Story
Meet Marmaduke – a gentle giant looking for a second chance!
Marmaduke’s story isn’t an easy one. This five-year-old Great Dane X Husky mix was found abandoned in a house without food or water for a couple of days, left to fend for himself with no one to care for him.
At 80 lbs, Marmaduke is absolutely breathtaking. His mesmerizing heterochromatic eyes – one piercing blue, one warm brown – will stop you in your tracks. But it’s his calm, soulful nature that will steal your heart. He carries himself with quiet confidence. He’s independent but will curl up beside you on the couch for a bit before stretching out on his own, perfectly content in his space.
Given his past, he’s still learning to feel comfortable being left alone. In the shelter, his anxiety was apparent, especially in a crate. But in his foster home, he’s been doing much better – left alone for short periods with no signs of destruction. He just needs a patient adopter who understands that after being abandoned once, it takes time to trust that someone will always come back for him.
Outside Marmaduke comes alive. He loves to run, stretch his long legs, and chase after a ball – fetch might be his favourite thing in the world. A home with a yard where he can burn off some energy before settling in for a nap would be a dream come true. While he is a quiet dog, he gets excited when he sees other dogs and people on walks. His leash manners are a work in progress, but with his love for food – he’s eager to learn with a treat.
Marmaduke has been nothing but a gentleman with the cat in his foster home. He gets along with dogs, but doesn’t always realize how big he is. He also isn’t shy about setting boundaries, so proper introductions are important. He hasn’t been around kids while in foster care, but at the shelter, he was friendly with everyone, happily approaching adults and children. Given his size, he’d likely do best with dog-savvy kids who understand how to interact with a big dog.
The perfect home for Marmaduke would be in quieter neighbourhood with a yard and a family that works from home. If you’re ready to welcome a gentle, loyal companion into your life, Marmaduke is ready to meet you.
