Story
Jagger is an 8 year old border collie / husky cross. He is 60 lbs of short creamy white fur with a striking dappled red nose & ears. He has a truly goofy grin when he’s happy and his expressive toffee brown eyes make it hard to stay mad at him for any length of time. He is house trained and absolutely adores his crate. He often puts himself to bed in it if if his people are up past his bedtime. He also likes to nap on the couch. Jagger loves playtime, his absolute favourite toy is his tug rope. He’ll amaze you at how fast plush toys can be taken apart. However, he is very gentle with his rubber toys. He tends to get bored, so rotating his toys is a good idea. Outside he plays with a large rubber ball but has the typical husky attitude after a few throws of “if you lose it again it’s not my problem “. Jagger has never truly played with a Frisbee, but given the space would astound you at how high he can jump. He is very smart and learns quickly. He’s food motivated and knows sit, down, wait, look at me, with me, turn, and of course high five. Jagger leans more towards his husky side. He walks well on his gentle leader but still has a tendency to pull when distracted. He likes nothing better than to see new places, he occasionally gets car sick but this is solved by timing his meals accordingly. Jagger is fascinated by water but doesn’t want to be in it, he will avoid puddles at all costs and take you home if it starts to rain on a walk. He loves being around it and will bring you right to the water’s edge, just don’t try to make him go in. Jagger is dog reactive, and will bark and lunge when he sees other dogs. This is behaviour can lead to him redirecting on whoever is near. When unable to escape he does have some leash aggression, interpreting any movement towards him as a threat. He has been making great strides towards correcting this, and rarely reacts to neighboring dogs. He would benefit greatly from a course specializing in reactive dogs. Jagger is an absolute sweetheart. He’s a cuddly fun boy that would do well in a dog savvy home with a well fenced yard with people willing to provide the training that the high energy and northern breeds need. He needs a quiet adult home with no other pets and experienced owners. Jagger is available for adoption together through Grand River All Breed rescue. The adoption donation is $400. All of our dogs are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated as part of their adoption. If you’d like to adopt, please fill out an application. Story
Hello! My name is Daisy and I am a super sweet and affectionate girl to the people I know really well. I came to the shelter back in July of 2024 and have been patiently waiting for my fur-ever home.I may need some time to come out of my shell when it comes to meeting new people but let me tell you, I am very food motivated and may be able to be persuaded into saying hello. It only takes me a couple of times meeting someone new for me to realize just how much I love them. I usually lean right into them and beg for as many scratches and pets as possible. My favourite is when my people give me lots of booty scratches, I tend to wiggle back and fourth when this is happening. When I`m really happy with someone you will be able to tell really quickly because I will roll over and ask for some much needed belly rubs. Some of the staff here decided that I needed a little get away and have been taking me on short little adventures out of the shelter. They say I am really good getting in the car and going for rides. The staff don`t allow me to have the windows down all the way because they think I might try to jump out of the car, I haven`t so far but sometimes when I see another dog the thought does cross my mind. When I am in the car they allow the windows down a crack and I love to sniff the air and take in all the new scents. Since being here at the shelter the staff have introduced me to a couple of dogs and I love to play with them! I had one really good puppy friend here and we loved to run around the yard together and share our toys. The staff say I can be a little sassy when it comes to playing with another dog and that I would do best with a dog that can handle me when I`m sassy and give me some space until I`m ready to zoom around again. My favourite game in the entire world is Soccer! I love to chase the ball around but I sometimes cheat as I will pick it up and run with it so the staff don`t get their turn. I could play this all day for hours if I was allowed to. I really hope my new family likes to play soccer with me, that would really be the best thing ever! I`m hoping to find my fur-ever home soon so I can cuddle on the couch and smother them with lots of kisses.**Daisy has a discounted adoption fee to help find her furrever home! Story
Hello! My name is Snoop and I am an energetic boy that loves to play with other dogs and all the stuffies in the world. I have been at the shelter since October of 2024 and have been patiently waiting to find my forever people. My favourite past time is zooming around the fenced in area here at the shelter with all my stuffed toys. I love to toss them in the air and catch them again mid run. I also love playing fetch with the staff here. They say I am really fast and will run really far just to chase the ball. I`ve become really talented and show off my cues before the staff throw the ball. I will sit, and lay down before the ball is thrown, I think they just like to keep me on my toes. I could play fetch all day if they let me but they keep telling me I`m getting tired, yet I still don`t believe them.Since being at the shelter I have made a couple doggie friends and I`m always so excited when I see other dogs. I am a bit of a wrestler and would love to find a friend that would be able to match my energy when it comes to playing. I mean I wouldn`t mind sharing too many of my toys with another dog as long as we also got lots of time to wrestle together first. I am still working on my manners. I haven`t quite figured out that when I pull on a leash because I`m so excited, the staff can only walk so fast with the two legs they have. I have been told I`m also a jumping jelly bean but you can`t blame a guy for trying to give lots of cheek kisses. I am hoping to find a family that loves to do training as I usually pick new tricks up fairly quickly because the treatos are just so yummy! If there is a family out there that loves adventure and needs a bit of extra fun in their lives, I am definitely the man for them. I would love my family so much and curl up right next to them for snuggles after a good day of play.