Story
We have had Brax since he was a puppy. He is 7 years old and is spunky, energetic, and a real lover. Brax is a really great dog and we love him, BUT we live on 20 acres and do not have a fenced in yard. I grew up on a farm and don't believe in caging dogs but when we try to leave Brax outside he likes to roam for a couple miles at a time and in our area this has not been good and has upset quite a few neighbors. He doesn't cause anybody harm(except for killing a couple neighbor cats) when he roams he is a friendly and playful dog, it's just annoying to the neighbors. He for some reason does not like cats and will likely kill them if around them. He is an active dog that likes to play fetch with a tennis ball, he could do this for hours if you let him. Brax would be an amazing farm or ranch dog and a great companion doing chores and working around the farm or ranch.

Story
This is our sweet rescue Sir Sampson! His previous owners surrendered him to me, as he was living in a very abusive home. Sampson was kept in a kennel for at least a year, if not longer with very minimal access to food and water. I have two other pups and Sampson has be so sweet with them. He is territorial over toys and would probably be best in a home with no small children. At this point, due to his previous environment we do believe small children are a trigger. Sampson has so much love to give and deserves a furever home that can pour into him the love and gentleness he never had.

Story
Eva came to us from Oklahoma as she was a young dog that was a stray, many times over, and eventually became pregnant and was not claimed at that point. She exhibits personality traits that lead us to believe she has deep abandonment issues and no training. She is fully housebroken and has not had issues in that area. She is loyal to her person by wanting to be next to you at all times. What we are working on with Eva...jumping up, Eva came to us with a bad habit of jumping up on people. This has decreased since we have gotten her as her fosters have worked with her on it but it still needs continual work to keep under control. It is always worse when she is excited. Eva is a very down-to-earth dog, and has not exhibited any aggression aside from letting her foster husky know that there was far too much noise coming out of his mouth. We have not seen any food aggression, but to be honest, Eva has not had a very good appetite and we have gone through various types of dog food to appeal to her and may have hit the golden ticket. We feel like Eva deserves a permanent family that is willing to work with her bad habits to allow her to be her best self. She came to us with her 7 puppies, all being added to this site and exhibiting their mother's gorgeous looks and sweet personality. Please reach out if you think she is the right girl for you, she's just a puppy herself.

Story
Izzy is one of 7 puppies that came to us with her mother. As her personality has emerged, she has shown that her passion in life is definitely drama. We aren't sure whether to laugh or face palm at her dramatics because she has proven to be the top of her class (of 7) in this particular area. She exaggerates her frustration and sometimes screams as though she is being killed when really it's simply that she can't get her leg to wake up. She's being fostered with her brother, Moses, and they are definitely a good pair since Izzy is a bit of a bossy girl. Let's just say she is a girl and proud to lead. She is crate trained and very much on her way to housetrained but as all puppies, you need to watch her signs. If you are interested in this sweetheart, fill out an application and start the process for full on entertainment in your home, she's the best!

Story
Our boy, Calvin, is your stereotypical big puppy that is still trying to grow into his body. Clumsy does come to mind but we would take it so far as to say his brain just isn't quite caught up with his massive body at just 9 weeks of age. He is one of the 2 boys in his litter and both are definitely the "beefcakes" of the bunch. One thing about Calvin is he does tend to follow his sister's lead. He's being fostered with his sister, Dakota, and she is the boss of the pair but maybe it's just safe to say he realizes he is the minority in this litter and respects a female's perspective enough to just go with it. Well done, Cal! This boy is truly a lovebug and getting snuggles is top of his list of hobbies so we feel like he would be a perfect couch potato for Football weekends (he is a Chiefs fan at this time, but he seems like he would switch if enticed). Come on, get yourself some Calvin love and fill out an adoption application quickly before someone else changes him to a Cowboys fan. LOL, no hate for Dallas, just some puppy shenanigans!

Henry is a laid-back kind of guy. He does love to play, cuddle and chew his giant bones. He will require lots of room to run, especially with a friend that will play with him. Suggest a well secured yard and a strong arm to walk him. He does not know he is big. Below is a link to Henry's DNA results. The top 2 are German Shephard (White) and American Pit Bull. the other 11 genetic breeds make for an interesting mix, but also Henry's unique view of the world! https://www.wisdompanel.com/app/s/46pc5mr

