Story
Hi there! My name is Major and I am an adorable little boy at just six months old. Some people say that my photographs make me look older than I am and bigger than I am but really I’m only 30 pounds  soaking wet!   I like being a puppy. One of the volunteers here loves to hold me and cuddle me and cradle me and I just melt in her arms when she does it. I am doing pretty good on my leash training and I really like engaging in my puppy dog lessons. I love people, and I love learning!  I also love my puppy and my dog friends. I’m really good at is wrestling and playing and chasing and romping. I love my play sessions with dog friends and human kids too! I absolutely adore babies and had a foster home with a sweet baby and I matched that sweet baby's happy and innocent energy. In foster care I was great around the kids and knew just how to behave. My foster family said I was the best puppy and that I learned so well and they loved having me. Now they went on vacation so I'm living at Desert Haven again until I get adopted. I hope I get adopted pretty soon! I'm really meant for a home and family and to be in the middle of everything. I will compliment a family perfectly! When people are around, I always want to snuggle right into their lap and fall asleep. I'll lay in someone's lap and keep myself busy chewing on a stick. Do you have one? A lap? A stick? I'll take both! When you come to visit me I’m going to nestle right into your lap and I will also show you how I am the Branch Manager of Dogtown at Desert Haven. Ha ha ha! Fortunately there's no shortage of sticks around here and there is most certainly no shortage of love in these parts. Swing by Desert Haven, I dare you not to fall in love with little ole me! Can’t wait!  Love you! Major    Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.October 28, 2024, 12:37 pm

Story
Hello there! You know what I think I'd like to be? A camping, travel, and hiking buddy. That'd be swell. I am so smart (not to brag but I am) and learn so quickly that I bet I'll have this off leash "with me" thing down pat in no time. I aim to please my people so being close by is important to me and what's closer than all of us inside a tent! And we'll have s'mores around the campfire and tell ghost stories. That sounds like a great life to me! Plus, I'm puppy perfection when I ride in the vehicle. I sit nice, watch out the window, and will have a grand time heading to places with my family. So, I'd be a good travel dog, camping pup, and hiking friend. What else? Hmmm I'm also a fabulous play partner for another dog while I live at Desert Haven so I'm sure I can transfer that to another dog in my new home. I like to play play play then sleep sleep sleep. Then when we wake up let's play some more! I'd also do great as an only dog as long as my family commits to giving me exercise and playtimes so I can burn my puppy energy in productive ways. Tug, chasing balls, walks, etc will do! I'm only 11 months old right now and full of excitement and eagerness. I have big energy and like to have firm boundaries from my people. I'm one of those real good boys who make their family super proud and listen very well when I know what I'm supposed to do. I don't get upset when you boss me; I don't want to be in charge I'm just a puppy! I like to be outside and I love water too! I could be a swimming dog! I could be a walking companion because I hold the distinction of being the dog at Desert Haven that pulls the least. Yep, that's right, I enjoy walking alongside my people. Then when the volunteer dog walkers sit down I often will sit right on the bench too for some petsies and some snuggles. I think what my family will enjoy about me the most is how much they love me, how often I make them smile, and how proud they will be of me. I am looking for a family that watches over me and guides me to be the best adult dog ever! And since I'm already 11 months old we better get started very soon! Is a goodest boy in your future? I'm here! It's me! Love, TwixVisit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.October 28, 2024, 12:37 pm

Meet Pookie! If interested contact Eunice via text or call at 406-291-3000. Pookie has a short, smooth black coat and very dark expressive eyes. He is more of a mini pit bull, with very short legs and will probably not get very big. His dad is a fawn colored Anerican pit bull, but his mom is a black Eurasian. He is 15 weeks old as of May 18. He is a fun loving guy who would love to jump in your lap if you let him or try to take a sip of your latte. He loves water! Story
Hello there, I'm Lacy! I have a couple questions to ask you. Have you been thinking about bringing a little pupper into your life? Dreaming of a sweet darling that loves to play with dogs? Hoping she is pint-sized? Interested in the Heeler variety of pup? Have the time to devote to helping a shy girl shine? If you answered YES to these questions, you are in for a real treat because I match perfectly with all those puppy hopes and dreams. Read on! Please allow me to expand on each of those parts of me. I'm a sweet and sensitive little girl with a penchant for play! I love playing with dogs and I am an active romper-arounder in play groups. I love sticks, toys, horsing around, zoomies, and just plain being with my pup and dog friends. Sunny afternoon siestas with my sisters-from-a-different-mister and brothers-from-another-mother are downright dreamy. Truth be told, I am utterly relaxed and happy with my dog buddies and, conversely, tentative around humans. I'm not sure if some mean person gave me a startle when I was littler or if being a little shy is just my temperament, but either way, at the moment this is who I am: Lacy, A Girl Who Makes You Work For Her Trust! So, if you require a puppy who eagerly wants to be scooped up into your arms the first day we meet, and looks up at you with googly oogly eyes filled with love -- ask the volunteers about Major. That's exactly who he is and I admire him for it! (Side note: Major is my roommate here at Desert Haven, so you can meet us both when you come for a visit!) But if you want a sweetheart of a puppy that will let you scoop her up and will be unsure about whether or not it is a good idea and will look up at you with "holy crap am I going to fall in love with you that scares the bejeebus out of me right now!" eyes -- let's keep this conversation going! Girls like me, that take their sweet time and that develop deep bonds over time, become dogs made of gold. Plus, I am only five months old now! I'm just a baby so I fit easily in your arms. The most important thing to know is that I am always sweet. When I feel unsure, I just try to keep some space between us when I first meet a new person. Hotdog bits, yummy treats, and lots of patience -- those are things to have in your back pocket when you come to meet me. So, to sum up, at the moment, I'm in need of a patient family that sees my sparkle. I have an adorable twinkle in my eye. I am very lovable and tender. I think it's super fun to learn from other dogs how to be the best puppy I can be! I am going to grow up to be something special! I feel my feelings lots. I'm growing in my confidence and the people caring for me here at Desert Haven tell me that they love watching me blossom. I'm like a pretty flower opening up before their eyes! Come see for yourself! Love, Lacy  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.October 28, 2024, 12:37 pm