**Snoop has a discounted adoption fee to help him find a furrever home! Hello! My name is Toph and I am looking to find my perfect adventure buddy. I have been at the shelter since October of 2024 and have been patiently waiting for my people. When I first came to the shelter the staff say I was a little girl but I had a lot of spunk. They think I got most of the personality out of all my siblings. I love to run and play and will often bounce like a deer at times. I still need to work on not jumping up on new people but sometimes I just get so excited to say HELLO! New people always give me lots of pets as well as lots of treatos. My favourite thing to do when I`m out and about is go for a good trail walk. I have been told I walk really well on leash although I am still working on my manners. I love sniffing all the trees and tracks I come across, Its so interesting to find out who was there before me. My absolute favourite part of the trail is getting to meet new people. They always smell so good and give me the best scratches. I do need to work on how much I jump up because I`m starting to realize that I get more pets when I`m not a jumping jellybean. I can`t wait to find my perfect family that I can run and play with all day if they let me. I also wouldn`t mind curling up under the blankets with you after a long day to get some much needed snuggles. I`m just praying that my new family carries lots of delicious treatos too.~ Toph is looking for an active home where she can go on lots of adventures and get all her puppy energy out~ Toph would love to find a single person, couple or family with older children to call her own~ While in our care we did note that Toph can be reactive to people and other dogs at time causing her to be vocal~ She would do best in a house type home rather than an apartment due to her being vocal~ She will need to be signed up for training prior to going home to ensure she works on her big girl mannersRegularly Exhibited Behaviours Noticed:- High Energy- Under-Socialized- Jumpy / Mouthy- Reactivity- Vocal- Nervous / Shy- Little to no trainingExplanation of Behaviours:- Toph is under-socialized; her new family will need to slowly and positively work on socializing her to the world around her.- Toph is a young and high-energy dog that will need plenty of daily exercise, enrichment and training to set her up for success.- Toph can be fearful/nervous of new people especially in new situations/environment

Story
Meet Maria, a spirited and loving large mix breed dog with a zest for life! Maria is full of energy and adores long walks, cuddling up, or playing at the park. ~ She`s a strong puller on the leash and can be quite vocal, so she’ll need an adopter who can keep up with her and work on her manners.~ Though Maria lacks basic obedience skills, she’s eager to learn and would thrive with someone committed to helping her become the best girl she can be. To set her up for success, Maria will need to be enrolled in one in-person positive reinforcement training class or receive a Goodpup scholarship.~ Maria came to us as a stray with a severe ear infection that caused her ears to drop. While the infection has been treated, she remains a bit touch-sensitive, so a gentle approach is key. Due to her vocal nature, Maria wouldn’t be the best fit for an apartment or shared-wall dwelling.~ She would do best in a home with older, dog-savvy children who understand how to respect her space. If you’re looking for a loyal and lively companion who’s ready to take on the world with you, Maria is your girl!Regularly Exhibited Behaviours Noticed:- High Energy- Nervous/Shy- Touch Sensitivity- Barrier Reactivity - Vocal- Separation anxietyExplanation of Behaviours:- Maria is an active and high energy dog, her new family will need to provide her plenty of daily exercise, enrichment and training.- Maria can be touch sensitive specifically with new people or when she is anxious/stressed. Her new family will need to slowly work on creating positive associations to touch.- Maria has shown to be barrier reactive at times which results in her being vocal towards whatever is triggering her. This dog would benefit from:- Active but quieter home- Older dog savvy children- Lots of training and socialization- Lots of time and attention- No ApartmentsTraining needs/behaviours that need to be worked with for this dog:- Basic training- Basic manner (jumping up, pushy interactions and pulling on leash)- Socialization- Sensitivity to touch and new things- Barrier Reactivity**For more information on any behaviours stated above, please check out our behaviour fact sheet: https://kwsphumane.ca/BehavioursandDefinitions**Please remember that animals are coming back from foster care to the centres for their meet and greets. Story
Meet Casper, an energetic young dog with a remarkable story of resilience! Found as a stray, Casper was severely underweight, and you could see nearly every bone in his body. Since entering care, he’s gained plenty of weight and muscle and is now ready for his forever home.~ Casper is extremely high-energy and would thrive in a very active home, ideally with experience in working breeds. He’s the perfect candidate for a job or agility training to keep his mind and body engaged. ~ However, Casper struggles with impulse control around food, likely due to his past. He eats very quickly and benefits from a slow feeder. ~ When it comes to treats, he can grab them hard from hands, so care is needed. He has also shown some resource guarding behaviours, so it’s best he’s fed separately from other animals or people, and food should always be traded, never taken directly from him.~ Due to his guarding and impulse control issues, we’re looking for a home without young children, but Casper would do well with teenage kids who understand his boundaries. ~ He’s still young and learning, so leash and basic obedience skills are new to him, but he’s quick to pick things up! ~ With his separation anxiety, a house rather than an apartment is essential. Casper could also benefit from living with another high-energy dog who can help him learn the ropes.~ To help Casper succeed, he will need to be signed up for three in-person training sessions with a positive reinforcement trainer. He would do wonderfully in a group obedience class to improve his socialization skills. If you’re ready for an adventurous, loving companion, Casper could be the perfect fit!Regularly Exhibited Behaviours Noticed:JumpyMouthyUnder-socializedHigh energyResource GuardingExplanation of Behaviours:~ Casper has resource guarding for food & high value items. He should always be fed separately from other animals & people. He can lack impulse control when taking treats and can take treats roughly.~ Casper is a high-energy dog who requires plenty of daily exercise, training, attention, and mental stimulation to thrive.~ He needs a lot of work on his manners and self-control, particularly with challenging behaviours such as jumping and mouthing.~ Casper is under-socialized and will need slow, positive socialization at a pace that makes him comfortable. This dog would benefit from:An active homeA family wit
