Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Fill out an Adoption Application Since coming to MTM, Rajah has been adopted twice, and returned within a month each time. Why? She’s a big, strong, and playful girl, who came into rescue because her owner died, and her owner’s next of kin kept her outside for 2 years before surrendering her to rescue in January 2021. In those 2 years, she had minimal training and human interaction, and she became infected with heartworm. MTM provided heartworm treatment and she is now negative. Rajah’s previous adopters expected too much, too soon. The first adopters allowed their cat in immediate proximity within the first hour, and Rajah chased. Days later, it wasn’t any better. The second adopter had no other pets, and no children at home. Rajah was adjusting well to the routine and the long walks and all the attention. But, when an adult child and dog visited, Rajah got protective, so she was returned. Her perfect home would have a confident and patient owner, no children, no other animals, and a yard that is fenced in with a physical fence.  Rajah could potentially have a K9 brother or sister as long as his/her demeanor was calm and not overly exuberant or aggressive and they were introduced properly, with decompression techniques used. Rajah needs time and consistency to learn her people are trustworthy. She doesn’t have good social skills with dogs. She chases cats and other small animals. She has been with the same fosterer since April 2021. Her fosterer has other dogs, and goats. Rajah is kept separated from the other animals, and her fosterer feels Rajah doesn’t get enough time with her. Her fosterer describes Rajah as a loving, bouncy Great Dane, a "picture-perfect dog that is just beyond beautiful. Her soul and spirit are truly a rare blessing." She deserves a home where she can enjoy her own space and her own people. Rajah knows basic obedience, just needs to be reminded. She pulls at times but also knows how to walk at a heel position. She loves her zoomies but then will get excited and will jump up to face greet. Putting her in a sit and giving a calm chest rub will calm her back down. Rajah is located in Knoxville, MD. She rides great in the car. She has no issues with people approaching, but she will bark at other dogs. Going to the vet hasn’t been an issue. Grooming; she is fine with nails trims, brushing, etc. She is fine by herself, so she can be left alone while someone works. Likes: Rajah loves having her face petted and leaning in for a Dane hug. She is so attentive and eager to please. She does well in a crate, but she will sing to you if she needs a potty break, a hug or attention. Dislikes: Strangers, dogs barking at her, unpredictable people or activity Personality: Rajah is playful and loving. Her facial expression is so soft. She just wants to get and give love. Energy level: Rajah is able to be calm in a crate, but when loose she is high energy. She loves her zoomies so would do best in a fenced yard. She runs the fence barking at the goats, and the other dogs. Favorite activities: Zoomies and hugs. Good with: Calm, confident and predictable adult humans, and positive training. She likes to please. Not good with: Energetic or loud dogs or cats. She is insecure, so is not trustworthy with children. Housetrained: Yes. Crate trained: Yes. Challenges: Rajah will need to have her obedience training refreshed. She is calmest in a home with a confident owner or she will take control. She does not have good dog-to-dog social skills and she chases cats, so would do best in a home with no other pets. She has done well with calm K9's, so that is a possibility and can be explored in discussion with her current foster. Any Medical issues? Rajah is now heartworm negative! Rajah would thrive in an experienced Great Dane home that understands the importance of ongoing training to build Rajah's confidence. Being an only dog would give her the attention and the time she wants and needs to become a happy-go-lucky Dane. A fenced yard would give her the thrill of the zoomies that she so loves. Rajah may be seven years old, but she isn’t ready to slow down. A typical Dane, she will enjoy going for a walk just as much as a nap. Meeting this girl will bring a joy to your life that only a Great Dane can bring.   Application Fees, Adoption Donations and Rescue Policy: Please know that 100% of our fees and donations pay for the costs of rescuing dogs. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Fill out an Adoption Application I’m Zeus, chief god of the Greeks. Oh no. That was a different Zeus. I’m Zeus. The 4 year old Great Dane saved from a North Carolina shelter.  But I’m awesome just the same. I am so friendly and sweet that the pilot that brought me to Maryland wanted to adopt me.  He actually asked his wife and she said no.  (He should rehome her.) I am crate trained and potty trained. I am good in the house as long as there isn’t something super tempting around like a bag of treats  or steak sitting on the counter. I take treats extremely gently. I know sit and down. I am a happy boy. I have moderate energy. I love to shake my stuffy toys. I love playing fetch with the ball and I even bring the ball back. I also love a bully stick or filled Kong to chew on.  