ivory a home. She comes with her crate, leash and current prescription and health records.

Story
Meet Star! Star is a 10 year old Pyrenees/Hound mix. Star is a super sweet girl. She is house trained and does well with older kids. She needs an active family that keep her busy and exercised. Star needs a home with NO cats, and this pretty little lady prefers the company of male dogs only. If you would like to make this sweet girl a part of your family, fill out an application at www.barktownrescue.org. STAR'S ADOPTION FEE IS $100The shelter software system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of our dogs we are only guessing at the dog's predominant breed or breed mix. We strongly encourage you to select your new pet by looking at each dog's individual personality and pet qualities rather than relying on a breed label that is only our best guess.    Our adoption fees vary from $150 and up.  All of our dogs are up to date on vaccines, heart worm preventives, and flea/tick medication, and will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Portions of your adoption fee also help care for the sick and injured animals that we take in.  Thank you for supporting us and considering a rescue dog!    November 4, 2024, 9:21 am

Meet Tyg (Tygrys) ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL: YOU CAN ADOPT TYG FOR JUST $1! PLEASE SHARE THIS POST FAR & WIDE. TYG DESERVES HIS HAPPILY EVER AFTER! Sadly, Tyg has been at the GRRAND kennel for over a year. The kennel volunteers recently had a pool party to celebrate Tyg's one-year anniversary at the kennel - he got to swim, eat doggie cake, and of course, get dressed up! Tyg is a 5-year-old Anatolian Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix who came to GRRAND in 2019 as a 3-month-old puppy. He was adopted by a couple who sadly had to return him in June 2023 due to unforeseen circumstances. He was so sad and would sit by the fence looking for his people to return. He is now settled at the kennel and is certainly a volunteer favorite! Once he decides you are okay, you will be his best bud - but it takes him a while to warm up to new people. He will try and squeeze his 100+ lb body on a chair with you for hugs and kisses. The volunteers love to dress him up and he never complains; the perfect model! He loves the pool and gets to go for a swim every day in the summer. He is very well trained on the leash and loves to go for walks, but he does have a tendency to lunge at large trucks and vans so he needs a strong hand to keep him under control. Tyg is a special boy. He is extremely sweet, loyal and protective of his people. We believe it's best for Tyg to go to a home with an experienced dog owner, no other pets and no children, ideally with a large fenced yard he can patrol, and few outside visitors. Please open your heart and home for this wonderful boy. He will repay you with an abundance of love and loyalty. #anatolianshepherd #anatolianshepherdmix #belgianmalinois #belgianmalinoislovers #belgianmalinoisofinstagram GRRAND trainers have promised Tygrys that they will educate the right family on how to handle a breed like his. Story
Liza & Layla are a bonded pair of Bernedoodle pups, about 4 months old who were likely dumped by a breeder in a rural area and survived for about a month by being fed by farmers in the area until GRRAND was notified and asked to help them! It was very hard capturing them as they are so fearful, but after one getting away, and then found again, we have them both and are trying to help them understand they do not have to fend for themselves and what love is all about! THEY MUST HAVE A SECURE ABOVE GROUND FENCED IN YARD as they are fearful and flight risks, and a home with NO KIDS UNDER the age of 16, as right now, the GRRAND kennel staff say IF you stand very still, and very quiet, they may come up and take a piece of food from you, but they take off again. They are starting to come around and trust people and need a home with folks who have lots of patience and are willing to work with them over time to teach them about life as indoor loved family members. We would be willing to consider separating the littermates, but do not want to leave one behind in the kennel if her sister was to leave, so we are looking for a home that would take both of them and either adopt them as a pair or adopt one and foster the other until another home could be found for her.  If separated, the pups will definitely need homes with another confident young dog that can help them gain their own confidence and show them the ropes. They BOTH LOVE playing with other dogs! With time and patience, they will come around, but need the correct family to help them work through their fears.
