Story
I had a pleasant surprise in store when I met Mack. He’s a seven month old 53 pound German Shepherd mix that was surrendered to the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 10/1 along with his brother Cheese. The surrender form stated that they were surrendered because the owners were moving AND had too many dogs. It also stated that both brothers had lived entirely outdoors and had not been taught any commands. The outdoors part was obvious from looking at the fly bites on Mack’s ears. So I assumed that Mack would need manners training. I’m assuming he probably has not had much socialization. Yet, he was really well mannered, gentle, and loving. He didn’t jump on me except one time to give me a hug. I also got kisses. He was just so happy for some attention. He looked over the wall and was whining. I’m assuming he was looking for his owners🥲. He also romped around the yard and then came back to hang out with me. He took treats gently and seem to be motivated by them. He’s obviously smart and very trainable. He needed some coaxing walking on the leash. The surrender form said he was raised with other dogs but not cats or children. I’m told he had to fight for his food so he has some scars on his head and his legs. If you have another dog, they will need to be fed separately. He really has so so much potential. He wants to be an inside dog this time around where we can chill out watching TV with his new family.

Story
Cheese is a 38 pound 7 month honey-colored German Shepherd mix that was surrendered to the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 10/1. The surrender form stated that they had too many animals AND that they were moving ! The form stated that Cheese had been raised around other dogs but not children or cats. It’s obvious that Cheese has spent most of time outside because he has fly bites on his ears. When I first took him out into the yard he was shaking and his tail was tucked. With ”sweet talk” he relaxed, and I even got a mini tail wag. He wants to make friends, but will need slow introductions to build trust. He will do best with a laid-back family. He does like treats and takes them gently. He is agile as he likes to climb. He’s also sweet, docile, calm, and alert. He’s also somewhat skittish. He had to be carried into the yard as he fought the leash. This poor scared pup didn’t understand what a leash was all about. He has some scarring on his front legs. He wants to be an inside dog this time around so he can spend more time loving on his new family. If you have another dog Cheese will need to be fed separately.

Story
I named this one year-old 65 pound mostly white Shepherd Edison. You will notice that his ribs are showing, his hair was dirty, and he had a dirty old rope around his neck. I think he was inventive and creative in finding a way to escape his previous life. Now he’s hoping for the love he’s deserved all along. He is so sweet and yet so so nervous. He was drooling because his stomach was upset. He wandered aimlessly around for a while, and then spent the rest of the time close to me. He wants and seeks affection in the gentle way of his. He hasn’t been taught the sit command, but he does back up in an effort to please. He’s very sweet, well mannered, and friendly. He would be a loyal, devoted companion. He did his business when he got out into the yard. He had a strong pull on the leash trying to go out to the yard but walked right beside me on the way back. Please, please consider tagging or meeting this boy. He needs out of the shelter probably more than most because he’s so nervous. He would love to watch TV with you curled up beside you or in his bed at your feet.

Story
They just don’t come any cuter than this adorable pup I have named Walker. He was found and brought to the shelter on 10/21 with another puppy, Gordy, who may well be a sibling. He is a mixed breed, and my dog scanner app suggests the following in his breed mix: Black and Tan Coonhound, German Shepherd, Australian Kelpie. Walker weighs 19 pounds and is approximately 3 months old. The two dogs are kenneled together and they get along fine. This is one high-spirited, spunky, life-of-the-party youngster. Though he showed no interest in toys or balls, he is a very playful and sociable fellow. He is amiable and wants to engage in playful activity with a human friend. His main focus was on the treats I was offering him, so much so that he would probably be easy to train being so treat motivated. Walker might be just the pup for someone looking for a young dog to train and raise to be a beloved family pet. He will need plenty of daily exercise, playtime, enrichment, and obedience training. It goes without saying that Walker deserves and needs an inside home with his people. Walker would be best suited for an active person or family who would work with him through all the challenges of the puppy stage.

Story
Meet Loretta, primarily a German Shepherd but with a bit of Belgian Shepherd Dog thrown in for good measure, brought to the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 11/9 as a stray. Loretta weighs 46 pounds and is about a year old. She looks rather solemn in her photos. However, she is anything but that! She has so much personality and is full of fun-loving energy! In her excitement this spunky gal will jump on you. Loretta is playful and active. She loves treats and takes them gently but does not know to sit for them. Since she is so crazy about treats, it may be fairly easy to teach her some commands. Loretta is very curious and spent a fair amount of time at the shelter wall, leaning on the ledge and looking out at the parking lot and yard at all the interesting people, dogs and vehicles. There is nothing timid about Loretta. She looks as though she has been well cared for and yet no one has come looking for her! This amiable girl has such a pleasant nature and truly is a delightful youngster! She walks quite well on a leash and she did her business when she got out into the yard. Her dream is to live inside with her people and be an important part of their lives. Therefore if you are looking for a guard or watch dog, you need not apply! Are you able to assist Loretta in finding her new home?
