Story
This is Gabriel (we all call him "Gabe"), and he's a gorgeous 3-year-old long haired German shepherd. We believe that all German Shepherds are beautiful, but there's something more about Gabe. If he were a person, we'd call it "star quality." Gabe doesn't just come into a room, he makes an entrance. His enthusiasm, exuberance, and ability to connect with people -- his charisma -- make him an extra special dog. It's as if he's aways saying "look at me," and most people do. Like most long haired shepherds, Gabe is high energy. When he plays ball, it's as if he's a professional outfielder. When he interacts with the rest of the pack, he's a social butterfly, running and playing like an Alpha, but backing down when he's put in his place. And when interacting with humans, he seems to know what you're thinking even before you do. He stares into your eyes and, it seems, into your soul. He wants that one-on-one bond and loves the closeness and reassurance of being touched and petted. Gabe came to us several weeks ago, after a kind stranger found him on the backroads of North Carolina. She knew that he would need an experienced rescue to take him. Once we met Gabe, we couldn't say no. In that short time, he has settled nicely into the pack without major confrontations. At the same time, it became clear that Gabe became reactive when he's on his leash and sees another dog (or deer!). We don't know what has happed to him in the past, but we assume that he may have been attacked by another dog at some point. Gabe has been working with a trainer on this issue and has been making progress. Now, when he sees a deer, he just puffs up and goes about his business after a firm "leave it." He's even learned to tolerate the outdoor cat! We know he'll continue to improve with additional training. Gabe needs a secure fenced yard and no young children (under 16). He'd be great as an only dog, or with a female companion who can match his energy but put him in check when needed. Most of all, he needs an experienced handler who understands German shepherds and can continue his training with his dog reactivity on leash. If you're looking for a "show stopping" shepherd, and are willing to put in the time, patience, and love, this Marlon Brando of a pup will definitely win your heart. Gabe is neutered, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, on monthly heart worm preventative, crate train, obedience trained and walks well on a leash.
