Story
Looking for an excellent dog and companion, but also a great potential protection dog or competition dog? Look no further than Mia, our 2-year-old German Shepherd/Malanois mix. This breed makes a loyal and devoted companion. They tend to be a little more level headed like the German Shepherd and are not as overly active as the Malinois and they are easier to live with as a house pet. Mia came to us when her owner decided he was too busy to devote to her the time she deserved. She has completed her basic command and manner training in Camp K-9 at the Kentucky State Reformatory. Her inmate handler describes her as having medium energy. She enjoys walks, playtime with dogs and humans, and playing with her own toys. She is house trained and crate trained. She does alert at strangers sometimes. Mia has a clean bill of health and is up to date on vaccines and is on flea/tick and heart worm prevention. She is microchipped. Mia needs an owner with experience with dogs of her breed or large dog experience. No cats and no children in the home. If you would like to meet Mia, please fill out an application on our website.

Story
LuLu -Paws Behind Bars Trained Lulu is German Shepherd mix, and as such, she is a smart, athletic, bundle of energy. Although she is a puppy, our Paws Behind Bars prison dog training program is the perfect place to let her grow up. She quickly mastered her obedience training and is able to work on her social skills in all different kinds of situations. LuLu will do best in a home with an owner who has good dog experience, preferably with working breeds. We already see that If LuLu isn't "working, she is looking for puppy mischief. She will need plenty of physical AND mental exercise. At her age, she can be successfully introduced to other dog(s) in the home but we are recommending young male dogs. We do not think she's a good fit for small children or cats. Her home will need a fenced in yard. Most importantly, she needs an owner who will maintain her training and understand her high drive to please and "work". IMPORTANT: Please Keep in mind LuLu is under an year old with a life expectancy of 12 + years. Our guiding principle for adoptions is to seek the right fit for our rescues and the families, including a home that can stay committed to the animal for life. If interested in adopting, our process begins with the submission of OUR online application which can be found at www.adoptmebluegrasspetrescue.com. Additional adoption FAQ's can be found there also. Meets will be set with approved applicants only.

Story
MISTY is a 3 year old, female german shepherd that weighs 65 lbs. She is smart, affectionate, active and very ready for her forever home. This beautiful girl has been with us for a long time, 2 years to be exact. We dont know why? She's a beautiful dog that's and good with other young male dogs. She's a german shepherd so she loves people, but in a "I'll respect you if you respect me" kind of way. She has a good work ethic, so again, an owner who has the mental stamina to work with her. Her time has come! She's as brilliant as they come! Her perfect home will be with an active, adult family (she'd be fine with older children). She must have a fenced yard and will be just fine with older children. If interested in adopting, please submit an application which can be found at www.adoptmebluegrasspetrescue.com

Story
DELTA is a 3 year old german shepherd, pit bull mix female. She currently weighs 59 lbs. She is a graduate of our Paws Behind Bars prison dog training program and is very, very well trained. Like many german shepherds, Delta enjoys a "job". She is smart and she is focused. She is also very athletic. Her most outstanding physical characteristic is her ears! They are always held high and on alert! Her most outstanding personality trait is her love of water and deflated basket balls. If you're a lake person, here's your girl! If you've outgrown your school basketball years, and have an old one or two around, here's your girl - she will self-entertain for hours. Her perfect home with be one with active adults and a fenced in yard. DELTA does need to be the ONLY dog and she says NO to cats. She will be satisfied simply by having her "person" and becoming the most loyal companion in your life. If interested in adopting, our process begins with submission of our application. Please visit our website at www.adoptmebluegrasspetrescue.com and click on DELTA's picture in "Adoptable Dogs". Additional adoption FAQ's can be found here also. Story
Macy is a stunning 6 ish year old German Shepherd x Cattle Dog mix. Macy was part of a litter born to a semi-feral Shepherd in rural Kentucky. Macy has spent her entire life bouncing around foster homes after being trapped as a 5 month old pup - although her siblings and mother were adopted years ago Macy has continued to linger in rescue.    Macy is extremely affectionate with people she knows but despite being a house-dog her entire live Macy is still very skittish and shy with new people. Macy has great house manners and is very routine oriented but prefers her routine to include more hiking and less cuddling. Unless it is belly rubs in which case she will always accept those. Macy has slowly expanded her social circle over the years with various foster homes and volunteer outings and does tolerate the trappings of domestic dog live pretty well. However, she is not the sort of dog that declares love at first meeting and she still makes new people work for her trust. She is well worth the work as she is just an amazingly smart and sweet girl. Macy does not do well with children under 10 ish years of age - she finds them very in need of herding.    Macy does phenomenal with other dogs and is very dog social. She loves to romp and run in the yard with other dogs and is a very appropriate communicator with the younger dogs. Macy takes a lot of her social cues from other dogs and does best when she has a steady, confident dog to follow. Macy has lived with cats at various times and does well with both indoor and outdoor cats. She does sometimes try to herd a new to her cat but is easily redirected and respects the boundaries once they are set.   Macy is a sweet soul that is looking for a loving home that will appreciate her quirky, slightly-feral ways and give her the stability she needs to adjust and trust a new home. If you have a place in your heart and home for Macy please email Tierhavenrescue@gmail.com for an adoption application or visit Tierhaven.rescuegroups.org for more information. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 5, 2024, 8:53 pm

