Story
Meet Belle! This sweet girl deserves so much better than she had; our goal is to make that happen. Belle was rescued back in August and was the victim of cruel, ignorant owners who chained her to the bumper of a car, unspayed, and unprotected from the elements or predators. They didn’t provide her with consistent meals or fresh water, and she had no vet care. When we took her in, she was severely underweight and had multiple litters over the years, living outside with little room to move and no chance to escape. One of her puppies was chained next to her . A local animal advocate became aware of her dire situation and was able to arrange the release of Belle and her puppy. The most frustrating part of this story is that before we secured Belle’s freedom, her owner decided to unchain her and let her run free. She was hit by a car while foraging for food and came into the rescue with a fractured hip, a broken tail, and was heartworm positive. Belle now lives with a mom, dad, and two other dogs and has spent the past 3.5 months recovering and learning the rules of home life. She has made so much progress and is naturally a happy pup. She has a medium energy level and loves to go on walks, spinning in circles when she sees her leash, but she also likes to chill on the couch. Belle is a nice mix of independent and connected to her human…very Husky-like. She follows her foster mom around and is very smart and attentive. She wants to be with you but is fine being in the same room without being in your lap. Belle would do well as an only dog or with a dog of similar size/energy. She worked through some early guarding issues, which is understandable for a dog who was starved and never had resources. She will need a gradual introduction to her new pack and some time to get comfortable, but she does well once established. Toys and bones are lying around her foster home, and she doesn’t guard them, and she takes treats politely in a group without issue. Each night, the pups get a small whipped cream dollop, and Belle always finishes hers first but never tries to get the others' treats. Her foster mom feeds her meals separately, which is always a wise decision with any new dog. Belle has also proven to have good house manners. She is housetrained and is not destructive when left home alone. Her foster mom tried the crate early on, and she wasn’t a fan, so she keeps Belle in a separate room when she leaves home. At night, Belle sleeps in bed with the other two dogs and her foster family. As Belle has settled in and healed, she’s become playful, gets zoomies now, and is not limited by her past injuries. She's warmed up to head scratches and belly rubs and has learned what being a family dog is like.
