Story
Meet FRANCO, a 2yo shepherd/malinois mix. We rescued FRANCO from the Downey shelter where he had shown up with a broken leg. He's long since healed up and he's looking for a forever home with someone who ideally has "shepherd and/or working dog" experience. FRANCO is a young, athletic dog who responds well to a confident leader. He is very loving, attentive, and loyal. He likes long walks, jogs, and he LOVES playing in water. He has been working with a trainer each week who has been teaching him and exposing him to different activities and environments and attends a small group class Check out video of him working the "lunge line" and other videos https://youtu.be/qakqEbGqKBg https://www.instagram.com/p/CZC4rD2PgvX/ https://www.instagram.com/p/CYxeijXp4zZ/ If you adopt FRANCO - he comes with a limited number of free sessions with his trainer (depending on location) to help you get off to a great start! FRANCO is about 70lbs and currently at our kennel in South Gate. He is crate-trained, house-trained, neutered, microchipped and current on vaccinations. If you are in the Los Angeles area and interested in meeting FRANCO, please fill out our brief online questionnaire (copy and paste link): www.downtowndogrescue.org/adoption-questionnaire Additional Downtown Dog Rescue information email: adopt@downtowndogrescue.org or call: 818-407-4145

Story
Meet gentle BENSON, a 90lb, black and tan German Shepherd, who spent time at two LA City shelters before we rescued him. During his time at South LA and North Central shelters he participated in several dog playgroups and was a volunteer favorite. This handsome guy is estimated to be about 4 years old. BENSON spent time at our kennel and is currently in a foster home with another dog. He has a nice calm energy with a playful side too. Don't let BENSON's "size" deter you from meeting him. He walks extremely well on leash and takes treats gently. Benson can be a little reserved when you first meet him but he enjoys being close to people and has an affectionate, loyal personality. BENSON is neutered, micro-chipped, house-broken and current on shots. If you are in the Los Angeles area and would like to meet him, please fill out our brief adoption questionnaire at downtowndogrescue.org/adoption-questionnaire and we will get back to you. #ddrbenson

Story
Riley von Romrod is a stunning 6 year old German Shepherd who doesn’t miss a thing. Extremely intelligent, she reads her handler's body language to the tee and loves to be challenged. Give her the command “Where is Mommy” or where is “Daddy” and she’ll track her person down room by room until she finds you. Loyal and affectionate with her beloved humans, she is not for the rookie owner but for a seasoned Shepherd person - one who understands the discernment, loyalty, smarts and protective instincts of the breed. She walks great on leash, alert and curious about everything. Riley is indifferent towards other dogs. She doesn’t bark at them or want to interact, and would be fine as an only dog or live with a submissive male. She will tolerate confident cats who aren’t afraid of her. She is an extremely sweet dog towards her owners, cuddling and affectionate with getting scratches and rolling over for belly rubs. She sometimes forgets she’s a large German Shepherd and will try to sit in your lap. She knows basic commands and can learn new tricks through treat-motivated play. She also understands some hand commands without using words. She loves obstacle courses or going for hikes. She is most comfortable with adult women and one alpha man. She will most likely not want to be pet by any other men, only other women with the proper introduction. Riley needs to be in a child free home and prefers adults or teenagers. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN Riley Von Romrod YOU MUST FILL OUT AN ADOPTION APPLICATION ON OUR WEBSITE: www.sheprescue.org Application link: http://www.sheprescue.org/Application_to_Adopt_a_Dog%20Main.html Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.

Story
Zeek von Zeven is a very handsome 5 year German Shepherd. "Hello, my name is Zeek. Unfortunately I have been returned to the rescue a few times. I've been told I can be very charming, but please don't ask me to do something I don't want to do. Has anyone ever said you are a “dog whisperer"? I hear I needed one of those. Just a calm home with few visitors, maybe with other dogs. I’m just kind of a curmudgeon. It is hard for me to explain to people that I am mostly well behaved but I need someone who can respect my boundaries. I do well at the rescue, I like the staff (some even call me "lover boy") and I’m fine with the other dogs. Don’t take me to outside cafes, don’t let me meet the gardener or workmen, don’t try to put a cone on me when I have been letting you know I didn't want one on. Those are reasons I lost my homes. Is that so terrible? I've heard that some people even appreciate a dog who can be protective and help them feel safe. I'm housebroken and crate-trained and do well with calm dogs (but not kitties). A few walks, hanging out in the yard or with you inside is all I need to feel like I'm in heaven. I would love to be in a home again, will you please give me a chance?" Story
Skylar von Roxy is a delightful 4 year old Shepherd mix. Sweet, friendly Skylar (who answers to "Sky") is a fun mid-sized girl who is up for anything. Skylar loves people, has done well with children, and enjoys being active and goofy. Previous owners loved and cared for Sky and say she is a sweet and loyal girl who is housebroken and crate-trained and can be trusted in the house and yard. At the rescue she is friendly with everyone and generous with kisses. A smart girl, she knows her "Sit," "Come," "Paw," and "Down" commands. She does need an experienced owner to reinforce her leash training and not allow her to run free. Skylar does well in playgroups with mild dogs, esp males and even likes to play with some of them. She says she is a definite no for cats or small dogs, however. Skylar is ready to settle into a bed with her name on it and love you for a lifetime.
