Story
Meet Pippen-Yorkshire Terrier mix male/neutered Pippen is an approx 8 yrs young (actual age unknown) Yorkshire Terrier mix who joined our rescue from a very caring but extremely overcrowded shelter He is a wee boy weighing just 7lbs Pippen loves people! He is always happy to meet new people anywhere. He is a curious guy, has a big heart, loves people and LOVES his treats. He's easy going for the most part, he just wants to be the star pet in someone's life. Eager to please his human family, and spend lots of time with them. Pippen is an easy going guy - he adapts well, but likes to have you involved in his routines. He wants you to be near him when he eats (same room), always go outside with him for potty breaks (with a treat given when he comes in after business is done) Pippen needs someone who is home often, and includes him during cuddles on the couch. Your foster dog's energy level: Low Although Pippen has a heart condition, he enjoys short walks, and following humans around the house to see what everyone is doing. He loves his naps and treats. He is a smart boy and picks up on habits quickly. Is your foster dog food motivated? Yes, while sometimes he gets distracted at meal time, he loves his treats. Pippen generally gets along with other dogs outside of the home, but he is showing some resource guarding (against other dogs only - not other humans) around his chosen favourite human and his food/treats. Knowing this information, We've been able to predict and avoid adding more stress to Pippen. Mandatory pet free home for Pippen in his forever home Any guarding behaviours -Yes, Pippen shows guarding with his favourite chosen human and food/treats ONLY against other dogs. Example if I am sitting on the floor and my dog comes over to me, Pippen may raise his lip and try to get between us. Also with food/treats he needs his own space. This is managed by separating him and my dog when food is involved, even one on the left, one on the right for treats is acceptable for him in my household. Housetrained? Yes Crate trained? No Pippen becomes extremely stressed in a crate. He has access to the main part of the house when we are not home and is not at all destructive/can be trusted loose in the home provided it's a safe environment of course I leave my foster dog alone for ___h per day. 4 Does your foster dog show signs of separation anxiety? Yes Pippen has separation anxiety and is on medication for this. His main stressor is when his main person leaves. He does cry/bark, will pace and sometimes pants. His separation anxiety has improved over time, him becoming more familiar with his routine and the medication. While this will still need to be worked on (ie: leaving the house on a regular basis, positive reinforcement, etc) but it has eased and he doesn't becoming extremely stressed as he did when he first arrived after being found as a stray. Now he typically only cries and barks for a few minutes. When you are home he is typically close by, on the same floor as you but since starting medication he is becoming less "velcro" in his foster home. He used to always be in the same room - the medication has really helped him. Please elaborate on your foster dog's leash skills. Pippen walks like he's on a mission! He is respectful on the leash, doesn't pull much at all, will stop and sniff when he needs to do his business or catches a scent. He likes to 'stop and smell the roses' occasionally, which he's earned! Handling: I don't believe Pippen had much affection from humans prior to coming into rescue sadly. If you move too fast he may freeze or finch, but quickly realizes you mean no harm and LOVES pets/affection anywhere. He also LOVES when visitors come over. More people to give him love and affection! He doesn't have any sensitive areas. I don't think Pippen had much structure previously in regards to bathroom habits, but he's improved greatly. He rarely has accidents in the house, and when he does it's because we've missed his cue to go out. He knows to sit at our back door when he needs a potty break now! His separation anxiety will likely be a life-long work in progress, but he's already improved so much. Pippen settling in his furever home will help give him a sense of stability and be beneficial to continue to manage his stress and heart health. Medical concerns? Pippen has a heart condition Pippen saw the cardiology specialist at OVC for a diagnostic echocardiogram : Myxomatous mitral valve disease stage ACVIM B1 There is no evidence of atrial or ventricular enlargement, and no systolic dysfunction, which is good! No medication is indicated at this stage Assessment Today's echocardiogram revealed evidence of myxomatous degenerative mitral and tricuspid valve disease, stage ACVIM B1. A recheck with the cardiology service is recommended in 1 year to assess the progression of the disease. Based on today's finding, there are no major concerns regarding