Story
Meet Luna! Luna is an approximately 4 and a half year old domestic short haired gray and white cat. Luna is a special cat who has been through a lot in her life so far. She was found outside on the brink of death when she was rescued by some kind people and brought to the shelter. It has been a long recovery process for her, made even more difficult by the fact that she is an FIV positive cat. (Please read more about feline FIV below) She has been at the Humane Society for quite some time. Luna is a quiet and timid soul and may take a little while to come out of her shell. She wants to be loved and accepted like all animals do and will need a patient and understanding individual or family to allow her to grow and adapt to her new home.Luna would do best in a quiet and calm home. She would be fine as your one and only or would also be OK with one or two other quiet, non-aggressive and non-dominant cats. No dogs please.FIV is short for feline immunodeficiency virus, and it is one of the most common infectious diseases of cats globally. Researchers estimate that up to 5% of the feline population will show evidence of exposure. While FIV is similar to HIV in humans, it cannot be transmitted from cats to humans. Cats are more likely to become infected after being bitten (as the saliva allows the virus to enter the body through the open bite wound). Once a cat has been diagnosed with FIV, management becomes monitoring for secondary infections and treating them quickly when they do occur. Finding ways to reduce stress, like making environmental changes or using feline specific CBD products, can help keep their immune system strong so they can more effectively fight off infection. Cats can remain asymptomatic for years; some may never exhibit signs of exposure at all and live completely normal, happy lives. If you are interested in giving Luna the life she deserves, please fill out our online application or stop in during open hours Wednesday 6-8pm or Saturday from 12-3pm.https://www.lakeshorehumanesociety.org/online-adoption-form

Story
FIV+ cats need a loving home too! Nearly all of Lakeshore's FIV+ cats have absolutely been the sweetest, friendliest cats ever! We currently have 4 FIV+ cats with us. Here we have Pony. Pony is a black and white male tuxedo, approximately 4 years old. He is very calm and is just the sweetest boy ever! He loves sitting in your lap, cuddling or being brushed. He lives with the other FIV+ cats at the shelter and gets along well with them. Pony would do best in a calmer and quiet home. If you are interested in giving Pony or any of our other FIV+ cats the lives they deserve, please fill out our online application or stop in during open hours Wednesday 6-8pm or Saturday from 12-3pm.What is FIV:Like HIV in humans, FIV is a feline immunodeficiency virus. FIV+ cats frequently get overlooked because of this reason. It's not because FIV+ cats are higher maintenance but mainly because most people are uneducated on the topic. Is FIV Contagious:Humans cannot catch FIV: It is exclusively a feline virus. Cats can only spread it to other cats by blood: this means a deep bite or a very deep scratch. Playful wrestling will not cause this. Will my FIV+ cat be unhealthy?FIV is not a "sickness": there is no special treatment required. There is no medication required for most of their lives. All FIV does is lower a cat's immune system which can make them more susceptible to disease, so they should always remain indoors and keep up on routine vet visits. And if you notice something amiss, the cat should be taken to the vet sooner rather than later since they have low immune systems. FIV+ cats very frequently live long healthy lives never showing any symptoms.

I am a pretty cool dude. I love humans, and follow them every chance I get! Here's the thing, I am having trouble with hair loss. I came in as a tiny kitten with skin issues, and I have grown into an adult with the same problem. I am not contagious and so full of love! After some changes with litter and food, my hair is finally growing back! I do best with clay litter and food without dyes. I am neutered, up to date on vaccines, treated for fleas/worms, and will be microchipped before I go home!
