Story
Name: Mika Breed: Husky/GSD mix Weight: 70 pounds Gender: Female Spayed/neutered: Spayed Age: 11 years (DOB-they think spring 2013) Obtained From: Not certain Reason for Intake: Mika's owner has dementia and is unable to care for her. Up to Date with Vetting:Rabies- Feb/26/25, DA2PPV-Mar/12/25 Last vet check Mar 3/25: anything before foster Feb/25 unknown. Good with dogs: She has not lived with another dog. She was good with a family member's GSD/Collie mix. On walks she ignores other dogs and does not engage, she will either try to avoid/move away. Good with cats: Yes. She lived with a cat and was good with the cat. She doesn’t seem to have a strong prey drive as on walks she has come face to face with possums and bunnies, she doesn’t seem to care, just ignores them. Good with kids: A family member has a 3 year old who she has always been good with. Good with strangers: When strangers visit she barks at first and then will settle and come up for a pat, she in no way aggressive she does not jump up. She is a bit timid if anything and takes her a minute to warm up, she meets new people on walks and will be timid at first then wanting pets the biggest thing is to let her come to you. Resource guarding issues: Not from people, I have been able to remove from her mouth a prized chew with no reaction, she does not bark at the door bell or the knock but more so when I actually open the door. Ever bitten a human: No Ever bitten a dog: No Fears: She is timid and needs a bit of time to become comfortable with new people. Housetrained: Yes. She has always lived in an apartment and been taken for walks. Her foster has now started taking her for a large walk in morning which she loves and is an excellent dog to walk on leash. She also goes for another 6 block walk in the afternoon and and a shorter walk in the evening. As her owner declined cognitively and physically Mika has not been getting out as often as she needed and she doesn’t have the muscles built up just yet for longer walks. She can’t wait for this winter to be over so she can la y outside on the lawn and people watch. Crate trained: Yes, she has been crated with her pervious owner, and willingly goes into crate, but with foster she is not crated as there has been no need, she is left alone for 4 hours some days and with no damage or accidents. Good in the car: Excellent in the car lays down in the back seat and falls asleep. Has a little problem getting in and out in the Fosters car as it is a bit high but will jump in with some assistance. Bark when left alone: No. Foster goes out for 4 hours somedays and Mika is left alone during that time, no neighbour complaints as to barking and no barking heard. Destructive: No Energy Level: Low to medium, she loves to walk and see new things, it’s not at break speed but a nice leisurely walk, and she would love going trail walking with more things to see and smell. Leash skills: She walks well on leash and does not show concern with dogs/people/vehicles. Foster walks her on a loose leash most of the time. Okay with physical handling/manipulations: Foster has brushed her, cleaned her teeth, you can touch her feet and ears with no problem. Her nails were very long when she came to rescue and as such we have been doing nail trims every 2-3 weeks to get her nails back to where they should be. Known commands: sit, stay, come, high five Food on now: kibble and wet food. 2-3 cups of kibble daily and 1/2 can of wet food twice a day. She eats right away. Behavioural issues: She is timid and needs a bit of time to warm up to new people. Described as friendly and cuddly once she knows you. She thinks she is a lap dog and likes to follow you around , she likes to be near her p eople. Medical issues: Upon coming into foster she did have an ear infection and was treated for it, as well as arthritis in her back end which was causing her pain, she has been placed on pain medication for that and it has made a huge difference. At her last V et check up her heart was fine, her eyes are a bit cloudy, and it was stated she was in good condition for an older lady. Foster: She is the perfect companion for a retired couple or a single person who is not overly active but still wants to get out for a bit. She will bark to alert you if she thinks there is someone in her house that she doesn’t know. She loves to watch TV laying on the floor at my feet, noise doesn’t seem to both her, as thanks to this winter there have been loud noises outside the house with snow removal. She is a lovely older dog who still needs a chance at the good life and the love of a furever home. March 11, 2025, 3:51 pm
