Story
PHOEBE / 6 yrs / FEMALE / MIXED BREED / WEIGHT: 62lbs-28kgs) / Rescued from HAS / Currently fostered in Toronto Good with dogs and kids / Untested with cats / House and crate-trained Major medical concerns: recently had successful surgery on low-hanging mammary glands and is currently on the mend Hello! I'm Phoebe the happy, low-maintenance, outdoor-loving dog you've been looking for. I love going on walks and exploring the area and while I don't love too much puppy energy, I'm always excited to meet new people and their dogs! Did I mention I'm pretty easygoing? I'm happy to adjust my schedule to match yours and I'm pretty good at entertaining myself if you're busy or gone out. I can happily spend my time going between tearing up my stuffed toys to napping in my crate until you're ready to hang out. As a bonus, I'm completely house-trained, crate-trained, and not destructive in the least. You can leave me home alone in or out of the crate and not have to worry at all! I spent a lot of my life being pregnant and becoming a momma and thus have a very nurturing and a little overprotective nature. Sometimes it takes me a bit longer to accept a new person until I feel safe around them, but if you give me some time and lots of treats, we'll soon be friends forever! Fortunately, in my previous life, I was very well-trained. I have great recall and I know all my basic commands including sit, paw, and even go to bed. I love showing off my skills or learning new ones if it means I get treats! More importantly, since I'm pretty calm and don't tend to jump, I'm known to be great around children of all ages. I would just prefer a slow controlled introduction at the beginning to make sure our energy levels match. Oh, one more thing I need to tell you is that I LOVE car rides! I'm pretty great when it comes to getting in the car but you should probably seatbelt me, or I'll find my way into the front seat to hang out with you while you're driving. I currently live in downtown Toronto. I don't mind the noise or city life and fortunately, there aren't too many things that scare me. I am hoping, however, to find a home with a backyard or access to a green space very close to home. I would be okay as an only dog or in a home with another low or medium-energy dog. I don't mind if you have to go to work every day and leave me home or if you prefer I sleep in my crate while you're gone, as long as you're willing to go outside with me a few times a day and once in a while invite me to snuggle up and nap or watch a movie with you. In return, I promise to love you unconditionally, always and forever! I hope we're a match because I can't wait to meet you! Story
Meet Toast the hunk: On hug duty and squirrel patrol! Toast / 1 yr 7 mo / Male / Mixed breed / 25 kg - 55 lbs / Rescued from Tennessee  / Currently fostered in Mississauga
Good with dogs and kids / House and crate-trained

Ready to be adored? Meet Toast, this boy’s charming, affectionate and playful personality lights up any room he’s in. His stoic face and beautiful brown eyes might make him seem serious and sad but don't be fooled-Toast is all about fun, naps, hugs and belly rubs. This big ol’ lovebug enjoys hosting parties, chewy toys, outdoor sniffaris, car rides, and lounging with his humans.

Toast is a big-time hugger and thrives on socializing - saying hi to every person and dog he meets when he’s allowed to! He's quickly learning some obedience commands, although he may get distracted and sometimes outright stubborn, he is a hard worker and loves to please his people.
Toast is looking for a family that will provide him the structure, routine and advocacy he likely hadn’t had in his early year as young pup. He has adjusted quite well to home living since his prior rescue arrangements living outdoors at a dog rescue statuary in Tennessee after he was saved from a high kill shelter.  Toast has mastered house, potty and crate training and can be left for up to 8 hours but does have a vocal personality that might not be ideal for apartments or close neighbours. Toast has learned to settle in his crate and a puppy proof space but might howl and whine like he’s telling you at various times "I'm being a good boy, but I can’t wait till you’re home" in his native dog language and then goes back to napping or chewing on his Benebone.   A bonus ideal family checklist for Toast would be a house with a fenced yard where he could lounge, play, and watch squirrels in peace but is not necessary, but if his physical and mental needs are met, like going for walks where he can sniff to his heart’s content, he wouldn’t need a fenced yard. Toast loves the attention he gets from kids and do well in a home with kids who would be ok with his size, hugs, and puppy paws.  Toast loves the company of his canine pals and lives in a foster home with a dog but had shown some early signs of guarding behaviour with the dog when he arrived that has since been managed with structure, supervision and removal of potential triggers like high value chews. As we continue to learn about Toast, he will thrive as the only dog in the home as he loves to be the centre of attention. It’s important to note no guarding concerns have every progressed to any humans.  His initial excitement around cats has calmed, but because of his prey drive outdoors, a cat-free home would be ideal. As for squirrels, they're his sworn nemesis, and he loves nothing more than watching and hoping to chase them.

