Story
Barks and Meows Rescue introduces Amelia. She is a 6-year-old Pointer with a coat as soft as Velour. Amelia weighs about 50lbs and was found as a stray. Amelia is such a nice gal. She is so typical of her breed. She prances when she runs to greet you in the house. She loves her foster family and has learned to trust them through food. This Angel is always happy, tail wagging the entire time anyone talks to her. Amelia loves her food and would eat until she exploded if you let her. Her food is carefully measured out and she eats it all right away. Amelia doesn't have a sensitive stomach so can handle various types of food brands. She arrived at our Rescue and was very timid. She is has learned to trust more so now because of treats but still is a bit nervous. Amelia has a very gentle nature and though sometimes can be timid, she is not fear aggressive. We were so pleased to see her pointing tendencies when we took her to the conservation park for her photos. She was truly in her element. Amelia enjoys the company of other dogs. She is great with both males and females. When she gets really excited she will initiate a bit of play but a Companion Dog would suit her just fine. Amelia is not a high-energy dog but does require one good run a day as well as a walk. A minimum of one hour of exercise each day will suffice. She would only be able to be in a fenced-in area as she would be gone after birds if off-leash. This breed should be enrolled in obedience training and it is helpful that they are so food motivated. We do not know her history and have no idea if she was used as a hunting dog so her training has been minimal. She is housebroken and paper trained. Amelia does not require a crate, though she eats in one due to the other dogs in the home. This breed is a wonderful family dog, loyal and loving. Due to their strength and very hard wagging tails, toddlers are not recommended. She tolerates the warmer weather better than the cold. She will need a coat during the Fall and Winter months. Her hair coat is short. Amelia is great with strangers, again typical of her breed. She does have a prey drive and is very intelligent. She is a quiet dog in her foster home. She is very alert and were notify her family if anything happens out of the ordinary. Pointers also make great running companions for runners and cyclists. They are naturals at dog sports such as field trials, obedience, and agility. She rides well in a vehicle. The ideal home for Amelia is one that has a family willing to participate in training, obedience classes with her. A family that is keen on taking her for a good run each day and hikes would benefit her disposition. A smaller family unit would suit her well. Another resident dog we believe is a necessity for Amelia as we think she may suffer separation anxiety without one. Amelia is spayed, up to date with vaccines, treated for Heartworm in July, and is now heartworm free, and was on Heartworm Flea Prevention throughout the season. A fully fenced yard, another socialized resident dog, and a Veterinarian History of Compliance are mandatory to apply for Amelia.

Story
Barks and Meows Rescue introduces Leia. Leia is a Catahoula Leopard Dog mix weighing 28 kgs. She has a medium hair coat and is 2 years old. Leia was an owner surrender. Leia is a very sweet girl. She came from a family with 3 very young children and no other dog in the home. The family spent thousands of dollars on her trying to determine the cause of her diarrhea. She definitely has a protein allergy and what we discovered once she entered our Rescue is that she loves other dogs, and enjoys not having children around. Her previous home was just not the right fit for her. They loved her so much but were very worried that her diarrhea was not giving her the quality of life she should have. She has been kept on the Purina Veterinarian HP Vegetarian Food with other proteins allowed in her diet. She is no longer on the anxiety meds she was on previously and her stools are always solid. She now is able to retain all the nutrients in her food and has gained 5lbs.   Her previous family did a wonderful job taking her to training and she knows all her basic commands. She takes vegetarian treats gently from your hands and eats 5 cups of food a day. Leia was very good with the children in the home but we believe the dynamic was just too busy for her. She is housebroken and sleeps either on a doggy bed or the couch at night time. She does very well with all dogs and enjoys playing with them and their companionship. Typical of the Catahoula breed, Leia has one eye that is half blue and half brown. She is now at her ideal weight and is quite tall as she has long legs. She is a gentle gal who loves hugs and giving gentle kisses. Leia has a very high prey drive. She could never be off-leash in an unfenced area due to her prey drive. She does pull on a lead due to her prey drive so she will require more work on walking with a lead and body harness. She rides in the car not badly but wants to be close to the family in the front if no one is in the back with her. The ideal home for Leia is a quiet one with another dog. The dog could be a companion or a playmate. If there are children in the home, it would be best if they were older so as not to stress her. Leia is spayed, up to date with vaccines, dewormed, 4dx tested negative. She requires to be kept on for life the Purina Veterinarian HP Vegetarian Diet with no other types of food allowed. A cat free home and another socialized resident canine, a fully fenced backyard, made of wood being a minimum of 6 feet high and a Veterinarian History of Compliance are mandatory to apply for our Leia.

