Story
At 27 lbs, this 4 month-old purebred Golden Retriever named Apollo is the largest of the 6 pups who came to our rescue from a retiring breeder. He is a happy fellow and gets along well with dogs and cats alike. Apollo would love a family to call his own - he's ready for adventure and has a way of charming everyone he meets. He gives the "golden paw" in greeting and eagerly uses his paw to give a hug too. Apollo will be micro-chipped and given puppy vaccinations. He is heartworm negative and received a Proheart 6 injection so he will not need any additional heartworm preventative for 6 months. He will be headed north from AL in mid-October to be directly adopted. Adopters must commit to the spaying or neutering of their adopted pup when it reaches 1 year of age, or as your veterinarian recommends, and must provide proof of neutering/spaying to SGRR. Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to become an important, forever part of their life journey by continuing the rehabilitation we have begun. If you are approved to adopt through SGRR, are home most of the day, and have an active life-style, and a sense of humor, please contact Cheryl Kewley to be considered to adopt Apollo. If not yet approved for adoption, please visit our website to lean more and to submit an online application. Click here to visit our website. Please contact us with any questions regarding your application status. PLEASE APPLY by submitting an application via this online link: Click for Adoption Application About Our Rescue Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready. The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home. Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed. Story
Note - Due to overwhelming interest, we are not accepting any additional applications, for Shadow, at this time. Thank you! It is difficult for us not to smile when we look at Shadow with his soft, expressive eyes and million-dollar smile! This amiable southern gentleman was found by a good Samaritan wandering around in Northern Louisiana, underweight and all alone. With his wonderful manners, it is clear that Shadow was once someone's beloved companion. Fear not, sweet boy, for you will be forever loved by one of SGRR's amazing adopters! We believe Shaddy may be a Golden Retriever/Rough-Coated Collie mix. Whatever it is that went into his DNA, it produced one wonderful dog! Estimated to be about 9-10 years old, this majestic fellow weighs about 50 lbs and could use a few more groceries in his belly. He has a moderate energy level and enjoys playing as much as sitting under a tree in the shade. But mostly, Shadow LOVES being with people and getting pets and love! Shadow is a dream on the leash and loves to take walks. Can you just picture being out and about, taking in the beautiful sites and smells of the cool weather in the northeast? And after that walk, picture him curled up in front of the fire in LL Bean fashion, right next to you. Shadow's heart is calling for you to love him and his eyes are reaching out for that special someone in the world who is meant just for him. If you are that “someone” to whom Shadow is speaking, be sure to apply today! Shadow is neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, and micro-chipped. He is under treatment for heartworm and has been given a Proheart-6 injection for 6 months of heartworm prevention. Shadow is good with other dogs, but has no known history with kitties. He will be ready to come north to be directly adopted in mid-to-late December. Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to become an important, forever part of their life journey by continuing the rehabilitation we have begun. Story
I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other dogs in need. Thank you! Beautiful Ginger found herself in an overcrowded shelter in Mississippi and was adopted by a local rescuer who planned to keep Ginger for herself. Sadly, just two weeks after bringing Ginger home, the rescuer found out she had terminal cancer and asked if SGRR would find this beautiful girl her forever home. We were happy to help and it was just in time as this gentle woman passed away quite suddenly. At about 9-10 years of age, Ginger is a dream girl and her foster family has only wonderful things to say about her. She has perfect house manners, walks well on the leash, and rides nicely in the car. Ginger loves watching sports on TV with her foster family and her favorite thing to eat is scrambled eggs. One of our volunteers shared, "Ginger does this adorable thing where she kinda murmurs when being loved on and she leans in for more pets and praise. It’s like a purring cat in a larger Golden Retriever female! :) Such a loving and sweet lady." Ginger is spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations, and microchipped. She is under treatment for heartworms and has been given a Proheart-6 injection for 6 months of heartworm prevention. Ginger weighs about 60-65 lbs, and is good with other dogs, but has no known history with kitties. She will be ready to come north to be directly adopted in mid-to-late December. Story
I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other dogs in need. Thank you! One of our southern volunteers was made aware of a lovely 12-18 month-old golden and white colored pup who was in a shelter in Elmore County, AL. Picked up as a stray, the shelter staff was amazed that no one came to claim Nugget because he is an amazingly sweet boy. His favorite human shares, "Nugget is a spirited, affectionate, friendly, and eager-to-please young pup! He loves to play and retrieve toys. Nugget is quick to sit when he wants a treat or knows one is coming his way - surely a sign that someone has trained him in his past life. He's a fun pup and just needs an adopter to continue to work with him and the rewards will be endless!" Nugget gets along well with submissive dogs and would do nicely with a calm canine companion to learn from. Nugget was tested with cats at the shelter and when the cat swiped at him, Nugget backed away. He rides nicely in the car and gets a B in leash-walking. Nugget covers his humans in kisses and affection. He has a big heart in a beautiful, fluffy package. Nugget, weighing in around 55-60 lbs, has been brought up-to-date on vaccinations, is neutered, heartworm negative, and microchipped. Nugget has been given a Proheart injection which provides 6 months of heartworm prevention. If you are home most of the day and are approved to adopt through SGRR, do not wait to contact us about Nugget. He will be arriving in the northeast on 11/16/24 to be directly adopted. Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to take on whatever comes with the dog. Story
Rylo came in with another dog as an owner surrender. Unfortunately they could no longer care for them so he is currently at the shelter. Rylo is a little bit over a year old and is a retriever mix. He walks well on leash, and already knows the `sit` cue. Rylo may take some time to warm up to people, but so far he is doing quite well with making new friends slowly! Rylo is a playful pup and would do best in an active home, where his new family can take him on some outdoor adventures!
