Story
Tonka is a handsome hunk of love who is bound to win your heart! Tonka is estimated to be just over a year old and is a gentle soul eager for love. He is pretty much a living teddy bear who loves to cuddle and will curl up in your lap if you let him. He can be a little shy in new places, but he is quick to warm up and will then be your best friend for life. Tonka appears to be mostly fully grown. He currently weighs around 60 lbs. Tonka came to us from an overcrowded shelter in Central California. He came into the shelter after being found as a stray with his brother. His brother was adopted from the shelter, but Tonka was overlooked and found himself on the euthanasia list due to length of stay. We knew we couldn't let such an amazing boy not get a second chance, so we were so grateful when his foster parents stepped up to help save him. He has been blossoming in his foster home and is oh-so-ready for his fur-ever home! Tonka is the epitome of a black lab. His favorite things include food, cuddles, and playtime. He is very much food-motivated and would be a great student for someone who loves to train. He has aced some of his basic manners, but his new family should expect to continue his training to help him be the best boy her can be. He loves his walks and would be a wonderful hiking buddy for someone looking for a moderate-energy companion. Tonka doesn't believe in personal space and loves to get up close and personal when nap time rolls around. Tonka loves other dogs and quickly became BFFs with the other large dog in his foster home. He seems to follow a lot of what the other dog does to know what to do, so he would thrive with another confident dog in his life to help him gain confidence. He would love a live-in-play buddy but also could do well as an only dog with lots of opportunities to play with other dogs. We haven't seen him at a dog park, but he seems like he would be a good candidate to go. We haven't seen Tonka around cats, but we think with a slow introduction and proper supervision he could do well living with dog-savvy cats. Tonka has done great with respectful kids and could make a wonderful addition to a family with kids 7 years or older. Tonka has been doing great with his house and crate training in his foster home. However, his new family should be patient while he transitions to a new environment and routine and expect a few accidents. Tonka does best being crated when his foster parents aren't home as he will get into things when not supervised. He has also done well sleeping in his crate overnight. Tonka is such a big love and he can't wait to meet his new family! If you think that might be you, submit an adoption application on our website, yolospca.org/adopt! Tonka's adoption fee is $250. Apply to adopt here! https://form.jotform.com/52017002013129/ Applications are also available on the website (www.yolospca.org) It can take up to 3-5 business days to hear back once you have submitted an application. The Yolo County SPCA is a private, not-for-profit, foster home-based animal rescue organization and does not have a shelter. All our animals awaiting adoption are in foster homes. Our adoption fees help us cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, and rabies vaccination (if over 4 months of age at intake or spay/neuter) for all animals. Dogs are tested for heartworm, started on preventatives, and given a DAPP vaccination. Adult dogs are up to date on their vaccinations prior to adoption. Puppies will be current on the vaccinations appropriate to their age. The adopter is responsible for additional vaccinations as necessary after the adoption. For more information about an animal, please email dogs@yolospca.org. For more general questions, please see our website at www.yolospca.org. March 10, 2025, 12:50 pm
