Story
Searching for your new best friend that will give you all of their attention? Good news, Whiskey is looking for the exact same thing! Whiskey is hoping to find a furrever family that shares his love of adventure and play. ~ Whiskey is looking for a home that will keep him active and give him plenty of enrichment.~ This guy always has lots to say, so he is looking for a house with no shared walls so he does not upset his new neighbours!~ Whiskey would like his new family to be ready to take him to at least 1 training class or sign up for a GoodPup Scholarship at the time of his adoption to help work on his basic training, manners and socialization.~ He does not understand how big and goofy he is, due to his lack of manners and his size he is looking for a home with older children.~ Whiskey seems to have characteristics that resemble hound type breeds. His new family should do some hound research before bringing this sweet boy home.~ Whiskey is looking for a home with no small animals or cats due to possible prey drive.Regularly Exhibited Behaviours Noticed:- High Energy- Vocal- Prey drive- Jumpy- Mouthy- Under-SocializedExplanation of Behaviours:- A young dog who is very high energy and will need a lot of time, attention, training, exercise, and enrichment daily to do well.- He will need to continue to be socialized in a safe and proper way to help him up for success in the future.- He will need to have continued work on his basics as well as more difficult behaviours such as jumping and mouthing.- He can be vocal at times, especially when seeking attention. This dog would benefit from:An active home- An adult home or family with older children- No small animals or cats- No apartments or homes with shared walls- Lots of training and socialization- Lots of time and attentionTraining needs/behaviours that need to be worked with for this dog:- Basic training- Socialization- Work on manners and self-control (including mouthing and jumping)Field trip program:The Field Trip with Whiskey was a lot of fun. We went on a long walk and spent time playing in the backyard. He never wanted to stop! He was good in the house. He didn't even attempt to go on the furniture. He likes catching balls and running around, so he would love a backyard! He is a good boy, with tons of energy! He will make a good best friend!**For more information on any behavior's stated above, please check out our behavior factsheet: https://kwsphumane.ca/BehavioursandDefinitions**Please remember that animals are coming back from foster care to the centres for their meetand greets. Story
Meet Maria, a spirited and loving large mix breed dog with a zest for life! Maria is full of energy and adores long walks, cuddling up, or playing at the park. ~ She's a strong puller on the leash and can be quite vocal, so she'll need an adopter who can keep up with her and work on her manners.~ Though Maria lacks basic obedience skills, she's eager to learn and would thrive with someone committed to helping her become the best girl she can be. To set her up for success, Maria will need to be enrolled in one in-person positive reinforcement training class or receive a Goodpup scholarship.~ Maria came to us as a stray with a severe ear infection that caused her ears to drop. While the infection has been treated, she remains a bit touch-sensitive, so a gentle approach is key. Due to her vocal nature, Maria wouldn't be the best fit for an apartment or shared-wall dwelling.~ She would do best in a home with older, dog-savvy children who understand how to respect her space. If you're looking for a loyal and lively companion who's ready to take on the world with you, Maria is your girl!Regularly Exhibited Behaviours Noticed:- High Energy- Nervous/Shy- Touch Sensitivity- Barrier Reactivity - Vocal- Separation anxietyExplanation of Behaviours:- Maria is an active and high energy dog, her new family will need to provide her plenty of daily exercise, enrichment and training.- Maria can be touch sensitive specifically with new people or when she is anxious/stressed. Her new family will need to slowly work on creating positive associations to touch.- Maria has shown to be barrier reactive at times which results in her being vocal towards whatever is triggering her. This dog would benefit from:- Active but quieter home- Older dog savvy children- Lots of training and socialization- Lots of time and attention- No ApartmentsTraining needs/behaviours that need to be worked with for this dog:- Basic training- Basic manner (jumping up, pushy interactions and pulling on leash)- Socialization- Sensitivity to touch and new things- Barrier Reactivity**For more information on any behaviours stated above, please check out our behaviour fact sheet: https://kwsphumane.ca/BehavioursandDefinitions**Please remember that animals are coming back from foster care to the centres for their meet and greets. Meet Minnie, a sweet senior which is part of our duo looking for their forever home together! Minnie, a medium-sized mix, has had a rough start in life, bouncing between homes for years, but now she's ready for stability and love. She's bonded with her mom, Freckle, and they are inseparable. These two must be adopted together!~ Minnie can be nervous around new people and may bark out of fear, but once you offer her a treat, she melts into a happy, loving dog. ~ Minnie and Freckle would do best in a home as the only dogs but could potentially live with another senior dog after a slow, careful introduction. They can be reactive towards new dogs at first, so they would thrive in a house, making them a poor fit for an apartment.~ These lovely seniors would prefer a calm environment with older, dog-savvy children, ideally teenagers. ~ While Minnie can be a strong puller on walks, she loves nothing more than soaking up the sun and enjoying the simple pleasures of life. If you're looking for a devoted pair to bring joy to your home, Minnie and Freckle are waiting for you!Regularly Exhibited Behaviours Noticed:Under-SocializedJumpy / MouthyFearful / NervousExplanation of Behaviours:~ Minnie is an active dog with moderate energy who requires daily attention, training, exercise, and enrichment.~ She will need consistent work and training to address challenging behaviours such as mouthing and jumping.~ Minnie can be shy and nervous at first, requiring her new family to introduce her slowly to new people, situations, and environments.~ She has shown reactivity to new dog & new people due to fear or discomfort, particularly when in her kennel, on leash or behind barriers.~ Minnie has some sound sensitivity and can be touch sensitive, especially with unfamiliar individuals. She is uncomfortable when objects are moved over her head, so desensitization will be key. This dog would benefit from:An active homeNo apartment livingIdeally no other dogs in the homeConsistent trainingAmple time and attentionLots of socializationTraining Needs/Behaviours to Work on:Basic trainingBasic manners (jumping up and mouthing)Socialization, especially addressing nervousness in new environmentsDesensitizationReactivityConfidence buildingLeash skillsFor more information on any behaviours listed above, please check out our behaviour fact sheet: Behaviour and DefinitionsPlease note that animals coming from foster care may behave differently in the centre due to the change in environment. Story
