Hi, I'm Stormy and I'm looking for the perfect home to call my own. When I first arrived at HAWS, I was shy. With time, I learned staff/volunteers would be patient with me and get to know me so I built trust in people again. When I lived in the Large Colony Room, I got comfortable with people coming in and out of the room and where I lived with other cats. Most of the time, I let the other cats be themselves, but if they got too close to me or wanted to play, I'd tell them NO. So it's best that I be an only cat in your home. I now live by myself at HAWS and have the unique distinction of being the longest term cat resident at HAWS. I'm the living example of HAWS' mission "to help animals in need through sheltering and rehoming." There is no time limit for my stay, so I get great care until I find the perfect home.And my perfect home is one where my uniqueness is lovingly accepted. I'm particular and if you are too, we'll be a perfect match. Some might say I have attitude. I'll own it...I am a gal who knows what she wants and I want to be respected for who I am! If you're an independent woman like me, we might be perfect roommates!? Yes, I may have boundaries now (ex: don't pick me up and I prefer short periods of petting) but who knows what can happen in the future? I am super sweet and I like to be loved. Hi, I'm Gloria, a shy sweetie looking for a special person to love. The cat cuddler volunteers here at HAWS are being very patient with me and trying to encourage me to come out of my cubby for full-body pets but for now I will gladly accept their petting my head and back as I sit inside my cubby. You can meet me in the large colony room. The room is great because there is more space, windows to look out (just like home) and many places to climb up to perch to watch the activity outside or observe the people inside. I really want to love, be loved and be the center of attention to someone again. And that someone is going to have to be patient and willing to give me a chance (I know I am worth it). So when you come to HAWS, set aside some time to sit with me, talk softly, then give me some pets on my head ... then I hope you will fall in love with me. In the last couple months we have seen an increase of FeLV+cats. This is from 2 separate home on different sides of Elkhorn and then a home in Whitewater. What is FeLV? The technical name is Feline Leukemia Virus. Like FIV it can weaken the cat's immune system and shorten their life. Is FeLV contagious to other cats? Yes it is! It's easily transmissible between cats by saliva - grooming each other, sharing the same dishes. Cats that are positive are looking for a home with no other felines. They are able to live with other animals such as dogs. **There's a vaccine that may help the current cat in the home but you would need to reach out to your veterinary to discuss this.Best placement for FeLV kitties? ·Someone able to keep the cat indoors only·Taken to regular checkups - maybe even more than normalHow long can they live? Cats can live anywhere between 2-5 years, maybe even longer. It's not something the shelter sees often. Strangely we see more FIV cats enter our shelter.