general anesthesia for Pippen This is a degenerative condition but it is the early stages and the specialist stated that it's impossible to guess when things will progressively worsen, he may remain stable for many years before he develops congestive heart failure, at which time medication of course will be needed. His anxiety is a work in progress, but he is improving with the help of his Fluoxetine medication which he will need to remain on He also has early arthritis in his right hind leg and is taking joint supplements Daily he gets probiotic, baie run omega 3 oil, kidney tone, and pawtanical cbd oil, and his anxiety medication. Transportation-any motion sickness or anxiety in vehicles? His anxiety does heighten in the car, he typically cries for the first 10 minutes of the ride, but this has dramatically improved in the last few months. He is comfortable travelling in a travel crate that keeps his small 7lb body safe. Please describe the perfect adoptive home for your foster dog based on what you have experienced. Pippen needs a dog free home, with at least one person home often. He is slowly learning he won't be abandoned again, and naturally it's taking some time. He needs a home that will be patient and kind with him and continue to provide the care he needs to keep him healthy. He has SO much love to give, and loves every human he's met so far. Pippen has enjoyed venturing out and meeting new people-he loves attention Anything to add? Pippen may have a heart condition, don't let that fool you - he's doing amazing! He still loves to play (independently) and follows me all over the house no problem. He also loves his walks! He's a love bug and has so much love to give! Pippen's adoption fee is reduced due to his heart condition. Please understand that we have invested over $8,000 in his vetting during his time with our rescue due to needing multiple specialized dental surgeries (all completed and healed now) and his mere $450 adoption fee is moderate in comparison. All dogs are placed in loving foster homes during their time with us, we do not have a shelter to visit. We do not allow applicants to meet dogs until pre-approved for adoptions since they are living in private family homes. Please note that only those whom we feel are an ideal match will be contacted to move to the next steps of our application screening process *Must be located within Ontario Canada *Inground/ground level Pools and deeper ponds must be separately fenced from yard Hobo Haven is located in St Jacobs Ontario. For approved families, we require in person meetings in St Jacobs ON Adoptions within Ontario only Please use this link to submit an application https://hobohavenrescue.ca/dog-adoption-application Adoption fee includes neuter, dental, microchip, bloodwork, vaccinations, deworming, flea/tick/heartworm prevention, and all vet care, food and supplies during their time with us. Pippen's vetting has exceeded $8000 during his time with us for cardiac diagnostics and multiple dentals needed in addition to his regular vetting. We require all serious applicants to watched "Petfooled" which is a free documentary at this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XC1rUWWnxI , or on Amazon prime or also a variety of other free video sites. Our motto is "know better/do better" and we ask all adoptive families to be as committed to providing our dogs with quality nutrition as they are to providing love. Story
Meet Flossi: Bichon Frise female, spayed, 7yrs young Introducing Flossi! She is a precious, shy 7yrs young Bichon Frise female who was surrendered to our rescue by a commercial breeder when they retired her from their breeding program Current weight 13lbs, Flossi is a wee girl who is still learning that humans can be kind and safe and provide TLC and patience, after her previous life was certainly not kind to her. View more photos and videos in her album here https://tinyurl.com/Flossi-album Flossi is still cautiously exploring her world and slowing blossoming to learn to trust people and be more brave in new environments. She requires a patient, calm family whom will allow her to come to you as her confidence grows, and to work with her socialization with love and kindness. MANDATORY for her new forever home *Fully fenced yard/full supervision in person during outside time. Flossi is too timid to walk on leash yet She cannot be put out on a tie out nor live in a home with a dog door or unfenced pool. * Mandatory to have another gentle dog in her new home to help her confidence and companionship needs Flossi is being fostered with two other small breed dogs and two cats, she is fine with them but she would not appreciate a dog who is in her face or pawing at her etc. * Flossi requires a home without children due to her timid nature *Due to her breed life expectancy of up to 16yrs, she is not a suitable match for older seniors. Our goal for every dog is to be able to live a full