Story
We rescued Sidney from a horrific shelter in Memphis, TN. When we got him, he was skin and bones and had some barrier aggression issues (who knows what horrors he suffered there) It didn't take long for Sidney to realize he was now safe and could start letting down his guard. Sidney Poitier has filled out and is truly a stunning dog. Sidney is about 2 years old, and is at his healthy weight of 80 lbs. Sidney is a very intelligent fellow, he learns quicky and is anxious to please. He will do well with a job and/or a lot of stimulation, long walks and hikes. He will do well with an experienced dog person. Sidney loves meeting new people. He has done well with large dogs he has met, however he is would not be good with small dogs or cats. Sidney does show barrier reactivity, however, when the barrier is removed (whether it is a crate, fence or car window) he show absolutely no issues. Because Sidney likes a lot of activity, he will need a securely fenced yard (must be a physical fence, not an electric or invisible system) He is neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped and on monthly treatment for flea/ticks and heartworm prevention If you are interested in Sidney Poitier, email cox_ann@bellsouth.net for an application

Story
Alice + Hazel are a VERY sweet young bonded pair of terriers who were surrendered to the shelter with a flea infestation which has been alleviated. Their poor skin is in need of some serious TLC which they got with a trip to the vet and some special shampoo and some meds that help with the infection. They do continue to be on allergy meds and will probably need to be on them for life. Other than that little thing their health is great! We do believe these two are siblings and they love to play together! They also love to get snuggles from humans and LOVE attention and pets and would be such a fun, goofy, sweet addition to any house! They love to play rough with each other and can be a lot for other dogs, so any other dogs in the house would have to be ok with that. They also can gang up on another dog in the house but seems to sense when a dog is a little older and more frail so do not seem to try and initiate play so a dog like that in the home could be ok. Alice can also jump HIGH so any new family would need to know that about her! They can be anxious when in a new environment but warm up quickly and ready to find their forever home together! They would do better in a fenced in yard or a commitment to walk them regularly on leash. But we cannot stress enough how sweet these two are with people-February 3, 2025, 3:20 pm

Story
Waylon is an absolute DREAM of a dog, really just the perfect boy! He does great with kids, does amazing in a home, is housebroken, crate trained, does great in a car, LOVES to be active and play and go on both runs and walks with his fosters, is super smart so easy to train, loves to snuggle and will calmly hang out with you while you work or watch TV, and is just the best boy! He seems really eager to be around other dogs so we don't see why he couldn't have dog buddies to play with! He is 100% joy and will be excited to see you every time you come home...and his fosters are working on trying to temper that pure joy that causes him to jump in happiness, but it always comes from a place of love and light! The struggles that Waylon has are purely medical but we have come to a plateau where with a great regimen of his medications, his diagnosis of Perennial Fistula Disease is easy to manage. And the nice thing is he takes his medications great! He does have to have an ointment on his rear, and does take some other oral meds, but he takes them very well. His condition also does require him to be on a very regimented diet that cannot be strayed from but Bonaparte's Retreat is more than happy to continue paying for his meds and his food because we definitely don't want that to be a deterrent for this perfect boy to find a home. He does require someone who can monitor his poops because they do need to be monitored, but he poops great on a walk which makes it easy to monitor! He also does need to be with a family that can strictly monitor his diet and not allow him to counter surf but he eats his special food great! We really can't speak more highly about Waylon and he would make some active family or single person an amazing BFFAugust 27, 2024, 11:44 am

Story
Machi is new to Bonaparte's and we pulled her because she was extremely terrified and shut down at the shelter. But as soon as she got to her temp foster's home she opened right up and has been doing great ever since! We do feel like she is a dog that needs other companion dogs in the home but loves to snuggle, play, and definitely needs a fenced in yard to get her young energy out! She will be checked out at the vet first of April so will be coming soon until we know she is all good.April 7, 2025, 10:11 am

Story
Opal came to us not spayed and with a couple of mammary masses and a mass in her ovaries. We have since spayed her and had her masses removed and biopsied and all looks good! Eyes will need to be kept on her but she is ready to find her forever home-yay! Opal is suuuuch a sweet girl and loves to snuggle and is great with other dogs. Really we think she could be good with any family! She does still need to gain some weight but now that she is with a foster they can work on that! Opal cannot be in a home with stairs-she does not like to be picked up and stairs are a challenge for her.April 7, 2025, 10:33 am
