Story
Age: 10 months Size: 65 lbs Estimated breed: Pit bull/Staffordshire bull terrier Perfect home: Zara has grown up with older kids 12 and older and done well with them. She has lived with cats but enjoys the chase, so needs a cat-free home. She loves the other dogs in her foster home who she's grown up with, but can be wary meeting new dogs, especially super energetic and playful ones. She would do okay with another medium or large dog with a slow introduction and decompression time. She'd also thrive as the only pup in the home! Update from my foster 6/25: Every morning when I am taking 30 seconds to put on my shoes to go outside with the dogs, Zara waits patiently at the door, staring lovingly at me (even after sleeping beside our bed all night). She is so loyal! How could you not smile when you’ve got her little face watching your every move? After a long day of helping me work and playing in the yard, she cuddles up on the couch with all her doggie foster siblings, not leaving any room for the human family members! She is such an easy pup to have around and deserves a family of her own. She’s waited six months already, far longer than all her siblings who joined forever homes months ago. Update from my foster 4/7: Zara is rocking it at her Board and Train! During her first week, we were helping her understand expectations and boundaries when it comes to food, bones, play time, and general manners. All the concerns she came with are now in the past and we are focusing on teaching her how to be the best puppy she can be. Which she's already amazing I might add. Seriously......if I were in the market to add to my zoo, Zara would be staying!! She is the best puppy and will make an amazing companion for the right family. Zara has been learning skills such as Sit, Focus, Orienting when called, Walking on leash, and Leave It this past week. Aside from those skills that are strictly verbal, we always start with hand cues and body language. Why? Because dogs don't understand English until it is taught to them. Dogs communicate through body language, so we work with them in ways they best understand before introducing a foreign language. She is super smart and quite the cuddler!   Zara and her family came to us under very sad circumstances. While conducting community outreach and providing straw and dog houses, our southern shelter partner came across mama Zainab and her fives babies, living outside in the middle of winter. Mama was chained up and had a heavy padlock around her collar, weighing her down. She was trying to nurse her five babies while she was already emaciated herself. Volunteers were able to convince the owners to surrender the puppies to them so they could seek immediate veterinarian care. Unfortunately, one of the puppies did not make it, but the remaining four puppies responded well to getting food in their tummies and warming up inside.    The Z litter is now safe in foster care and can't wait to find forever homes! They are super sweet, spunky little puppies. They love playing with each other and are currently in foster care with other dogs, a cat, and children. They are blank slates ready to be shaped and molded into the perfect dog by their forever families! They are looking for families with lots of time and patience to teach them everything a young dog needs to know.    To adopt Zara, please apply on our website! www.nirvanaanimalrescue.org/adoption-application   Please note we cannot guarantee the age or breed of any of our dogs. All of our dogs are working on their crate and house training.   PA Kennel License #18366July 30, 2024, 10:27 am

Story
Age: 4 years Size: 55 lbs Estimated breed: Staffordshire bull terrier/Mountain cur mix Update 9/9 : Zainab has come a long way since she was rescued off the chain in January! She has received treatment for heartworms and spayed and is ready to join a forever family! Zainab is a super loyal girl who bonds strongly with her people and pack. She prefers to be the star of the show and not share her people’s attention with other animals in the home, and after everything she’s been through, who can blame her? Fortunately, she’s not reactive to seeing other dogs on leash and can walk by them without much excitement. She is crate and house trained and knows how to “sit” for a treat, too! She’s playful but not super energetic and could join you on hikes, or spend a lazy day on the couch. She’s such a lovable girl who deserves the absolute best forever home!   Mama Zainab was found living on a chain in South Carolina, nursing five babies off her emaciated body. One puppy unfortunately didn't make it, but we were able to save the remaining four puppies and placed them into foster care. Zainab is now also safe with us in foster care and looking for her own forever home!    Zainab is around 4 years old and weighs 55 lbs. She is a sweet and gentle girl who clearly has never lived inside a home before. She was perplexed by the television in her foster home and walked right into the sliding glass doors. She is learning just how nice indoor living is and picks up quickly! She walks nicely on leash without pulling and loves meeting new people.    Zainab injured her eye while living on the chain, and her former owner never pursued medical treatment. She was seen by our ophthalmologist, who advised that while she is totally blind in one eye, it causes her no pain or discomfort, so no treatment is needed! She is heartworm positive and will receive treatment with the rescue.     After everything she's been through, Mama Z deserves to find a perfect forever home, and we are committed to finding one for her!    To adopt Zainab, please apply on our website! https://www.nirvanaanimalrescue.org/adoption-application   Please note we cannot guarantee the age or breed of any of our animals. All of our dogs are working on their crate and house training.   PA Kennel License #18366December 27, 2024, 11:43 am

