The Great:
He is super loving and snuggly, very "Velcro".
He loads up on the grooming table like a pro.
He is not picky about his food, he's a good eater.
He is housebroken *see note under Quirks.
He does not chew inappropriately. Does not dig.
LOVES to play fetch and tug.
He is neutered.
He matches energy. He relaxes when everybody is relaxing and he's ready to go whenever you are.
He will tap the doorknob with his nose when he is ready to go out.
Knows basic commands. Will wait until released to eat.
The Good:
*Walks well. Will pull at the beginning of a walk, but settles into a loose leash after.
*Generally tolerates grooming well, but his feet can be a little difficult. He will pull them away. It takes patience to groom his feet.
*He does not compete with the other dogs when getting treats. He waits his turn quietly.
*He gets along with other dogs. He took to my female immediately and needed slow introduction to my males. My males are mostly submissive. Obviously, this will vary and will require proper introductions.
*He loves routines. If you change his routine, he will struggle a little to adjust, but will eventually accept.
The Quirks:
*He is very vocal. And I mean VERY. He is unhappy away from his people and will bark if you pen him up while everybody is awake and about. Could use a trainer to help correct this. He grumbles. He is vocal when he plays.
*Likes to chase. He has not harmed my cat, but he loves to chase her. When he catches her, they look at each other weird, she hisses, he whines, and then he walks away.
*When he needs to go out, he needs to go out RIGHT THEN. He gets excited at the door and may piddle if you don't let him out fast enough. This is rare, but can happen if he's been inside a long time.
*He has a lot of anxiety in the car. He is vocal and paces. He will likely need cbd or trazadone and conditioning to help him do better in a car. I restrain him to a seat with a kurgo seatbelt adapter.
*He is territorial of his crate. I suspect this is probably because he spent ALOT of time in a crate before he landed in the shelter. An adopter will need to be mindful and respectful of his boundaries. Recommend that the only access he has to the room his crate is in - is when he is in it. He is fine until he gets inside the crate with the door latched. Then he gets very upset and territorial about it.
Rambo's ideal family and home:
Not alone for 8+ hours a day in a row
No kids under 10
Strong physically and strong-willed
No small dogs or cats; Prefer no male dogs
Committed to training and grooming
Active
Fence preferred
All applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis and I encourage anyone who is interested to fill out an adoption application. I have spent a lot of time and effort showing Rambo better days and getting him healthy. He just wants to love and be loved. He will be your absolute best friend if you give him the chance.
If Rambo is adopted locally (or near enough for a visit), I am also offering his adopting family two free grooming sessions a year for the rest of his life, done by me in my home. I live in Jacksonville, NC. I am not a professionally trained dog groomer, but I have been grooming my own Giants for 10 years and can help out with free grooming twice a year. Obviously, Giants need to be groomed more than that, but it's my way of saying thank you for giving this wonderful boy the home he deserves.