Good with dogs,
Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation. If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) 'Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?' for additional information. Armani was surrendered to rescue when her previous owners discovered she had Mega-Esophagus, which is a condition that requires her to eat her meals & sit in a chair (known as a Bailey Chair) for 15-20 min. Armani is incredibly smart even by German Shepherd standards. Her foster dad built her a Bailey chair the same day she was rescued, and by her third meal in it, she had started jumping in her chair when she saw her foster mama making her food! The first few days with Armani, she was fairly low energy and restrained, likely from lack of nutrition. She began perking up quickly, and is definitely the life of the party now, acting every bit a 'normal' puppy! Shoes and socks were not safe around her for months, but she has recently discovered how tasty kitchen towels can be! Armani is very much a typical puppy - full of energy, always ready to play (even after a 4 mile hike!!), and wildly curious about the world around her.  Armani has excelled at training, knowing sit, stay, how to get into her chair at mealtime, and great leash manners for her age. She's been well socialized thanks to her foster brother and two foster sisters, and has learned how to read and respect other dog personalities, everything from grumpy old man dog to crazy zoomie wrestling sister dogs. Armani recently earned her Canine Good Citizen title, and has a few tricks titles to her name. She's a smart cookie! Regarding Armani's Mega-E diagnosis: Armani has congenital, generalized Mega-E. Her condition is well managed without medication. She only needs 15 minutes of upright time after meals. With time and patience (which sometimes involves trying different meals and handfeeding), Armani has continued to grow nicely and thrive. Armani typically eats a kibble or a 'mush' recipe, however, as she gets bored, foster mom will sometimes entice her by feeding her canned salmon or raw meatballs. Like any Mega-E pup, Armani will need patient pet parents with extra time on their hands as feeding time and meal prep takes longer, and she requires gelatinized chicken broth cubes, instead of water. Armani is very much a pack dog - she first left her mom with her littermate, and has since grown up with a pack of three GSDs. She would love to have a friendly dog in her forever home to play with. Armani's far more timid when she goes somewhere alone, but will gain confidence if adopted as an only dog to someone who puts in the training time. She is incredibly bonded to her humans - if foster mom is working from home, she will happily spend the whole day perched on the arm of the couch next to mom's desk dropping toys on mom and breathing in mom's ear. Like any of our dogs, this sweet, gorgeous girl would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that this breed needs.  Because of that, Armani ideal owner will have prior GSD or other herding breed experience.  Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember  that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners.   Armani's adoption fee is $350, all of which goes back into offsetting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs.  We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. His personality is always happy. He will never say no to a nice walk, run, or playing in the yard. He loves kids and is patient with them, but doesn't always remember how big he is, and can knock them over. He does well on walks and is working on not pulling when he gets excited. He does okay with cats and leaves them alone in his foster home, unless they provoke him. Bones and stuffed animals are his favorite things to play with. He is working on kennel training and has made good progress, but still isn't a fan of it and currently uses a heavy duty crate. Because of that, Cosmo would do best with someone who is home a lot. Cosmo does best when foster mom gets to work from home or can take him to work with her. Cosmo is such a snuggle bug and so loving. Cosmo loves to play with other dogs, and would love a friendly, laid-back doggy sibling who is tolerant of puppy shenanigans. Like any of our dogs, this gorgeous boy would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that his breed needs. Because of that, Cosmos' ideal owner will have prior GSD, Husky, or other herding breed experience. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners. Just look at that happy face! While we don’t know an exact age on Dresden, we expect he is a young adult, maybe a year or so, based on his bouncy, goofy personality. Sweet and charming, silly and energetic, loyal and loving, Dresden would do best in a home that appreciates his puppy antics and knows how to guide him gently in training. He is a smart boy and has very quickly picked up a few basic commands: he knows “sit” and “go to bed” as his kennel command. He walks well on a leash and consistent walks and training will quickly make him a pro! He is very eager to please. His puppy excitement does still get the better of him at times, but redirection and treats for good behavior are helping him learn what we expect of him. Dresden is very friendly and playful with other dogs of all sizes and especially loves playing chase and wrestling with his foster sibling, Mouse. He can be a little pushy with his affection, but does understand and back off when he is corrected by other dogs. In typical Shepherd fashion, Dresden displays a Velcro-style attachment to his humans. He is great pup, with a fantastic temperament! Dresden's adoption fee is $350, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs.  We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age- appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. River is a one year old German Shepherd with the sweetest and goofiest demeanor! Priot to rescue, River was living in an Amish puppy mill. Now that he’s been released, he is learning just how big the world really is, and he's loving it! River needs a home that is patient as he continues to learn and blossom. Understandably, he is still learning that people can be safe. He takes a little while to warm up to people, but once he does, he is the sweetest little shadow who will always be by your side! He had never been in a house before rescue, so he is like a big puppy who is learning all the things a younger pup would be learning. He is doing wonderfully! River is doing great with crate-training and potty-training. He already knows how to sit, lay down and wait! He also walks on leash beautifully! His ideal home would have a resident dog who is fairly tolerant of a very playful puppy. River absolutely loves to play and play with other dogs! But sometimes playing is just soo much fun and he doesn’t understand it's time to take a break when other dogs give cues. River would do best in a home with older kids as he likes to lean on the people he loves. He is energetic and hilarious! He will have you laughing everyday with his adorable puppy antics. He absolutely loves attention and being petted by people he is comfortable with! His foster mom takes him to pet friendly stores and to rescue events so he can get more socialized. And every time, he gets a little more comfortable than the last time! He truly is such a sweet boy with so much potential. River is going to be someone’s best friend! From his foster mom: “It has been an incredible joy to watch this gentle, sweet, young pup discover what it’s like to be a happy dog! Watching him grow everyday is very rewarding, and I think that his future home will feel the exact same way as he continues to flourish”IMPORTANT CARE INFO: When River arrived, he was missing patches of fur and was extremely itchy. He's now regrown his beautiful fur and is very comfortable on a Cytopoint injection monthly and one tablet of Apoquel tablet daily (we may be able to decrease that after the first freeze, but there's a chance he could require both allergy meds year-round). River's adoption fee is $350, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. She is a very sweet girl with a calm demeanor who likes everyone she meets. She gets along well with other dogs. Squeaky toys and balls are her favorites. Violet is potty-trained, knows sit and shake. Foster mom tells us that she comes in from the yard when called (a treat is always waiting for her). She does occasionally bark at the fence when the neighbors are doing yard work or one of their dogs is outside close to the fence. She is treat-motivated and redirects well. Violet LOVES her walks. She walks well on a leash (foster mom is able to walk both dogs together) and walks them twice a day. Violet is not reactive with other dogs on walks. Violet is friendly with guests who come to the house: since they started fostering her, friends and family of the foster parents have come and gone without any concerns. She has always been friendly at the front door.