Story
Age: 8 months Size: 35 lbs Estimated breed: Boston Terrier/Cattle Dog mix (among many other breeds, according to her DNA results!) Perfect home: Active home, no kids under 12, no cats/small animals   Lucy is an 8-month old Boston terrier mix, whose personality far outweighs her size. She came to live with us when she was just a few weeks old after being rescued in Texas. In the time Lucy has been with us, we have watched her grow into herself. And what a character she has become!    Lucy lives with two other canine friends and a cat. Her and the cat have a mutual understanding. They are not exactly friends, but they respect each other's privacy (for the most part). As far as her canine siblings, Lucy has a strong bond with our Bernese Mountain mix (Sammy).    Sammy and Lucy have been friends since the start. It's quite the combination with Lucy being all of maybe 30 lbs to Sammy's 90 lbs. Rough play is the order of the day, with Lucy regularly ending up airborne after Sammy decides he's had enough and tosses her out of the way. Lucy, not one to give up easily, comes back for more and more. This cycle continues until Lucy tires out and heads to her crate or the couch to rest.   Speaking of crates, Lucy is crate trained and does very will with in. In fact, she usually goes in on her own when she wants alone time, or when we get ready to wind down our evening. Lucy is also excellent with being house broken and accidents are few if any in recent months.   Lucy is very independent and thinks she's a BID dog. She is a bit headstrong with leash training, and also has a very active prey drive. If Lucy sees a squirrel or other small critter, she gets pretty excited and it is tough to break her focus.    Lucy would do best in a home with another large canine companion and a fenced yard. She loves her big brother Sammy and often cuddles with him when they tire out after their backyard wrestling matches. She looks to him constantly for entertainment, reducing some of the burden on us.   We are proud of the young lady Lucy has become. If you are looking for a smaller dog with the heart of a big dog and have the time to work with her, Lucy would love to meet you!   To adopt Lucy, please apply on our website! https://www.nirvanaanimalrescue.org/adoption-application   Please note we cannot guarantee the age or breed of any of our animals. All of our dogs are working on their crate and house training.   PA Kennel License #18366 December 27, 2024, 11:43 am

Story
Age: 1 year Size: 50 lbs Estimated breed: Pit bull terrier mix Perfect home: No cats, no dogs   Laszlo was surrendered to a local shelter when he was only six weeks old, along with his siblings and his mom. Everyone was extremely malnourished, suffering from skin infections, dehydrated, and lethargic. We were able to get everyone into foster care, and each dog thrived and found forever families of their own!    Now, one month shy of his 1st birthday, Laszlo finds himself being returned to the rescue by the only family he's ever known, and our hearts are absolutely broken for him. Laszlo grew up with two little girls who he loved dearly, and reportedly looked for them whenever they left the house. He grew up with another large male dog, who he played well with, but also got into quite a few scuffles with. From what we can gather, their play would become too intense, causing the dogs to fight. This is an overstimulation issue and can easily be corrected and managed with training, especially since Laszlo was adopted when he was still a puppy. Unfortunately, his family didn't think training was necessary :( During a scuffle with the other resident dog, one of the children in the home tried to separate the dogs (no adults were present for the fight) and got bit.    We got Laszlo back into our care and into a board and train program, where he is excelling! He is super smart and eager to please and picking up on all his basic obedience and leash manners quickly. He would be happiest as the only pup in the home but can pass by other dogs on leash just fine without reacting! He just prefers to be your one and only, soaking up all your love and attention. We’d love to line up a home for him directly after training! As an added bonus, his adopters will receive all three of his follow-up lessons with our professional trainer for free.   We are committed to finding Laszlo a forever home who is as invested in his well-being as we are. After losing the only family he's known, he deserves the absolute best FOREVER home, one who will commit to training, daily exercise and mental stimulation, and plenty of love.    To adopt Laszlo, please apply on our website! https://www.nirvanaanimalrescue.org/adoption-application   Please note we cannot guarantee the age/breed of any of our dogs. Story
Age: 9 years Size: 8 lbs Estimated breed: Chihuahua/Pug mix   Wilbur was confiscated from a home with over 40 chihuahuas living in terrible conditions. Rescuers found dogs living under the home, feces completely covering the floor, and newborn and nursing babies living in couch cushions and under furniture. Several dogs had began leaving the house out of an open window in search of help. Help came just in time, and all 40 surviving dogs were taken to the shelter and checked out by a vet. Along with several other rescues, we agreed to get the whole group out of the shelter and into rescues and foster care!    Wilbur is the oldest dog of the bunch, but don't let his age fool you - he's still got plenty of pep in his step! He is a sweet little old man with a sweet and gentle demeanor. Wilbur does well with all dogs and people, and we assume he'd do okay with cats too. Due to his age, we recommend he to go a home with older kids or no kids. He has some eye issues and will need daily eye drops to manage dry eye, but does still have some vision and gets around just fine. Wilbur is looking for a comfy retirement home to be spoiled for the rest of his days!   To adopt Wilbur, please apply on our website! https://www.nirvanaanimalrescue.org/adoption-application   Please note we cannot guarantee the age or breed of any of our dogs. All of our dogs are working on their crate and house training.   PA Kennel License #18366November 8, 2024, 11:32 am

Good with kids, Good with dogs, Good with cats, Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Age: 1 year Size: 55 lbs Estimated breed: Pit bull/Am Staffordshire terrier Perfect home: At least one other resident dog   Sister was surrendered to an overcrowded, rural shelter along with her sister, who was nursing five newborn babies, and an adult male dog. Sister was the most terrified of the whole group and sat shaking like a statue at the back of her kennel. She was in what we call shelter shock - surrounded on all sides by barking dogs, with nothing but a cold, hard floor to lay on, without the comfort of her doggie family. Dogs like Sister do not survive in a shelter environment for long, so we jumped into action and got her into the safety of a foster home in PA!    Sister is quite simply, a perfect dog. She is very shy and timid at first meeting with people but opens up very quickly and bonds strongly to her people! She shares her foster home with cats and dogs and does amazing with them. Doggie pals give her confidence, so she'd do best in a home with at least one other friendly dog for her to bond with. One look into her soulful eyes and you'll fall in love with Sister just like we have. We can't wait to see her in a loving forever home with a family who will love her unconditionally!    To adopt Sister, please apply on our website! https://www.nirvanaanimalrescue.org/adoption-application   Please note we cannot guarantee the age or breed of any of our dogs. All of our dogs are working on their crate and house training.   PA Kennel License #18366  November 30, 2024, 1:39 pm
