Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. ENZO ~2 years old. Good with some dogs, but best as an only dog . Not good with kids or cats.  GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only.        Enzo is patiently waiting for the perfect family to find him. He’s a tall stunning boy who LOVES going for a ride in the car, seriously – this guy cannot walk past a car without letting you know he wants to get in. Enzo is currently a lean 85lbs and needs a family committed to keeping him at a healthy weight. Enzo didn’t inherit the best genes, likely due to a backyard breeder whose only interest was making money. Due to this, Enzo will need hip surgery within the next 1-2 years. The rescue will cover the cost of surgery at one of their vets, so his adopter doesn’t have to worry about that, but they will need to care for him during the recovery period. Enzo would do best as an only dog, he loves attention and going for a walk. He is low to medium energy, has no problems with stairs. He is still somewhat mouthy and will not be placed in a home with children younger than teenagers. Enzo is house trained and doesn’t need to be crated. After a walk, his favorite past time is lounging on the couch. He’s friendly but not overly pushy looking for affection. Enzo is a goofy boy that just puts a smile on your face being around him. We understand that his upcoming health needs will deter some adopters, but we are hopeful someone will give this boy a chance, he deserves his own forever family. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.STEVE ~3 years old. TBD if good with dogs, kids and cats. GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only.   This sweet boy is overflowing with so much love and enthusiasm for people. His motto is if life gives you lemons, let's make lemonade and friends! If you ever felt down, he would definitely lift your spirits. He has a great head tilt so you know that he is listening to you. This boy loves hard though, so it’s better that there were no small kids in the house but it’s only because he would bowl them over and smother them with kisses before you could get him off them! He would be ok with older considerate kids. Steve loves going for walks and exploring new things. He is up for any adventures you want to take him on. He does great riding in the car and is well behaved when riding. Steve has visited several big box stores and really enjoyed perusing the aisles and meeting new people. He is very polite meeting and greeting when we are in public. Steve is very excited to meet doggie friends. He is a bit socially awkward and is still learning how to read the cues when the other dogs have had enough. He is definitely improving in this department. We are working on how to "play it cool" when meeting other dogs. He is a work in progress and just needs someone to help show him the way. Just look at his videos! He does well on the leash but will need someone who will continue working with him on training. He is very food motivated so that is always a bonus. Steve was picked up as a stray. He was half starved and weigh about 35 lbs. He had also been hit by a car and the shelter took him to the vet. Steve was at the shelter for a while and they did a wonderful job helping him gain weight and getting use to being handled. Steve would love a family that is ready to be showered with love because he has plenty to give. He would love a fenced yard so he could run and play. He would love a playful companion that could help him learn the ropes. Steve has also discovered squeaky balls and absolutely loves them! He does kill the squeaker in the ball so you may need to set up a ball fund. Steve will carry one ball in his mouth while chasing another and has managed to carry 2 balls at a time. Do you think this happy boy could be the one you are looking for?  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.For more information on our adoptable pet list please visit: Adoptable Pet List Please join us at our next Event(s): Current Scheduled Events:         November 4, 2024, 6:19 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.MAVERICK ~7 years old. Good with older, considerate kids. Wants to be an only pet. A fenced yard is necessary in a subdivision. But, can discuss if the home is in the country.  GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only. NEW BIO!!!! Hi there, let me tell you a bit about myself and my journey! I moved to a new foster home in March, and wow, it's been an adventure! I've met so many different foster dogs (even though I did not like any of them), and even weathered a hurricane, but I'm doing great because my foster parents love me so much. Before I came to this country home, I lived with a fantastic foster mom in a condo with another dog. The other dog and I didn’t quite see eye to eye, which made it hard for my true personality to shine (and caused my foster mom to get grey hairs!). But since moving out here to the country, I’ve really come into my own! Here's what I’m all about: Things I Love: People – I’m a people lover through and through. Kids – I enjoy spending time with kids, especially one-on-one. I can get a little too excited when there's a big group running around. I think I should not live with small kids, but if they visit I am all about that. Lowe’s – It’s one of my favorite places! I love going there and greeting all my fans. I kiss a lot of kids there!  