Story
applications at leiashope.org Location Decatur, IL Candy Land is a 1-year-old Golden Retriever and a puppy mill survivor who is just beginning to learn what it means to be a loved family dog. Before rescue, Candy had never lived in a home. She didn’t know the comfort of a dog bed, the fun of toys, the joy of treats, or the safety of human affection. She also missed out on early socialization, and because of that she is a shy, insecure girl who is carefully learning how to navigate this big new world. Everything is new, and she is taking it all in at her own pace. Candy learns best by watching other dogs and truly blossoms when she has a confident canine role model. She will need a canine coach in her adoptive home — a calm, confident dog who can take her under their wing and show her that life is safe, routines are predictable, and good things happen every day. Because of her background, Candy is a flight risk. She does not know how to walk on a leash and will try to flee if given the opportunity. A secure physical fenced yard is required. Candy should always wear her martingale collar when leaving the home for things like vet or grooming visits. A martingale collar is slip-resistant and safer for dogs like Candy than a harness, and she will go home with one. Candy is looking for a patient, understanding family who can take things slow and steady. Puppy mill survivors do not follow a set timeline. There will be progress, pauses, and moments that require grace. Adopting a mill survivor is a long-distance marathon, not a sprint — but the reward is immeasurable. Watching a dog like Candy learn to relax, feel joy, and finally live as a carefree, normal dog is one of the most beautiful experiences rescue has to offer. In time, she will become a deeply loyal, grateful companion. Candy’s adoption fee is $400. She is spayed, current on vaccines, and on monthly heartworm prevention. Leia’s Hope is a volunteer-run, foster-based rescue. All of our dogs live in foster homes. Applications typically take 7–10 business days to process. Meet and greets are scheduled only after an application is approved. We do not transport dogs; adopters must travel to the dog’s location in Decatur, IL for meet and greet and adoption. Candy is a 10+ year commitment, and her adopter must be prepared to love and support her for her lifetime. To apply, visit leiashope.org.

Story
Meet Lucille, a 46 pound 2 year old Doodle who came to us with her sister, Ethel. Lucille's foster dad says she affectionate, but reserved in expressing that affection. She loves to play with toys and is especially excited when she has a sock to toss around. Lucille enjoys going for walks and just being outside. She gets along well with both small and large dogs and is playful with her sister and the foster's dogs. Lucille is crate trained, is working on her housetraining. Both girls are looking for a quiet home with a patient family that can give them time to adjust and learn to trust them. A family without small children is best, as Lucille and Ethel can be startled by noises and fearful in new situations. Ethel and Lucille are timid with new people, but they have already come to trust their foster family.  They would both benefit from having another dog in the home to give them confidence.  A fenced yard is required. Lucille's minimum adoption fee is $250 plus a $15 rabies registration fee for McLean County residents. She has been spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, heartworm checked, dewormed, and is on flea and heartworm preventatives. Paper versions are available upon request. If you are interested in this pet, please fill out the brief Adopter Survey by hitting "Apply for Adoption" on the profile above. After we review your completed survey, we will contact you by phone or email within three business days. Please note- Out of respect for our volunteers and staff, we are closed on Sunday and Monday and will not be processing any applications on those days. Please get back to us right away when we call or email regarding an application so that we can quickly connect using the process below: Select a pet and submit an online adoption survey. A PCH! adoption counselor will contact potential adopters within three business days (PCH! cannot guarantee any pet's availability, but we make every effort to accommodate adopters with a reply and possible alternative suggestions). An adoption counselor and client will then have a conversation to answer questions, discuss any medical needs for the pet and determine the suitability of a match (if necessary, we may opt to put adopters in touch with foster parents). After a match is made, clients will be asked to sign our adoption agreement and pay the adoption fee online through our secure payment system *Please see our modified no-risk return policy. (below) The PCH! adoption counselor will then set up a specific appointment time and location. Adopters should bring a pet carrier and/or a leash to pick up and their ID. Adult pets will be wearing a collar. It is important that clients arrive on time, neither early nor late. Cats and kittens are required to leave in a pet carrier. If your adoption is scheduled at Pet Central Helps!: Upon arrival inside the Crossroads Center complex (360 Wylie Drive), look for the black Pet Central Helps! semi-trailer, which is right outside of our facility (Suite 720). Park in the parking lot and enter the facility. A PCH! representative will greet you and show you to the adoption room. Your new pet will be handed to you. We will take a "Happy Adoption Day” photo with your pet and family. If your adoption is scheduled at PetSmart – Bloomington, IL: Park in the PetSmart (1606 E. Empire St.) Parking lot and enter the store. We will be set up just inside the store entrance. Let us know you are here to pick up your pet! A PCH! representative will confirm your information and hand you your pet. We will take a "Happy Adoption Day” photo with your pet and family. If your adoption is scheduled at the Cat’s Meow Cafe: Navigate to PetSmart, park in the parking lot and enter the store. Locate a PCH! Representative at our adoption table and let them know you are picking up a Cat Cafe Cat. You will sign your final contract with your counselor and snap a picture of the completed screen. Head to the Cat’s Meow Cafe at 507 N. Hershey Rd and provide them with the snapshot of your final contract. They will get your cat and take a “Happy Adoption Day” photo with your pet and family. PCH! supports a 30-day no-fault return policy in which adopters are given the opportunity to find a better match. If we cannot provide advice/tools to keep a pet in the home we offer these options: Exchange for a pet that may be a better match** Receive a refund minus a $40 processing fee** With this approach, we can often turn mismatches into opportunities! Story
Zephyr is a 9-month-old Golden Retriever mix weighing 40 pounds, and he’s a happy, energetic young guy with so much love to give. He’s friendly, outgoing, and playful, and always ready for fun or affection. Zephyr is making great progress with housetraining and is eager to keep learning. He loves spending time outside running around the yard, so a fenced yard would be ideal, though not required. He’ll thrive in a home that can keep both his body and mind exercised through walks, playtime, and enrichment. This sweet boy enjoys going for walks, playing with toys, chewing on a good bone, and cuddling up with his people when it’s time to relax. While we were told he’s good with kids, he hasn’t been around them during our care. Zephyr would make a wonderful companion for an active home ready to help him grow into the amazing dog he’s meant to be. His minimum adoption fee is $300 plus a $15 fee, if 4 months or older, for rabies registration for McLean County residents. He has been neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, heartworm checked, dewormed, and is on flea and heartworm preventatives.