life in their forever home without ever having to be rehomed. Flossi has now been spayed, microchipped, had her bloodwork done, negative for heartworm and all tick diseases, and up to date on her vaccinations. Flea/tick prevention and fecal tested negative for parasites Flossi has also completed her dental cleaning and removal of any decayed teeth Notes from Flossi's foster: Energy level: low to moderate She always wakes up between 7:30 and 7:45 every day. We get up , she goes into the Livingroom – pee pads are here. While we make every effort to housetrain the dogs in our care, Flossi is still learning and due to her timid nature, she has pee pads as an option to help direct her to appropriate areas until she is able to be harnessed for outside potty breaks throughout each day. Has breakfast, small nap or runs around, we go outside weather permitting, treats, afternoon is a game lick pad, puzzle, out a few more times always with harness and leash, supper, outside again then bed, She sleeps through the night Is your foster dog food motivated? very She has been very good with my 2 dogs and 2 cats from the start How does your foster dog respond to meeting new people in their home environment and outside of the home? She gets spooked and hides but then peeks around the corner and comes part way to check them out. Good with cats? very Any guarding behaviours -none but she tends to try to steal treats from the other 2. They let her Housetrained? No Crate trained? Yes-will tolerate sleeping in it but wants out by 7 am. Barks and howls if she isn’t let out Flossi does much better being alone if she has the other dogs for companionship. If the dogs and I are not there she barks after about 2 min. No problems if I am out and she has the dogs for company. She is fine being left uncrated while I am gone, using baby gates to limit access to just the living and diningrooms. Flossi cannot do stairs yet. Leash skills: Flossi is not yet confident enough for walks. When we go out to the patio, she is harnessed and leashed but more focused on keeping away from me She cannot be let out into the yard without harness/leash as you would not be able to catch her to bring her back inside How does she respond to handling/grooming: Once I coral her and pick her up there is no issue touching petting etc, she gets spooked if you try otherwise. This is getting better slightly easier to be able to pick her up as she learns to feel safer. Current personality/temperament Laid back, calm but always ready to react to movement by avoidance I believe she has the potential to be a loving cuddle bug with the right family who will be patient and earn her trust. Flossi is currently being treated for an ear infection which is improving with daily cleaning and medicated treatments. Potty habits: on pee pads most of the time She doesn’t respond to commands yet but will come if you call her and hold your hand out with a treat. Please describe current routines and preferences that will help the dog settle into their new home: Right now, she is too fearful for training and moving to a permanent home could cause more anxiety. She requires a family whom is experienced with timid dogs and allows her to come around on her own time Strengths/areas they have improved on: confidence in voicing her wants - lets me know meals are late Transportation-any motion sickness or anxiety in vehicles? Flossi is a very good traveller crated All dogs are placed in loving foster homes during their time with us, we do not have a shelter to visit. We do not allow applicants to meet dogs until pre-approved for adoptions since they are living in private family homes. Story
Introducing Siris! Siris’s name inspiration (pronounced: sigh-ris) -the Egyptian god of the underworld Quite fitting for his "rebirth" into rescue for a second chance! Sirus is a super sweet male that is very much a lean, smaller than his photos look at only 26kg, brindle Boxer body style with possibly American Bulldog sprinkled in, who came to us from an overcrowded shelter. PLEASE READ HIS FULL PROFILE before inquiring to ensure he is the right fit for your family and that you're his pawfect match. Siris is the goodest good boy! We all adore him so much. Goofy and snuggly and so eager to learn and please. Siris loves to work with his foster family and has learned so very quickly, he will thrive in an active family with ongoing training, loves hiking and is a young active boy who also loves to snuggle with his people. Notes from his foster family Your foster dog's energy level: Medium to High Siris needs a few good walk/hikes/sniffing adventures a day He does have a good amount of energy where we've found playing with him in the backyard is really helpful. He loves to run and play tug and it really helps with his energy levels. Multiple walks a day could also help with this. We train Siris each night with various commands as well as throughout the day we work