Trucks – Oh boy, do I love trucks! Going for rides (especially to Lowe's) is my idea of a great time. Walks in the woods – I adore nature walks and splashing around in the creek. Zoomies – When I’m happy, the zoomies take over! The humans say it makes me a total goofball, but I can't help it! Things I’m Not a Fan Of: Other dogs – This is where it gets tricky. I’m polite at first, but I just can’t warm up to other dogs. My foster mom thinks I might have been hurt by one, so now I try to keep my distance. I can walk near other dogs, but I prefer them to stay in their own space. My foster sister (a Malinois) and I get along on leash walks because she’s all about her own business, and I respect that! My Ideal Home: I’d thrive in a home where I can be the only dog and have a person or family who enjoys being active—whether it’s yard work, going for rides, or just doing fun things together! I’m particularly fond of my foster Papa, but if he’s not around, I’m just as happy with my foster Mama. I need someone who understands that other dogs and I don’t mix well, so it’s important to keep me safe from interactions with them. A home in a quieter area with plenty of space (and no short fences!) would be ideal for me. Please do not think one day I will be ok with dogs. That will set me up for failure and possibly get me hurt or another dog hurt.  If you’re looking for a loyal, fun-loving companion who’s ready for adventures and all the love you can give, I might just be your perfect match!   Previous Bio: Hi, my name is Mav, short for Maverick. You know...like Tom Cruise in Top Gun. I'm cool like he was and even more handsome. Unfortunately, I lost my home and family to a flood and am looking for a cool pad to be my forever home. I am pretty chill but LOVE for you to throw favorite green ball and I promise, I'll gladly bring them back to you and let you throw it for me again. My foster mom says I have a medium energy, whatever that means! I am potty trained and walk well on a leash, (except I can pull sometimes when I see another pup), and I LOVE to run and sit outside in the yard. My foster mom says that because I’m such a tall Tom, I have to have a 5-6 ft fence if you want to let me loose in the yard, so I can sunbathe and run and play during my free time with you. However, I am cool with leash walks and my foster mom can show you the long rope that I use when I play ball at her house.&#226&#128&#168&#226&#128&#168 I'm a really good boy and know commands like sit, wait, drop it, and most recently learned how to “shake.” I’m very healthy and strong. She says I'm as sweet as they come, and so very gentle and loving, but I do need a little bit of time to get to know you first. Because of this, I do better with adults and older considerate children that give me some time to warm up to them. And Because I’m such a cool, strong, and sensitive guy, my foster mom says my new owner has to have experience with GSD’s. &#226&#128&#168&#226&#128&#168 My mom tries to have me meet new friends, but I tend to be snappy with the other pups and I just don’t know why, but they don’t seem to like it at all. So to keep me and other pups safe, and until further training can occur, I’m flying solo Goose! I’m not sure about those pesky cats either, so my foster mom says no cats for now. I am working with a cool lady that says that I can learn not to be snappy with other dogs, so stay tuned. My foster mom can leave me out in the living room and I don't touch a thing, cause I'm cool like that. I'm great in a crate too but lying on the couch is definitely my preference, and oh a recliner is my absolute fave! I’m super gentle and loving with a calm demeanor. I do that German Shepherd “lean” too!! I am an absolutely stunning lad that will follow you around the house, that is, if you want to be my person. And when you look into my eyes, you will fall in love for sure!! I will be totally dedicated to you. In fact, you'll never go to the bathroom alone again!! &#226&#128&#168&#226&#128&#168 I'll be your Mav forever, and you can be my Goose! Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.LUNA ~10 months old. Good with larger dogs. Not good with kids and cats. Needs a companion animal and fenced yard GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only. Greetings world, My name is Luna. I am a happy and energetic young girl of about seven months old. I am looking for a family of my very own. Let me tell you a little bit about myself and see if you think we might be a match. I am a petite girl. My foster mom thinks that I am a mix. Most likely I am a German Shepherd/border collie mix. I have a beautiful gray face with fluffy ears, I have wavy blonde, and brown fur on my body. I am currently 37 pounds and will probably be about 50 pounds when I finish maturing. So a perfect size for someone wanting a more compact companion! My foster mom says that I am super super smart! I think that’s a compliment! I am a very intense dog, and I bond very quickly with my person. I am very fast, very athletic, and very focused. Foster mom says I need a job! When we are out in the yard, I will run around and then I will run up and either do a leap by my foster mom, or I will come to a sliding stop and just look at her for direction. I am extremely food, motivated, and will sell my soul or do any trick you want to try to teach me for some treats. I take treats gently , which is a good thing. I love to play ball and I love to just engage with my foster mom. I will sit on command and stare intently waiting for further direction. I also know how to give the paw! I sometimes utilize this skill to try to encourage my foster mom to give me an extra treat from her a little snack bag that she carries around. I have several furry foster siblings that I get to interact with and play with. I love a good game of chase (I am super fast and I can dodge and weave with the best, and I can also utilize my leapfrog skills. If someone trips in front of me, I just go vertical and hurdle right over them). I’m also up for the little rough and tumble play as a few of my housemates like to play tag/tackle as well. It’s all good. I am perfectly happy with that. I’m actually a fairly submissive player. I do have consider a prey drive, so I will need a home with a dog at least my size or bigger. No small dogs. No felines. (Foster mom is unsure on fish… they move around quickly. They might also get my attention. ). I also need a home without chickens. There are currently chickens at my foster home, and I am trying my best to parkour off the fence to see if I can get it to give. I would love a home with an individual or a couple that would like to work with me on agility, or some other sport, where I could demonstrate my superior skill sets. I am so eager to learn, and I am so athletic. What do you expect when you have a working line dog/herding dog combination? I would also love someone who just wants to run! I have tons of energy and I would love to be a jogging partner! My foster mom says that I need to go to a home without children under the age of 15. I am a super excited dog and I get a little nippy. It’s just an energy outlet, but my foster mom says that it’s not a good combination to have around young children. Well, I’ve tried to describe a lot of my personality traits, and hopefully I have peaked your interest if you’re looking for a fun, loving, devoted friend. Please come and meet me soon. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.AJAX ~3 years old. Good with older, considerate kids and cats. Good with most dogs after careful introduction. Fenced yard required. GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only. Jax is a gorgeous 3yr old German Shepherd who is neutered and up to date on all of his vaccines. He is house/crate trained and loves to play with his furry siblings, both big and small! He currently lives with a cat, and is generally good with her, but will chase her if given the chance. Jax is a typical German Shepherd: very sweet, smart, stubborn, loving and playful. He follows his foster mom around the house and prefers to be wherever his family is. His favorite thing in the whole world is to play ball. He will play all day if you let him, and will even "search" for it, if you lose it in the yard! Jax previously lived in a home with small children, and we were told that he was great with them. While in his foster home, he has been introduced to two young boys who are "dog savvy" and he did very well with them, but he does not currently live with children. His foster mom thinks he would do best in a home with older, "dog savvy" kids simply because of his energy level-at times he mimics a bull in a China shop! Jax hasn’t had the best life so far, so not surprisingly he is extremely wary of strangers and is very protective of his family. He will need a strong, patient leader to help him understand that not all strangers are bad and that he doesn’t need to be the “protector” of the family. He will also need a job to do, and/or a very active family, who is willing to consistently work with him on his issues, as well as someone with extensive experience with this wonderful breed. He is incredibly smart and learns quickly but will need consistent training and positive reinforcement in order to thrive. You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.SCOOBY ~1 year