Toast's loving nature and fun personality make him an excellent family dog. This love bug would thrive with a family that would take him on adventures, and is ready to give and receive lots of affection. If you're ready to give Toast a home where he can continue to thrive apply today at: www.caninehaven.org/dog-application

Story
ICY / Female / 3yrs 6mths / 20lbs or 9kgs / Mixed Breed / Originally from Barbados / Fostered in Ajax Good with cats / Shy with other dogs and kids / Housetrained Meet the incredible Ms. Icy! Despite her name, Icy is a gentle soul with a heart full of love who is looking for her perfect family. Icy is usually a shy, low-key gal, but she has a playful streak, often sneaking away with slippers or other socks of yours so she always feels close to you. Throughout the day, you can find her napping on the couch, getting pampered (it’s tough to say no to her puppy dog eyes!) or gnawing on her chew stick. When it comes to behaviour, Icy is quite fearful around new people and environments, and she needs time and patience to feel comfortable. She’s good with other dogs, especially smaller ones, and enjoys calm interactions. However, she is very nervous around loud noises and her instinct is to retreat. She likes to explore her backyard, and is getting braver at going on short walks, but will need your love and patience to help build up her confidence. Icy would thrive in a quiet, patient home, preferably in a quiet suburban or rural setting. A fenced yard would be ideal to give her a safe space to explore. While she could be an only dog, she would thrive with a confident canine companion who can help her build her confidence. An adult-only home or one with older, respectful children would be the best fit for her. She's learning basic commands like "sit," "come," and "shake a paw" and enjoys training sessions that build her confidence. She adores getting love from her humans - Icy will be the cutest little shadow you could ever imagine! If you’re looking for a gentle, loving dog who just needs a little extra time and confidence to blossom, Icy is your girl. Story
Kody Breed: Pointer/ Cattle Dog mix Gender: Male Weights: 46 lbs Age: 2 yrs Good with dogs: Yes Good with cats: yes Good with kids: Yes older kids Housetrained: Yes Crate trained: Yes Leash Trained: Yes Energy level: Medium Health Concerns: None HW status: Negative Spay/neutered?: Yes Tell us about this dog: Kody was saved from euthanization at a high kill shelter in San Antonio, Tx. It is believed that at some point Kody was physically abused and would get defensive when he felt threatened. Kody has come a long ways and his trust in people has grew more and more everyday. He is an active fun boy who loves kids, getting belly rubs, and playing with toys. Kody is very treat motivated and is eager to learn new things. He enjoys car rides. Kody loves going for walks, hiking, and/or jogging. Kody had been through behavioral training prior to coming into our rescue. These are notes from the trainer. Kody knows multiple commands. Below are the commands he knows and notes from his trainer: - look at me/pay attention Sit Come here- recall Touch- nose to hand target command Wait- pause in action- ESPECIALLY at doors!! Settle- relax Leave it- back away and leave that alone (barking/fixation/food/ leash excitement) Place- go to k-bed (point) Let’s go- change in direction/follow me Kennel- go into kennel or crate “Uh-uh”(buzzer type sound) or firm NO SIR for verbal correction. “Ok” for release WITH FOOD- - ANY resource guarding must be corrected verbally and redirected with obedience. As soon as he trusts you he is fine, but with new people He will test. ANY physical threat or punishment will overwhelm and escalate him- his behavior demonstrated that someone tried to punish the growling out of him and he gets defensive- you must redirect him into the bed and release him to eat when friendly and calm. He is calmer and eats better in a home environment- crate, hand feeding or bowl by your feet in a house he does well with. In a kennel he tends to be more defensive, so work outside the kennel barrier, then move inside and get him comfortable with you being in there with him while he eats before touching him while he eats.