on his recall. While on walks we also spend some time teaching heel, leave it and leash training. Is your foster dog food motivated? Siris is extremely food motivated. If you have treats, he'll do anything you want so we always bring treats on walks. Siris is great meeting new dogs, he's very friendly and listens to other dogs social cues well. Siris came to us very emaciated and as a result, does resource guard food and toys (with other animals only! He has no guarding issues with humans) so he will require a home without other pets living with him to set him up for success. He'd love social backyard visits with friend or family dogs since he does well away from any resources he feels he needs to guard. Siris is wonderful with people, he loves everyone and loves getting attention from humans. He is such a sweet and loving dog. Good with cats? Siris would do best in a home without cats. He's not aggressive towards our cats, he's just overly excited to meet them and doesn't know how to control his excitement around them and of course cats don't understand resource guarding respect around food etc. We are seeing improvement with time, training and routine feedings. We are managing it currently by keeping Siris separated from our pets when any food is being prepared, during feedings and when giving treats. When Siris is spending time with our other dogs, we don't allow any toys in the area although with concentrated training and careful supervision this is also improving as you'll notice in photos in his profile. Housetrained? Yes Crate trained? Yes He loves his crate and it's his safe space, he will often nap there during the day and is happy to sleep there overnight. He also knows the command "crate" well. Does your foster dog show signs of separation anxiety? No Please elaborate on your foster dog's leash skills. Siris does an excellent heel when asked and when treats are available. He responds well to being called back to you. Although he needs more training with pulling, as he does like to pull sometimes when not in a heel position. How does your foster dog react when you touch the ears, tail, paws etc. Please elaborate. He has no problem with being touched or examined anywhere. He doesn't mind his paws touched at all. How would you describe the dog's personality/temperament He is the biggest sweetheart you'll ever meet. He is so sweet and loving and just wants to please, cuddle and spend time with you. He loves to play and can be a goofy boy. Things needing improvement specifics please He needs improvement learning to not pull on walks, managing his excitement as he sometimes mouths (we are working on redirecting him to toys) as well as jumping, and his resource guarding needs work. No medical concerns,he is an extremely healthy dog now that he is being fed high quality food and supplements. Food amount/type: He's eating Bold By Nature raw and eating 6 patties per day. Raw is not mandatory for his adoptive family but we will require his adoptive family to feed a high quality, meat based grain free diet to maintain optimal health for Siris if they choose not to feed raw. Skills/Commands Sit? Yes Stay? Yes Wait? Yes Lay Down? Yes Leave It? Working on it Off? Working on it Down? Yes Come? Yes Any other skills/commands? He also knows "crate" and "paw" and we use "break" as his release word. We are in the middle of teaching "leave it" but he needs work on this. Please describe current routines and preferences that will help the dog settle into their new home: He would likely adjust quickly to any home. What would really help is making sure he gets a good amount of exercise and has plenty of toys and chews such as bully sticks, tendons, knuckle bones etc and appropriate toys as he really likes to chew. As well as he really enjoys spending quality time with his humans. Strengths/areas they have improved on: He's really improved on managing his excitement quite a bit. He is VERY easy to train and has improved on learning "leave it". He has also improved a lot on being able to disconnect from the cats. He's also improved on listening to other dogs cues. He has also improved on his resource guarding. Transportation-any motion sickness or anxiety in vehicles? None. Please describe the perfect adoptive home for your foster dog based on what you have experienced. The perfect adoptive home would be a single pet household with humans that can provide lots of quality time and exercise with this sweet boy and understand the importance of continued training and socialization to reinforce positive behaviours. The perfect home would also really enjoy cuddling with Siris, he's a big cuddler. Anything to add? Siris is truly a golden goose egg of a dog. Any home who takes him in would be adopting a smart, loving, goofy, and snuggly lifelong companion. He's the biggest sweetheart and really deserves a loving home as he has so much love to give. Important Notes: Siris requires a pet free home Siris is a bouncy young goofy boy who is not a suitable fit for younger children or older seniors. All dogs are placed in loving foster homes during their time with us, we do not have a shelter to visit. We do not allow applicants to meet dogs until pre-approved for adoptions since they are living in private family homes. Story
