Fill out an application to Adopt me at the website for Surfers for Strays.      https://www.surfersforstrays.org/adopt ***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico*** Hello everyone! My name is Jack (originally Ken from the Barbie Litter ), and I have quite a story to tell you all. I was born to a feral momma dog in Mexico. Surfers for Strays tried to catch and sterilize her but failed until after we were born. I must say, I'm glad they failed before! Our mom did her best, but our accommodations were modest, to say the least. We grew up in a rundown, dirty shack with nails and broken glass on the ground. This wasn't ideal for raising pups, and sadly, some of our siblings didn't make it. Four of us survived thanks to a local woman who found our hiding spot and called Surfers for Strays for help. Until we moved to the shelter, volunteers came all the time, built a pen for us, brought clean water, lots of food for momma, gave us meds, baths, and oh, so much love. We couldn't help but love them back! Life completely changed once we got to the shelter. We made new four-legged friends and lots of two-legged ones too! We were trained, loved, cuddled, and just had a great time. One by one, we got adopted and flew to the US and Canada, including me. Unfortunately, what I thought was my forever home turned out to be only temporary. I started showing signs of hip dysplasia, a diagnosis confirmed by the vet. I was really sad to learn that my new family couldn't go through this hardship with me. I flew back to Mexico to a sweet foster home with lots of other doggies needing special attention! Don't get me wrong, I'm still a total happy-go-lucky pup - I never stop smiling and wagging my tail because I can always look at the bright side of life. Though deep down, I long for a home where I can be assured that forever means forever! Since returning to Mexico, I've received proper pain medication and when I didn't respond to that anymore, they brought me to a vet to get stemcells injected. It was just a few shots, but they made a big deal out of it, because it's such a new promising treatment! I must say, I understand the hype, because I am completely off pain meds now and I am clearly thriving! I go on an hour long walk every morning and evening and secretly I'd love to walk even longer! Please talk to them if you need more info on everything medical-related - I'm not a pro at those things! I'm an absolute master at other things, though, like cuddling, for example. My foster momma says she's never met a cuddlier dog. Even though it's hot as heck here in Mexico, I need. NEED. to touch her when I sleep next to her at night or when she is working. Who cares about the heat when you can cuddle?! I'm really friendly with all humans and other dogs. Meeting new dogs on the leash excites me a lot, and I'm currently working on saying hi in a slow way, as I guess not everyone is as excited as me all the time! The most exciting thing ever is when I see a chicken or a bird. Or a squirrel. Or a cat... You get the drill. I probably shouldn't be off-leash in such moments... who knows where those little critters will lead me! I would love to romp around all day with my foster mates, but my foster momma says that only "calm play" is allowed. She doesn't want my hip to get hurt. That's nice of her, I guess. But oh boy, would I love to play if I could. I wouldn't stop playing chase in the yard and running like crazy. My foster momma says I'm very smart, even though I'm not excessively food-driven. I do take treats, of course, but the treats must be really good. I have a distinguished palette, and my foster momma needs to step up her game! I'm very well-behaved alone in the room or in my crate. I have my basic manners straight, especially regarding food. Of course, I know Sit, Down, Paw, Turn, and Stay. I'm currently learning to walk backward and to place my front legs up on a higher level without jumping on it. Sniffing is one of my favorite things to do, and even though I walk pretty well on the leash, I have a hard time focusing on you for longer than a second (the second it takes to take the treat ;)). I'm also housebroken! I think of myself as a really good boy. Ask my foster momma if you need references. I'm trying to live every day with the utmost joy I can find in my heart! I forget everything that doesn't go so well (pain, abandonment, dog attacks,...) in a heartbeat. Focus on the positive, they say, right? I can proudly say that I've mastered this lifestyle! One thing is still missing for me to be completely happy... A permanent family. Will you be the one? Please reach out to the Surfers for Strays team if you have any questions. I promise, I'm worth it! Lots of love, cuddles, and face licks, Your Jack     If you'd like to Foster, click on the Foster Button and complete the online Foster Application. Story