Story
We are very excited to share our next Roxie update <3 If you are newer to following the happenings of our Desert Haven paws and claws crew you might not know our darling Roxie's history so we'll catch everyone up. We rescued Roxie as a feral, one-year-old dog back in December of 2022. She had spent her first year of life with her giant pack of ten litter-mates in a large backyard with breached fencing. The pack was fed once a day and that, we are sad to say, was the whole of the attention given to those pups. Greta visited the homeowner to try to help him with his overwhelm due to having an unsocialized pack of dogs. During the visit the pack circled her, acting quite menacingly. All but one, that is. One of the dogs stayed off to the side, didn't participate in the pack mentality, and seemed to be pleading, "Give me a chance". The homeowner had never tried to leash any of them, nor given them names. She was a nameless feral pup and we made her ours. We named her Roxie and she became a Desert Haven dog. It took the homeowner weeks to get a leash on her but when he did, Roxie took her first ride in a car to come live at Desert Haven. Once with us at Desert Haven, everything was new and scary for Roxie. The presence of people frightened her. It took us weeks of laying and sitting with her in her kennel and oodles of hotdog bits before one of our work campers (who is now our Director of Operations!) was finally able to get a leash on Roxie. It took several more weeks to help her cross a threshold of a gate. It took months before a second person gained Roxie's trust and could then get her leashed up for fun times around the Desert Haven grounds. Getting her to enter a vehicle was another months long process, the first trip to the vet, and so on and so on. Every single little thing your domesticated, socialized dog does normally and easily, had to be painstakingly taught to Roxie. All along the way Roxie was a willing, eager, albeit cautious participant in all her lessons in How to Be a Domesticated Dog. She loved it! Desert Haven Animal Rescue gave her a chance and she has never forgot that. She always does her best and is a joy to help. However, because Roxie's training was so time intensive, we decided that a foster home was the best place for her to continue her lessons. Since September, she's been fostered jointly by Greta and by CC our director of operations. A few of Roxie's accomplishments: *successful trips to the vet to get vaccinations and check ups *overcoming her fear of vehicles on the road while we take walks *becoming a running partner for Greta *being fully house-trained *enjoying trips in the car *being incredibly affectionate and loving belly rubs Roxie has always been a great playmate with dogs over 40 pounds. She's exuberant in her play and has needed a dog closer to her size as a playmate (Roxie is 60 pounds). We have been working to help her gain play skills with smaller dogs to expand her options for homes she can be adopted into. And now Roxie has made a tiny dog friend!! Pictured is Matilda (grey) with her brother Otis (black pointy ears) and her foster sister Roxie. They all play and romp together every day and Roxie is happier than a pig in slop. We are thrilled for Roxie that she is making new friends, continuing to learn new skills, and becoming the domesticated dog she dreamed of becoming. Roxie keeps unlocking new options for her future adoptive home. She is ready for it! Roxie saw her chance that day back in December of 2022, and by golly she took it!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.October 28, 2024, 12:37 pm

Story
This is Sunka. She is only ten months old now and she has been with her family since 6 weeks old. Her mom Carol loves Sunka but is rehoming her. Call or text Carol at 720–486–2858 to inquire about adopting gorgeous and sweet Sunka. She is spayed and up to date on shots. All information is provided by Carol.  Sunka is a playful and boisterous lab mix who loves to play with toys in the yard. Her family cannot keep her as their older, neutered Akita is just not good with dogs. They know Sunka is going to get hurt if they slip up with their current arrangement which is to always have them separated.  When Sunka is in the house she is always in her crate while the Akita free roams. So she’s either in her crate in the house or in the yard. Sunka does very well in her crate and never messes.  When she’s in the yard she tosses her toys, does zoomies, loves life and enjoys her yard freedom and playtime. Sunka barks at cats but hasn’t been near one because she respects fencing and just makes a racket at the cats in the neighborhood. Sunka has not been around kids and Carol thinks she’d do well around older kids. Sunka doesn’t have great manners so she jumps up when she meets people.  Carol said they got in over their heads bringing Sunka home and haven’t been able to get their older dog to be okay around Sunka. Sunka has lived a small life with Carol and hasn’t had interaction with other dogs. She’s just ten months old though so probably just needs some fun positive experiences with dogs to get the hang of puppy dogging with dog buddies.  Let’s help Sunka! She deserves to be a loved and full member of a family. Call or text Carol at 720–486–2858 to inquire about adopting the beautiful sleek and shiny Sunka.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 11, 2024, 9:43 pm