old. Good with dogs and older, considerate kids. Cats TBD. Needs companion animal and fenced yard. GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only. If a GSD has been your dream dog but you were worried about their size then I have the perfect dog for you. Little Scooby is still a pup and likely be 40-50lbs as a full grown adult. But his small size doesn’t affect his big personality. He’s a happy boy whose been great with dogs from 3 months – 16 years, male and female and loves them all. He’s a playful fellow who can hang with the “big dog” wrestle chasing play style. He loves toys and can happily entertain himself. He’s a little shy/timid on walks but is gaining confidence daily, it won’t be long before he’s super excited to harness up and head out the door. Scooby is crate trained, sleeps quietly all night long and is house trained with frequent trips outside. Scooby would do best in a home with a playful, confident dog, and a fenced yard – he’s a zoomie runner and needs space to release that pent up energy. Scooby is still learning not to jump up when he wants attention. He would be fine with older children. Story
This stunning girl is Nala and came in around 2 years old. She was surrendered for no fault of her own...simply because pets aren`t allowed where her family lives now. According to her owner, Nala lived indoors, is crate trained, is good with all people, will stay in a fenced yard, and walks nicely on leash. Nala is a calm girl who listens well, is friendly but not over affectionate, and enjoys time to sniff and explore our play yard. She does not like other dogs who are very energetic, but may do well with another one who is calm like her, so a meet and greet is recommended. Nala is a really nice dog who will make a wonderful addition to most any home!

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.LUCA ~1 year old. Good with dogs and cats. Not good with kids. Companion animal and fenced yard required. GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only. Whoosh! Zoom! Whiz! Is it a bird...a plane...? Nope, it's a Malinois-Husky puppy! Meet Luca, the copper-colored comet who's here to steal your heart. At 14 months old, this Mal-Husky mix might have had a rough start, arriving undernourished and wary of people, but thanks to GSRA he's now getting the nutrition, care, and love that he deserves. While we're helping him gain weight, Luca will always be on the lean side. For now, he needs to be fed separately from other dogs and outside of his crate. Once Luca learns to trust you, he becomes a total lovebug. Since he's still very much a puppy, and part Malinois, he sometimes shows affection with his mouth - but don't worry, obedience training will help him grow into the well-mannered boy we know he can be. As a mix of two intelligent, high-energy breeds, Luca is smart, vocal, and full of life! He's the ultimate lifestyle dog, needing a physically active household with someone who understands the Malinois spirit. Mental and physical exercise is a daily must for him. Luca thrives in the company of other dogs, especially an older dog who can be a playmate and help him learn the ropes. He loves his walks and is working on mastering leash manners - it's still a work in progress. With a fenced yard or open land, he'll be in his element, sprinting around and playing tug, tag, and keep away with his forever brother or sister. Dog parks? Not his thing. But at home, he's a champion playmate and loves a good game of chase! This clever boy is crate trained and settles down nicely when crated while you're out. Luca is also housebroken - he's never had an accident in his foster home. He really craves companionship, so an ideal home would be with someone who works from home, is retired, or spends lots of time at home. Occasionally, the Husky in him will burst out into the song of his people, expressing his feelings in the most melodious way. Luca is truly one of a kind. With patience, affection, and a little guidance, he'll reward you with years of love, loyalty, and endless laughable antics. If you're ready to be his leader and give him the life he deserves, Luca is ready to bring joy, adventure, and a lot of heart into your home.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.For more information on our adoptable pet list please visit: Adoptable Pet List Please join us at our next Event(s): Current Scheduled Events:         November 4, 2024, 6:19 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.BANDIT ~2-3 years old. Good with large dogs and kids 16 or older Not good with cats or small dogs. Adopter needs breed experience and fenced in yard. Residents of NC and SC Click to apply for BANDIT Please Note: This link will take you to Blue Moon Shepherd Rescue.             