Meet Casper, an energetic young dog with a remarkable story of resilience! Found as a stray, Casper was severely underweight, and you could see nearly every bone in his body. Since entering care, he's gained plenty of weight and muscle and is now ready for his forever home.~ Casper is extremely high-energy and would thrive in a very active home, ideally with experience in working breeds. He's the perfect candidate for a job or agility training to keep his mind and body engaged. ~ However, Casper struggles with impulse control around food, likely due to his past. He eats very quickly and benefits from a slow feeder. ~ When it comes to treats, he can grab them hard from hands, so care is needed. He has also shown some resource guarding behaviours, so it's best he's fed separately from other animals or people, and food should always be traded, never taken directly from him.~ Due to his guarding and impulse control issues, we're looking for a home without young children, but Casper would do well with teenage kids who understand his boundaries. ~ He's still young and learning, so leash and basic obedience skills are new to him, but he's quick to pick things up! ~ With his separation anxiety, a house rather than an apartment is essential. Casper could also benefit from living with another high-energy dog who can help him learn the ropes.~ To help Casper succeed, he will need to be signed up for three in-person training sessions with a positive reinforcement trainer. He would do wonderfully in a group obedience class to improve his socialization skills. If you're ready for an adventurous, loving companion, Casper could be the perfect fit!Regularly Exhibited Behaviours Noticed:JumpyMouthyUnder-socializedHigh energyResource GuardingExplanation of Behaviours:~ Casper has resource guarding for food & high value items. He should always be fed separately from other animals & people. He can lack impulse control when taking treats and can take treats roughly.~ Casper is a high-energy dog who requires plenty of daily exercise, training, attention, and mental stimulation to thrive.~ He needs a lot of work on his manners and self-control, particularly with challenging behaviours such as jumping and mouthing.~ Casper is under-socialized and will need slow, positive socialization at a pace that makes him comfortable. This dog would benefit from:An active homeA family with all adults or teenaged childrenAmple time, attention, and trainingProper socialization and desensitizationTraining needs/behaviours to work on:Basic manners (jumping up, mouthing, self-control)Basic trainingSocialization/desensitizationResource guarding of food & treatsImpulse controlFor more information on the behaviours listed, please check out our behaviour fact sheet: https://kwsphumane.ca/BehavioursandDefinitionsPlease note that animals coming from foster care may exhibit different behaviours when back in the shelter environment. If you are viewing this animal through 24Petconnect by PetPlace or Adopt-a-pet, please visit our website https://kwsphumane.ca/adopt/process to submit an application. ***BONDED PAIR - Bonded with Minnie. Will not be adopted separately, must go together!***Meet Freckle, a sweet senior tripod who is searching for her forever home with her beloved daughter, Minnie! ~ Freckle may only have three legs, but that doesn't stop her from enjoying life to the fullest. This gentle girl has had a tough start, being abandoned with Minnie, and they've been inseparable ever since. ~ Freckle can be a little nervous when meeting new people, but with a little patience and a treat, she'll show you her loving side.~ Freckle and Minnie must be adopted together and would do best as the only dogs in a calm home. They could potentially live with another senior dog after a slow introduction, but they do need space, so an apartment wouldn't be the best fit as they can be fairly vocal.~ Freckle and Minnie can be reactive to new dogs at first, so a home without shared walls would help them feel more comfortable. ~ These lovely ladies would thrive with older, respectful children, preferably teenagers.Freckle's kind, gentle nature will win you over, and together with Minnie, they are ready to find a loving family to call their own. If you're looking to welcome two wonderful seniors into your life, Freckle and Minnie are waiting to be your loyal companions!Regularly Exhibited Behaviours Noticed:Under-SocializedJumpy / MouthyFearful / NervousExplanation of Behaviours:~ Freckle is an active dog with moderate to low energy but requires daily attention, training, exercise, and enrichment.~ She will need consistent work and training to address challenging behaviours such as mouthing and jumping.~ Freckle can be shy and nervous at first, requiring her new family to introduce her slowly to new people, situations, and environments.~ She has shown reactivity to new dogs & new people due to fear or discomfort, particularly when in her kennel, on leash, or behind barriers.~ Freckle has some sound sensitivity and can be touch sensitive, especially with unfamiliar individuals. Story
Hunter is one of the most loving dogs ever. Sadly with myself being in the military and my girlfriend being in nursing school we just don't have the time for him that he deserves. I originally got him as a rescue when I thought I would have more time than I currently do. He is crate trained and his crate can be sent with him if you'd like as we won't have the need for it anymore. He is currently living with my girlfriend while I am away but we need for him to have a forever home by Christmas. He gets along with both of her retriever's and the family cats. He is good with children and loves my girlfriend's almost 4 year old nephew. Hunter is a dog that just wants love. He's always up to snuggle against you and be close to you. He went camping with us in the summer and is good in the car. He does have the occasional accident when getting out of the crate but is usually pretty good. He can swim and loves going near the water. Hunter is down for the adventure or to cuddle up with you.