Story
Zoey is a beautiful young sable German Shepherd female estimated around 5-6 years of age. Zoey was a stray and we unfortunately do not know her history but Zoey is happily looking forward to having a family of her own.    Zoey is a playful and rambunctious girl. Her favorite activities include playing in muddy ponds, getting all the love, and inappropriately barking at unknown dogs and people. Zoey is learning how to navigate the world and make new human friends. While Zoey can be a very friendly and social girl she is at a critical point in her life known as the 'fear period' and can struggle with reactivity when meeting new people. It is extremely important that Zoey have a confident, experienced, handler that can compassionately guide her through the safe socialization she needs in order to learn how to navigate the world kindly. Zoey is very much a puppy and while eager to please she is still figuring out what is expected of her and how to rise to those expectations. Zoey has been great meeting volunteers with the guidance of her foster home and with those she knows is a very loving, playful girl. She has enjoyed going on hikes around private property and exploring ponds and mud puddles. Zoey is an active and athletic girl who is going to require ongoing exercise and structure to ensure her growth into a well rounded adult Shepherd. Zoey would be a great running companion, hiking buddy, and would likely excel in a number of dog sports. Zoey is NOT suitable for a home with children at this time.    Zoey is still figuring out other dogs and how to interact in a polite manner. Zoey can be very vocal when she meets new dogs and was defensive with other dogs when she arrived at her foster home. She has since settled in and is able to enjoy playgroups with other young Shepherds as well as group hikes. Zoey is slowly figuring out that she can play appropriately and doing a great job. Zoey will require ongoing structured socialization and guidance to maintain her progress as she is at an age of development where her socialization both in and out of the house is vital. Zoey is NOT friendly with cats or small dogs as she has shown a very high prey drive with both.    Zoey is a young, eager to please, and outgoing Shepherd who is searching for an active, loving, and adventurous home to give her the guidance and love she needs to grow into an even more wonderful companion. If you're the home for Zoey please email Tierhavenrescue@gmail.com for an adoption application or visit tierhaven.rescuegroups.org for FAQsVisit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 5, 2024, 8:53 pm

Story
Layla is a stunning female German Shepherd who is estimated around 5 years of age. Layla was a stray therefore we do not know her history or background prior to arrival at the shelter.     Layla is a fun girl who doesn't seem to understand the purpose of humans outside of meal times. She is aloof and generally seems to not understand why the other dogs would bother with human attention - after all humans are only good for their opposable thumbs. Layla defaults to ignoring people unless solicited for attention in which case she is happy to entertain her adoring fans. Layla has a diva energy about her and definitely thinks she runs the shows sometimes. Layla does not typically seek attention or playtime and prefers to chill out and do her own thing.  Layla has had very limited interactions with children at this time but has done well with the few she has met.        Layla is fostering with other dogs and enjoys being the bossy supervisor of anything they do. She tends to ignore the dogs 98% of the time but in the instance that she catches them playing or being too energetic she is quick to be the fun police. Her version of fun is being the fun police it seems and most dogs do not appreciate her reprimands. She gets along well with the more laid back dogs and those that tolerate her controlling nature. She would likely prefer being an only dog or with older, laid back, dogs. Layla is not good with cats or small dogs.        Layla is a beautiful girl who is looking for a patient home that will guide her in becoming a loved family member. If you're the home for Layla please email Tierhavenrescue@gmail.com or visit Tierhaven.rescuegroups.org for FAQsVisit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 5, 2024, 8:53 pm

Story
Merv is a handsome young male German Shepherd estimated around 2.5 years old. Merv was a stray so we do not know his history or background prior to arrival at the shelter.    Merv is a social, outgoing boy who happily brings joy and entertainment wherever he goes. He is a beautiful and energetic boy but not always the smartest cookie in the bunch. Merv is people-centric and is an eager to please guy who thrives on guidance from his humans. He has a big heart and is looking to someone to be his 'person'. Merv is an active dog and would be a phenomenal hiking or jogging companion. While he isn't constantly on the go, he isn't a couch potato either. Merv has only been around kids 10 + years of age but he has done well with them.    Merv prefers to be the main character in this storyline and isn't looking to share his home with other dogs. Merv has been able to acclimate to living with other dogs in his foster home but still struggles with reactivity and requires diligent supervision of his interactions with the other dogs. He has greatly improved his leash manners and is doing better at ignoring dogs in public as well.  Merv is NOT friendly towards cats or small dogs.    Merv is a beautiful, sweet young guy who is looking for some much needed guidance and love to help him thrive as a good canine citizen.