Story
Barks and Meows Rescue introduces Belle. She is a Shepherd mix, full-grown, weighing 42lbs, and is 20 months old. She has a medium-length hair coat and was found as a stray. Belle is a lovely dog. She is quiet in her foster home and is not destructive at all. She is crate trained though she doesn't require one. As she was found as a stray, she didn't appear to have much socialization. She is timid but it won't take long to warm up to a new family. Belle is very smart and listens well. She learned the routine of the foster home very quickly. She really does go with the flow of the home. She has a beautiful, gleaming, shiny hair coat. This darling enjoys all sorts of toys and doesn't do too badly on a leash and body harness. She is very quiet in the foster home where she has a couple of other dogs residing with her. Belle will make an excellent family dog. She loves children, though due to her shyness, we would recommend, children over the age of 10. She is dog selective so she would be happiest as the only dog in the home. We do not know if she likes cats so the home must be cat-free. Cuddles and tv on the couch are her favorite pastimes for her. Though she loves the outdoors, walking in parks, conservation areas, etc gives her great pleasure as she is not used to city traffic. Belle is a low-to-medium energy dog. Belle enjoys car rides and behaves very well in the vehicle. Belle is fed twice daily. She loves treats and they will work well for further training. Belle is housebroken. At night she sleeps in her crate with the door open. A doggie bed beside one of her family members would be perfect for her. She has some of the Shepherd traits and will be watchful of the family members and alert if danger. Continued socialization is critical for this breed mix. The ideal home for Belle is a home that's fairly quiet. A family that will take her to obedience training is crucial for this breed mix. Belle will make their family proud when she excels at all her training courses. A family that will include her in their activities is important as well. A structured schedule for her daily routine is important for this breed mix. Belle is spayed, up to date with vaccines, heartworm tested negative, and dewormed. A fully fenced backyard and a Veterinarian History of Compliance are mandatory to apply for our Belle.

Story
Barks and Meows Rescue introduces Gunner. He is a yellow labrador Retriever who was born in May 2021. He weighs 57lbs and has a medium-length hair coat. Gunner was transferred to our Rescue where the opportunity for adoption is much greater here.     Gunner is a very happy active boy. He requires stimulation as he is on the move a great deal of the day. He loves playing with other dogs, especially chasing. He is very fast and will try and herd the other dog/dogs he is playing with. Gunner is very social with children and people. He was in foster care at another rescue since he was 4 months old but never found the right family. Gunner is astute and has excellent recall. He would benefit and excel from obedience classes. He rides well in a vehicle and loves car rides. Gunner needs work and practice walking on a lead and body harness. He has a 1/4 acre, fully fenced area, to run on at his foster home so is not used to going for walks. He would do fine in a home with older children as the younger ones, he would bowl over accidentally when he gets playful. The ideal home for Gunner is one where the family includes him in their outdoor activities. He needs to be able to run a good hour or perhaps go on a good long hike when it's not hot out. He requires mental stimulation so leaving him home with some toys won't work for this boy at his age. He is still a big puppy but housebroken. Gunner is neutered, up to date with vaccines, 4dx tested negative, dewormed, and on heartworm/flea/tick prevention.   Thank you very much Melissa Caron Photography for these lovely photos you took.