My foster mom says I’m a good boy and I don’t resource guard. My foster mom always feeds us all separately though because she says it’s best to not create a problem. I am living with 2 Great Danes. I love to play with both the male and the female. My foster mom says my foster brother is a butt because he doesn’t always get along well with other dogs but even do great with him. There is a little ankle biter dog who lives next door that barks at me and I pretty much ignore him. There are chickens here too and my foster mom says she doesn’t believe I have good intentions.  I sleep in my crate at night and go in with a couple of treats. I am quiet as a church mouse all night. I am left in a room during the day if foster mom can’t watch me and I’m not destructive. My foster mom says I am excited to go on a leash and I pull but should get better with practice. I now use a gentle leader and I am perfect with that.   I love car rides (and plane rides if you happen to want to take me on a plane). I literally just lay down in the car and occasionally sit up to look out the window.   I’m happy and confident and love all people big or small. I even met a cat at tractor supply and sniffed but did not fixate and my foster mom thinks I would be fine with a dog savvy cat. I also met a little dog that growled at me when I sniffed his butt and I just waked away. My foster mom believes I would do fine with a little dog. I have also gone to Home Depot and I was an extremely good boy there also. I love meeting new people. I don’t seem bothered by loud noises like the leaf blower or thunder or the vacuum cleaner. I love to be petted all over. I was ok for my bath. I liked the rub down but not the water but my foster mom thinks I just am not used to it. I am very treat motivated and take treats very gently. I am friendly with kids so a dog savvy kid should be great. I would love a playful canine sibling but I would be fine as an only pet as long as I get a little exercise like playing ball once or twice a day. These include but are not limited to pull fees from shelters, veterinary examinations, vaccinations, medications and care, microchips, neuter/spay surgeries, heartworm treatments, behavior evaluations, and foster care, as needed. Important notes before applying. Adopters must have their primary residence in one of the following states: Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and parts of North Carolina. We will not adopt giant breed dogs to renters. Homes with children under 6 years of age will not be approved for adoption. Homes with children should have a fenced yard. Pets currently in the applicant's home must have a history of appropriate veterinary care. Homes with intact dogs will not be approved for adoption.  Proof of any of the following exceptions is required: The intact dog is a working member of a law enforcement, or search and rescue/recovery team. The intact dog is registered under the auspices of the American Kennel Club and is actively being shown. A veterinarian has determined the sterilization procedure would harm the intact dog.  We believe in Force Free Training Methods and do not approve of methods or devices using pain or force to control the dog, or to deter undesirable behavior.  Homes with highly varnished steps must have carpeting, securely fixed stair treads, or a non-skid surface. **We encourage you to remediate potential safety issues while your application is under review, prior to the home visit. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Fill out an Adoption Application HEADLINER: Rudy is a bouncy, exuberant boy with a loving soul with lots of affection to give! An experienced adopter and a family with teens and up would be a great match for Rudy given his size and goofball play style. Rudy is loyal, eager to please and affectionate -would love to be your only pet so he can have all your attention to himself! HISTORY: Rudy grew up with a young family and was surrendered due to small children/new babies arriving and the family not having time for this sensitive companion. His current home was intended to be a “foster fail” one while continuing to fosters dogs but despite best efforts to socialize with other dogs, Rudy does not like sharing his mom with new foster dogs. PERSONALITY: Rudy is a handsome, affectionate Great Dane who is energetic & playful yet wants to be your lap dog at the same time -- a true velcro dog! When excited, this 155# puppy bounces around with joy. Rudy will need time to warm up to unfamiliar faces, but once he does he is eager to call you a new friend. Relative to the family’s four legged family members, Rudy bonded with foster brother schnoodle from the beginning. Due to his reticence sharing his humans’ attention, will thrive in a home where he’s the only pet. Rudy is motivated to be with his family, responds to affection and treats. His bouncy personality is sure to endear himself into your heart. FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Loves to go for daily walks, chasing his ball on a rope, running zoomies in his fenced backyard and adores snuggling on the sofa with his head on your lap. He wants to play with his foster brother but a 15yo 10# schnoodle is no playmate, so Rudy will play catch with himself using his stuffed toys. Rudy loves his stuffed ‘woobies,’ snuggling against his ‘person’ and has a slow motion lean-in nose touches down to an art form. MEDICAL ISSUES: Rudy (4yo) was neutered and had gastropexy (stomach tacked) when he arrived at his current home. This dignified Great Dane has a sensitive stomach (managed well with probiotics) and sensitive skin (dandruff is managed well with daily fish oil and monthly baths). WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST KIND OF HOME: Rudy loves to turn heads on his daily walk so if you’re looking for someone to take walks with, Rudy’s your boy. If walks aren’t possible, a home with a fenced backyard to stretch his long legs would be a dream come true for this playful giant. Rudy is truly a velcro giant and enjoys calm, cozy nights at home snuggling- as close to your lap as possible :). ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Handsome Rudy has leash manners, enjoys his crate for meals (and naps), has excellent recall and knows commands sit (working on stay), no, off and lay down. He likes to learn new tricks when he’s rewarded with a tasty treat. He’d love to work on his socialization to become the best pet he can be! Rudy is a loyal & lovable gentle giant- if you think you have the perfect family home for Rudy, please contact us -- we’d love to find out more about you!! Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Fill out an Adoption Application HEADLINER: Moose needs a Valentine to help him celebrate his birthday. HISTORY: Moose was born on Valentine’s Day in 2023. Moose came to MTM from a home in Kentucky. PERSONALITY: Moose is loving, playful and loyal. Moose may look full grown but he is very playful. Moose loves crinkle toys and tug of war ropes. Moose does get the zoomies usually at night before bedtime. He loves to play but just as much as he loves to play Moose loves to rest, snuggle and be pet. His favorite spots to be pet are on his head and behind his ears. Moose is also very loyal. He will let it be known when something is amiss. FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Playing with crinkle toys, tug of war ropes, being pet and snuggling, going for walks. MEDICAL ISSUES: Moose came to MTM rather thin and needing to put on some weight (117.4 at intake) he has been gaining weight. Moose also has some calluses which he has oil being put on them to soften up the spots. WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST KIND OF HOME: The best home for Moose would be one where the adopter understands the needs of a Great Dane or large breed dog. One who is patient and willing to help train Moose to be the best dog he can be. Moose is leash trained (must be walked using a harness as he will very easily slip his collar), housebroken and crate trained but is still working on manners. He does jump when he gets excited and when he gets bored will chew on whatever he can find. Moose has been doing well with redirection when receiving correction. Moose loves to be near his person or people and will follow around. Moose prefers to be wherever the people are. He is an absolute love and would love a home where he can have lots of attention. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Fill out an Adoption Application HEADLINER: Paula is a snuggle bug of a great dane that needs a home where she can lay on the couch and watch movies and go on long walks/play with her people. She is being fostered in York PA. HISTORY: Unknown PERSONALITY: Paula is loving once she is comfortable round you but it takes some time and trust building to get there. She matches your energy, if you are having a lazy day, Paula too, is having a lazy day. If you are energetic and going for a run, Paula too, wants to go for a run. She really just loves being around people and doing whatever you are doing. She is a lazy dog at heart and loves napping on couches, beds, etc. She is very skittish and easily spooked by noises and sounds, she often scares herself with her tail when she hits things like trash cans, railings, etc.. FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Running at the fairgrounds with other dogs who will chase me and snuggling on the couch or bed with my people. MEDICAL ISSUES: Spayed, de-wormed and treated, caught up on all vaccinations. WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST KIND OF HOME: Paula needs a very patient owner who will love her and take the time to build trust. She is not warm and fuzzy to new people but after a few days will she will get there, unfortunately, it may be due to her background. Another dog would be great for her because she loves to play but she could also thrive in a home where she is the only dog. She may need a quieter home because loud noises and sounds spook her very easy and she is already extremely skittish (even after she gets comfortable). She needs a home where if there are kids they understand that needs to be met on her terms and slowly. She most likely will growl because she is uncomfortable not because she has intention to harm. She is hesitant towards everyone and will pick one person to be her person and will slowly warm up to everyone else. She would most likely be ideal for young or middle aged owner who can handle her on a leash in case she sees a squirrel because she will pull. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Paula has good recall but when she sees something of interest (like a squirrel) it is hard to refocus her if she is off leash she will run and chase it. She also took some time to go up and down the stairs. It may take weeks of coaxing and lots of treats but with time she will get there, but beware once she finds the bedrooms your bed is now her bed.