Meet Dheera: 2 yr female Bernese Mountain Dog Meet darling Dheera! She is a female, spayed Bernese Mountain Dog, approx. 2yrs Dheera joined us from a rural pound after being found stray, severely emaciated and with frost bitten ears. She is now thriving in her foster home with high quality frequent meals, TLC and couch snuggles which are her favourite. Dheera’s adoption fee includes spay, microchip, dental cleaning and extractions if needed, bloodwork, vaccinations, deworming, flea/tick/heartworm prevention, and all vet care, food and supplies during their time with us. She would love a family who has large breed experience with a large fenced yard for playing supervised. She is not a farm dog, Dheera lives indoors and requires a home committed to keeping her safe at all times after her horrible history fending for herself as a stray in bitter cold weather. She is not a suitable fit for attached housing as she does bark a bit when her foster family leaves her alone, though she does settle. Having a canine companion in her forever home would be ideal for Dheera's confidence and happiness. PLEASE READ HER ADOPTION PROFILE BEFORE APPLYING to be sure that your family is the right match for Dheera’s needs in her ideal forever home. An adoption application must be submitted in order to be considered. Please DO NOT use the introduce yourself option, this is not an application. Notes: * Mandatory registration with an approved trainer is a requirement *Due to her young age and size, she is not a suitable match for older seniors. Our goal for every dog is to be able to live a full life in their forever home without ever having to be rehomed *NO young children due to her size - she is still learning how to not push people over with excitement. She has learned not to jump on people while they are standing but loves to dive onto her fosters while they are sitting on the couch *Inground/ground level Pools and deeper ponds must be separately fenced from yard Hobo Haven is located in St Jacobs ON. For approved families, we require in person meetings in St Jacobs ON Adoptions within Ontario only Notes from her foster family: Your foster dog's energy level: Medium Dheera plays with her foster sister in our fenced in yard, and has multiple 20-40 minute walks daily Is your foster dog food motivated? Yes, she is learning not to counter surf which has greatly improved now that she is being fed properly. Dheera arrived into our care severely emaciated but is now thriving. Good with dogs - Friendly with her foster sister who is a large breed St Bernard. Dheera is more nervous with small dogs and due to her prey drive with cats, we are recommending a home with another large breed friendly dog or a dog free home would also be fine. How does your foster dog respond to meeting new people in their home environment and outside of the home? Nervous at first, but warms up quickly Good with cats? NO, Dheera must be in a home without cats or other small animals Any guarding behaviours noted incl guarding food/treats, people or furniture/valued spaces? If so, how is it managed? Mild resource guarding of her own food bowl with other pets, but she shares treats and toys no problem. She eats alone in her crate. Housetrained? Yes Crate trained? No She goes in to eat, but once she is done she starts pawing and barking at the crate. She is fine left outside of her crate in the home and does not require crating. I leave my foster dog alone for ___h per day. 4 Does your foster dog show signs of separation anxiety? No Please elaborate on your foster dog's leash skills. Dheera is working on her leash training, gets nervous walking near moving cars. Pulls and stops to smell a lot, but not unmanageable. Walked on harness. She is easily distracted, but still cowers when cars drive by too close. She walks way better with another dog along for confidence. She is interested in other dogs and pulls to smell but does not lunge Dheera is starting obedience classes as soon as she has healed from her spay surgery. Dheera is great with grooming, vet appts and all physical touching including nail trims are fine. How would you describe the dog's personality/temperament Shy, sweet, loving, happy She will need a patient family who will help her gain confidence, socialization and continuing with her training. Things needing improvement Leash walking, voice commands Housetrained now and will sit for a treat when coming inside from going potty Dheera is a good travelling companion, she is extremely calm in cars She is blossoming in her foster home and ready to find her own forever family.
