Story
Klondike is a big, handsome, smart, and athletic boy who lives in the Teal Room at the shelter. He really needs someone to give him a chance. He could be described as a “rehabilitated” ex-con, who gets along great with people, but his “big personality” is scary for some cats, so he would be best adopted as an only cat, or with another confident cat from his adoption room. Klondike needs people to play with him everyday, so he can work off some of his big cat energy. He seems bored in the adoption room, and he will sometimes sneak out to go in the lobby where he rolls around on the floor in happiness. He has no problem with people picking him up and returning him to the adoption room - we think he just likes attention and a change of pace in his day. Being a large energetic smart boy, he would benefit from having room to roam and people who engage his intellect. Giving him a rotating variety of toys, treat feeders, and offering him different kinds of play would help to engage his mind. But when he’s done playing, he loves a nap in a bed in the window best of all.For the last six months or so, Klondike’s worn a “calming” collar, which has made him much more mellow. He loves sitting and sleeping in laps for up to a half hour or more, and enjoys lots of attention, pets, and love. However, he will tell you when “he is done” with petting time in a firm manner. Although he doesn’t break skin, it is scary for people when this huge cat puts his teeth on them, so he would do best in a home with adults who respect his limits. Like the other cats in the Teal Room, Klondike has tested positive for an immune system virus called FIV. He isn’t sick and he can live a long and healthy life, but with a reduced immune system-it is essential that he never live outside. Testing positive for FIV does not mean the cat is sick - their immune system is reduced. FIV is transmitted only from cat to cat through blood, and cats who are positive can have long and healthy lives just like any other cat. Having a reduced immune system makes it vitally important that these cats never go outside. If an FIV positive cat were to get a cat “cold”, adopters should consult with their vet, just in case they need an antibiotic to make sure their cold doesn’t become something more serious.

Story
Harlow is a seven year old black and white “tuxedo cat who sadly was returned to the shelter when her owner died. Since losing her family and home she doesn’t trust people and rarely comes for pets or attention. If she is startled or handled too abruptly, she can panic bite which makes most people fearful of her. But truly - is she actually the fearful one? We’ve found out that right now, she likes pets on her forehead only, and we respect her needs. To make matters worse, Harlow isn’t grooming herself, so her coat is dull and matted. Finding a home for a fearful and unattractive cat is very difficult, and she may end up living out the rest of her life at the shelter. But we remain ever hopeful that someone will open up their heart and home to a cat who needs a second chance at life. Could you be that special person she needs?

Story
Hi. My name is Chesney. I’m three years old, but I look and play like a little kitten. If you have any toys - I’m all in! I love cheek rubs, wet food, and all my cat friends here at the shelter. The shelter is the first place I felt safe. Before I got here, I lived in a home that was… well, not good. There were a lot, - I mean a lot of cats, and we didn’t get enough positive human interaction, so we never learned to trust. When I first got to LAS I was terrified. If a person even looked at me, I ran away. It was wet food and toys that taught me that people can be kind to me. And slowly I learned to trust some of the people at the shelter. In fact, now they can pet me and I love it. I love them. When I think about getting adopted, I know that I’ll need: 1) another cat in the home, 2) a quieter environment, and 3) people who are experienced with cats like me. Despite making amazing gains with people here, moving to a new place will be traumatic, so my new family will have to know that it will take me a good while to recover. So, that’s me emotionally. Physically, I have something called *FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus). That means I have a reduced immune system. My health issues sometimes scare people away. Being POS-FIV, my adopters will just have to take super great care of me, like having nutritious food and 2X year vet visits. FIV positive cats can live long lives with a bit of extra care. I hope you are the person that will give me a forever home. Please come to LAS and talk to the staff about adopting me. I’ll be in the Teal adoption room waiting for you! *LAS routinely checks for FIV, as it is a common virus found in cats living outdoors. All of the cats in the Teal adoption room have tested positive for FIV. You cannot catch FIV, and you can’t spread it. It is only transmitted by blood from one feline to another. Please come visit our FIV cats, they are some of the friendliest cats we have at the shelter.

Story
Hi. My name is Dionne. I’m a 7 month old kitten. Before I came to the shelter I lived outside, which was very scary, especially as it got colder out. I was found in someone’s yard and they brought me to Lakeland Animal Shelter; A.warm bed, a full belly, ahh it’s amazing! I get along great with other cats, and would like them in my new home - but I’m sensitive and would need to live with kind cats that would never bully me. I’d like my new home to be a bit quieter, with people who know cats very well, and know that I need a very, very slow approach to teach me to trust. So, please only teens/adults in the home. I like pets - especially on my face and head. Just please don’t betray me and try to pick me up - that would be horrible and oh so scary! If you are the right family for me, please come to the Purple adoption room. Oh, I love to play and boxes are the best! Do you have toys and boxes? Ooo, I hope. Hope to see you soon, Love, Dionne
