Story
PLEASE NOTE! Unless stated otherwise, our dogs and puppies are located in Arkansas, and transported to the north/northeast once adopted. We do occasionally have dogs/puppies placed in foster homes in the north/northeast. In the cases where the pet is somewhere other than Arkansas, it will be noted beside the name of the pet.1/6/25 Athena is currently enrolled at Paws in Prison learning all the things! She works daily with inmates on the basics and even a few tricks! Each week the inmates meet with a certified dog trainer. After 8 weeks she will graduate with her Canine Good Citizen Certificate. She started in December and will graduate in February. Here's what Paws in Prison has to say about her- 'When Athena is finally getting the spoiling she deserves, she won’t say a word about it. But there will be signs. She is a very happy dog these days. Athena is a mix of German shepherd and Husky, and she has one blue eye and two pointy ears to prove it. She’s about 1 year old and weighs about 50-60 pounds. Athena is a full-fledged beauty. Very nice girl with an upbeat disposition. She engages easily and wants to be included. She’s also very smart and pays attention to everything. Love her and she’ll love you back ten times more.'  Her backstory- Athena is a survivor. She was an owned dog, and her mom really loved her. However, the home was not a happy one for mom, because she was suffering through domestic violence. Things escalates, and Athena's mom had to take her kids and get out quickly. Unfortunately, the place she was going to did not allow pets, so she had to leave Athena behind. The abuser then chained Athena to a tree. There she sat, for about 6 weeks or so, with no shelter. Sometimes, he threw a little food out to her, but most days, he didn't. She was hungry thirsty, cold, and most of all...lonely. But she's safe now and lonely no more.  Athena is a very good girl. She minds very well and is eager to learn. She is very receptive to affection and training as well. Athena was already spayed when we got her in rescue, but sadly, she did test positive for heartworms. While she is at Paws in Prison, she will start her 30 days of doxycycline pre-treatment, then will be treated for heartworms after she graduates the program. She will be available for adoption after she is treated. Athena is only about a year old and in good health otherwise, so we don't expect any complications, and she should make a full recovery. She is reportedly 1/2 German Shepherd, 1/2 Husky. About 50-60 pounds. She is good with other dogs. Located in Arkansas, but transport is available. Adopter must be able to pick up or arrange for someone to pick up for them at one of the following times/locations. We do occasionally have dogs/puppies placed in foster homes in the north/northeast. In the cases where the pet is somewhere other than Arkansas, it will be noted beside the name of the pet.1/26/25 Behr is now about 11 weeks old (estimated DOB 11/20/24). These pictures are from when he was younger, we will hopefully have new pictures of him soon. He is ready to go to his forever home! His foster mom says he is a very chonky, very playful boy! Mama is a mixed breed, maybe Lab mix? But her babies look very much like Shepherd mixes.  She about 40 pounds. We do not know who/what dad was. Mama, Autumn, and her pups are in a wonderful foster home where they are getting lots of love and attention! Behr is up to date on age appropriate vaccines, microchipped, neutered, and on flea/tick and heartworm prevention. It's quite a story of how Behr and his siblings came into rescue. Our amazing rescue director, Kelley, was out running errands about a month ago. She was traveling a very busy highway when she saw a dog on the side of the road who had clearly had puppies recently. She tried to get the dog to come to her with no luck. She went and bought dog food and went back to the area where she'd seen the Mama dog and left it for her. In the meantime, Kelley had posted about seeing the Mama. Later on, someone reported they'd seen the mama on the side of the road, deceased. Long story short, that turned out not to be true (maybe it was a deer deceased on the side of the road?). Someone alerted us where they thought mama lived. It was cold out that night and Kelley was so worried wondering where the mama and her pups were, if they had shelter etc. So, Kelley did what she always does and headed out late Saturday night with a friend to go find mama and pups. She went to the area she was told she might live. It was not a very safe area, but Kelley went anyway. There were several campers all parked in this area. Kelley knocked on a few doors and nobody knew the dog. So she went searching through the woods, nothing. The food she'd left hadn't been touched. After searching for awhile, she went back to the campers and ended up finding the owner of the mama. There she with 7 pups in a dog house. Thankfully the owner let Kelley take mama and all the pups. One of our wonderful foster families took them in and the rest is history. Located in Arkansas, but transport is available.