Story
Barks and Meows Rescue introduces Oh Henry. He is one of 8 puppies born to Mommy Ellie on October 18. There are 5 girls and 3 boys in this litter. Ellie was rescued already Pregnant from a high-kill shelter. She had come in as a stray with a large pure black lab. We believe looking at these pups, that is who the father of the litter is. We believe this litter will reach 60 lbs plus when fully grown. They have thick, shiny coats. The entire litter has wonderful affectionate personalities. Currently, they are similar in all aspects. This entire litter is extremely affectionate and loves to be held and cuddled. They will be high-energy dogs based on their breed mixes. They have huge appetites and have been fed Royal Canin Medium Breed Puppy Food. They eat extremely fast, just like labs tend to do. They are fed every 4 hours during the day. They are a very busy breed mix and are currently stimulated with toys. They are paper trained and get warm quite easily. They give kisses but are very squiggly when trying to hold them. Oh Henry loves attention and is constantly wagging his tail for more kisses. He plays well with his siblings. They love the soft squeaky toys and are so excited when their foster family is in with them. They are not the greatest in the bath but are getting used to it. They are always on the go. Dynamics of owning a Labraheeler Labraheelers respond well to being trained, which is an advantage, especially for novice dog ownersLab and Cattle dog mix dogs make excellent companion pets for active individualsLabraheeler dogs are highly intelligent dogsMany Labraheelers make good watchdogs and will bark at strangers that approach your home.Labraheelers are loving and loyal toward their familyLabraheeler dogs are very active and need energetic owners who can spend hours outdoors exercising the pet.Labraheeler dogs are excellent exercise partners for people who enjoy outdoor sports and want a dog that would be able to walk long distances without easily getting tired. Labraheeler dog is the right dog for that job. Labrador Retrievers as well as Cattle dogs are tireless dogs that really enjoy and even need long walks every day to stay in good mental and physical shape. If you have the time that it takes to properly care for and exercise your dog every day - rain or shine - then Labraheeler may be the dog for you. Labraheelers need lots of space to thrive. Living in a city apartment is not ideal for these active dogs that need lots of outdoor exercises frequently which may not be possible in the cramped city environment. Even if you have a large park nearby but live in an apartment building then it would help to have neighbors with hearing problems, otherwise, you may get many complaints that your dog creates too much noise. Labraheelers are naturally vocal dogs that will bark and they will bark a lot, especially when not left alone or when they miss their long walk and have the energy that needs to be used in some way. Barking may be a solution for a Labraheeler to keep himself or herself busy for some time but for your neighbors, this may not be a pleasant experience. That is another reason why Labraheeler dogs are not recommended for people who live in a city apartment. This litter is currently very social and its adopters will need to continue to do so. Mommy Ellie is a very social cattle dog which is not the norm for her breed so that is a bonus for this litter genetically. Oh Henry had his first set of vaccines on Dec 13 including Bordetella. He was microchipped and weighed 6.2 kg. He is currently the largest in the litter. UPDATE: He had his 2nd set of vaccines including Lepto on Jan 23. He weighs 10.5 kg. UPDATE: He had his 3rd set of vaccines including Rabies on Feb 3. He weighed 15.3kg. A fully fenced yard or farm is mandatory to apply for Oh Henry. Preference will be given to those families who have another socialized dog in the home to keep him company and to teach him the dynamics of the home. As always, Barks and Meows Rescue will pay for the spays and neuters of this litter at 6 months of age at the West Lorne Animal Hospital.

Story
Willow was born Jan 4/22. She is a beautiful loving dog. She is a barker and very anxious as she needs to be socialized more. She is better with older children as the high energy level of younger children seems to make her more anxious. She lives with a miniature/toy poodle whom dominates her LOL. She would benefit from an experienced Shepherd owner. Willing to drive within reason to meet with you.