Meet Bandit a 2-3 year old Belgian Malinois. He is very sweet and gentle. He friendly towards people but takes a minute to warm up. He’s been through quite an ordeal in the last 2 months so that’s understandable. He absolutely loves affection and is a true velcro dog, he will follow you everywhere. Bandit is a true ambassador to his breed, but is not crazy with energy. He loves to run around his yard with his toys and take walks, he walks very well on leash.  But, when it’s time to relax he loves to lay on his bed. Here is Bandit’s story: Several weeks ago, we heard through the local rescue network that there was a dog that had been found, but the finder couldn't keep him. No other rescues were stepping up and the overcrowded shelters nearby said that the dog would be euthanized immediately as an owner surrender. We watched a video of the poor boy and saw what appeared to be a beautiful, but scared sable shepherd." "OK," we said. "We just can't let him die. We'll find room for him." And slowly, the story began to unfold. It seems that the pup (whom we now call “Bandit"), had been part of a "clear out the shelter" program where shelters relax their adoption standards to make room for additional animals. Someone adopted Bandit but he ran away. A kind woman was driving by and saw Bandit lying in a ditch. She stopped, opened her car door and Bandit jumped in, panicked and shaking. Knowing that she just couldn't leave Bandit beside the road again, she took him home, where her own dogs were none too happy to have a new pack mate. Bandit, however, showed no signs of aggression and became attached like velcro to his savior. Knowing she had to do something, the finder took Bandit to her veterinarian, who read the microchip and traced Bandit to the shelter. The shelter then called the adopters, who said they didn't want him. After some pressure from the shelter, the adopters agreed to pick up Bandit. When they arrived, Bandit freaked out, hiding and cowering behind the woman who had saved him. "I'm sorry," the woman said. "You can't have him back. You need to sign him over to me." Unfortunately, she couldn't keep him, and that's where we became involved. We arranged transport and when the van arrived, Bandit pulled out of his collar and began to run around the grounds, beyond terrified by the circumstances he found himself in. I sat down and called him, and Bandit charged toward me, wrapping both of his paws around my arms as if to say "help me!" And then, only then, did I realize that the beautiful sable shepherd I had seen in the video was actually a very handsome Belgian Malinois! If you know shepherds, you understand that a malinois is something else altogether. He has been subjected to horrible abuse and in constant fear of being hit and flinched when we moved our hands too quickly or the leash brushes his skin. He paced constantly when he was out of his crate, and he has scars on his body that attest to a very hard life. We’ve had Bandit for several weeks and he is slowly beginning to come out of his shell. He seems incredibly thoughtful and calm (for a malinois). He's sweet, gentle and kind and gives kisses willingly. He loves and craves affection, and he follows you everywhere.  He's even begun to roll over for belly rubs. But if we push him with a command, he just tenses and waits to be hit. So, at this time, we're not pushing commands. We call him and he will walk with us and follow us everywhere.  He loves being with his people. Bandit loves his crate. It's where he feels safe. As Bandit continues to heal emotionally, we'll be looking for an adopter who has experience with mals, and can balance patience and understanding with the knowledge that mals are highly intelligent and can take advantage of any perceived weakness. While Bandit is tolerant of other dogs, and lives with several German shepherds, he would probably like to be an only pet.  He has a very high prey drive, so no cats or small animals. Bandit still has a way to go, but now his future looks bright. He's a special sensitive dog who deserves a special owner. The one-on-one time he'll give you will be like no other dog. And he'll be your best friend forever.   Bandit is crate trained, neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines and on monthly heart worm preventative.  He obeys when he is called and will stay by your side and always be watching you.  Bandit needs an experienced handler that know the Malinois or German shepherd breed.  He is incredibly smart and learns quickly.  He is a very special boy who is sensitive to harsh voice tones.  He needs a gentle but firm hand.  He is not comfortable around loud voices or a lot of commotion.  He needs a quiet home and someone to lay next to and snuggle.  He is incredibly affectionate.  Bandit needs a secure fenced in yard and someone who is home a lot.  He rides great in the car and is always up for an adventure.   Because of Bandit’s high prey drive  he is not recommended with small dogs or cats.   Bandit cannot be off leash when he is not in a secure, fenced in area because he loves to chase.