***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico*** That’s Tula! We are looking for a person and/or family who would be willing to give Tula a home filled with love and care as she will certainly do this for you! Tula is truly special! Here is her story as we know. When we came across her, she was completely broken and would barely lift her head and could hardly hold herself up as she had been found pregnant, emaciated, and with three broken bones in her wrist and her left front leg. Her depressed and sad eyes told a story of the many street dogs in Zihuatenajo that SFS encounters. With all her pain and distrust of the world that failed her, she still warmed up so quickly to all of us and was so honored to be safe that we knew had to help this sweet girl.  She settled in at SFS, who gave her the love and comfort she had not known in so long, if ever. Slowly she opened up, seeking out affection and wagging her tail at all the humans that have cared for her. As the sadness left her eyes and was replaced with hope, we knew she still had a lot of fight in her to live. Thanks to a generous sponsor, she has been nursed back to health and will soon be ready to join the family of her dreams! She is approximately 2.5 years old and has gained weight as she is now 40lbs. Her bones are healing nicely and she will soon be cast-free after biweekly cast changes for many months. She has been spayed and received all her vaccines and a clean bill of health! This loving girl has been through so much in her short life, she deserves a home that will be patient, compassionate and full of love to give as she continues to heal physically and emotionally. Please, if anyone knows of someone who will have the greatest love and joy from a beautiful soul of a dog please reach out for her adoption.Thank you all kindly for helping us change the life of Tula, our warrior.   If you are interested in FOSTERING, click on the Foster Button and fill out the online Foster Application If you are interested in ADOPTING, click on the Adopt Button and fill out the online Adoption Application Check out our VOLUNTEER Opportunities here https://www.surfersforstrays.org/get-involved  If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us. Story
***Currently located in Seattle, WA*** Hello from the Tour de France Litter!  My name is Pinerolo and I and my 5 siblings were named after some famous cities of the Tour de France! While we are born in a surf hotspot, we are definitely sporty pups and are proud name bearers connected to such a paw-some event! We were born in an empoverished village in Guerrero, Mexico. Our mom is a beloved family dog, but her owners were not able to cover her sterilization. This is a vicious circle because then she had us, 6 more dogs to feed for the family, that barely had enough money to sustain themselves.  Of course we didn't see a vet in our early days, were infested by fleas and ticks and had no vaccines to protect us from the fatal viruses like Distemper or Parvo that are a consistent threat in our village. The family eventually realized that they needed help and contacted Surfers for Strays, who immediately came to our rescue.  The volunteers of the organization brought bags of food for our mom and the two other family dogs, gave us our first vaccines and also made sure we finally got rid of those itchy ticks and fleas. We received a bath with nice warm water, some not so nice tasting dewormer and lots and lots of cuddles and love. While we were waiting for space to open up at the rescue facility we got regular visits from the volunteers, who made sure we were doing well and they also brought lots of love and treats. We couldn't help ourselves but fall in love with them! And so, we were not really sad, when one day they came and brought us to our new residence. We were over the moon, when we saw the cosy beds , the fresh water without any algues , a basket full of toys and our very own food bowls  ! Our mom and the other two dogs at our birth place are now sterilized - Surfers for Strays organized and paid for that! Our quarantine time was a blast for us, getting healthier and spunkier every day! After being medically cleared we were finally able to meet the other dogs at the shelter and oh we love to romp around with them. We get to go on walks, meet new volunteers and sometimes new dogs, eat plenty of food to grow big and strong and we are just enjoying life! We are very gentle players and are not hyper active, while still being full of fun puppy energy. We are crate trained (we eat and sleep in there) but we also love to cuddle with the volunteers on the bed. Life is good. BUT. We heard it will get even better - with our very own fur-ever family!!! We heard so much about the life that awaits us in the US or Canada once we get adopted - we cannot stop dreaming about it! We want that, too! I am so excited to hear from you (soon!) Story
***Currently located in Troncones, Mexico*** Howdy, I’m Griffin! I was born as one of six puppies in a local family in the town of La Salada. Sadly, we were neglected in our first stretch of life, and four of my siblings passed.  A local animal advocate named Jimena spoke with my family and they agreed to give my surviving sibling and me up so we could receive the care we needed. We were rushed to the doggie hospital (the humans call it the “vet”) where I received some treatment for a mild skin issue and parasites.  They also sterilized my mom to ensure she has no more litters that meet the same sad fate as my siblings.  My life has been a whirlwind but I’ve kept my happy-go-lucky attitude through it all! I fall in love with every hooman from the moment I meet them and I enjoy spending time hanging out with the other dogs at the rescue, especially the puppies and playful adults. I know I am officially a teenager but in my heart I will always stay a puppy! With the hoomans I am a very trusting, wear-my-heart-on-my-sleeve kind of guy, and I open up right from the start showering you with face licks and showing you my goofy side! I truly have unlimited love to give out!  The dogs I know are my absolute besties! I could romp around with them all day and would really love a play buddy in my future home as well. I will need a slow intro though, because new dogs frighten me a bit at first. The rescue has done an incredible job with guiding me through new introductions and they will give you all the info you need to! I am working a lot on meeting dogs on the streets as well and have made incredible progress. In the past I used to be quite worried and wasn't sure if the other dog wanted to fight or play, so I prepared myself with stiffening my body, raising the hair on my back and watching the other dog cautiously. I never bark and would't lunge, but might have pulled on the leash. The volunteers are really proud of me, because I learned to focus on them (with treats or the command "Touch") instead of the other dog. I am proud of myself, too When I was about a year I had a surgery on my right hind leg, called an FHO. I forgave the hoomans right away, as they gave me extra love and treatos . I did lots of physiotherapy work and also received stem cell therapy in summer 2024. I don't understand a lot about all the vet-things, so please reach out to the Surfers for Strays team, if you have any questions! Even though I can limp a little sometimes, it doesn't hold me back whatsoever! I go on hourlong walks with the volunteers and can play all day long with my doggie friends. I am a really happy dog and nothing is going to ever make me lose my positive attitude! According to my current foster momma, I am truly one of a kind. I am a big baby who wants to cuddle a lot and at the same time I am always down for action and adventures. I might not be the biggest fan of the car, but if you don't drive and turn like a maniac (like our manager - you don't know that from me ) I am up for it! As long as I can be part of the team! I am also great at relaxing and can be really good with down time while my foster momma is working for example. I can get super excited when you're coming home or when food is being prepped or when we go for a walk. I will jump with all four legs simultaneously in the air around my current hooman trying really hard not to bump into her, because you have to be respectful, right? I know how to Sit, Down and Wait, I walk well on leash (the first 2 minutes don't count, do they?), I am crate trained and actually love my crate and I can touch your hand on command with my snout.  My foster momma says I am the happiest, most life loving puppy she has ever met and that I am a really funny dog, that makes everyone laugh, because apparently I can be a bit clumsy. Okay, cut the "a bit". She sometimes calls me "Derp", not sure why, but I guess it's my second name. I love making everyone laugh, that's makes for a good mood, so I think I am doing a fantastic job! With that being said, I can’t help but think about my next great adventure: traveling to the U.S. or Canada and emBARKing () on a lifelong journey with a family of my own! To my future family reading this - I love you already! Story
***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico*** Hi! I’m Brownie! And if you’re looking for a sweet spot in your life, I’m your girl. Like a lot of the dogs in Mexico, I was roaming the streets for the first seven months of my life, looking for food and love and somewhere warm to call my own. I was lucky enough to not have had any puppies of my own during that time, because taking care of myself was more than enough! When I was picked up by the rescue, there was some hope that I was finally on my way to brighter days.My friends here say that I’m a sweet girl with lots and lots of energy. When I play, I play HARD, and all I want to do is play! Just making up for lost time, I guess. I would do so well in a house with other dogs or lots of playdates and fun activities! Despite my past, I am already warm and affectionate with my human friends. I haven’t met very many, though, so I can be a bit timid at times. Anyone looking to bring me into their home should be prepared to spend one on one time with me not only so that I can learn how to be a girl of high society, but also so I can build the trust I so desperately want with a person. I am learning quickly how to be a pet, but it’s helpful for my friends to remember that I wasn’t a pet for the first formative months of my life.I hope that you’ll consider welcoming me into your family. At the end of a long day, I promise that a Brownie is all you need!Love and facelicks, your Brownie   If you are interested in FOSTERING, click on the Foster Button and fill out the online Foster Application If you are interested in ADOPTING, click on the Adopt Button and fill out the online Adoption Application Check out our VOLUNTEER Opportunities here https://www.surfersforstrays.org/get-involved  If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us.
