Story
Update 11.8.24  Meet Zeke, the Charismatic Country Boy! Are you ready to fall head over paws in love with a dog who will capture your heart with his affectionate nature, playful antics, and rugged charm? Look no further than Zeke, the lovable Boxer/Mastiff cross who's been stealing hearts in his foster home for the past month. This gentle giant loves people, and people love him right back! Zeke is a social butterfly who thrives on human interaction, whether it's cuddling up on the couch for movie nights or greeting new friends with a wagging tail. His friendly demeanor makes him a perfect companion for families, singles, and seniors alike. Zeke is a natural-born cuddlebug who adores snuggling up with his humans, but he's also happy to be an only dog, enjoying all the attention and affection to himself. He's lived harmoniously with another dog in his foster home, but we recommend a slow introduction to ensure a peaceful coexistence (don't worry, our rescue team will guide you through the process!). This country boy loves the great outdoors, where he can explore open fields, sniff out hidden critters, and enjoy long walks (3-4 miles a day, no problem!). His leash manners are a work in progress, but with treats and positive reinforcement, he's learning to walk nicely by your side. A word of caution: Zeke can be reactive to unknown dogs, so patience, consistency, and reward-based training will help him become a pro. Zeke is a clever boy who's crate-trained and prefers to sleep in his cozy crate at night. He's vocal about his needs, so you'll always know when he's ready for food, playtime, or a potty break. This foodie loves treats, especially bones stuffed with peanut butter, bananas, and frozen carrots. To prevent gobbling, he uses a slow feeder or puzzle feeder, which keeps him engaged and satisfied. One of Zeke's quirks is his sensitivity to foot touching or unexpected contact. However, when he initiates affection, he's happy to be petted and adored. He's also a strong boy who benefits from an Easy Walk harness, which helps him walk nicely without pulling. Zeke is currently working on his fitness goals, and with smaller meals and more exercise, he's on the path to a healthier, happier him. If you're ready to provide a loving home, plenty of exercise, and a gentle touch, Zeke will reward you with a lifetime of loyalty, laughter, and snuggles. Are you ready to bring Zeke into your life? Contact Minnesota Boxer Rescue to learn more about this charming companion and how you can make him a part of your family!  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 8, 2024, 8:35 am

Story
Update 9.16.24 Dolly the Boxer! Dolly is the perfect little buddy for people who love dogs and want that wiggle butt greeting   you when you come home, but aren’t down for the challenge of raising a puppy or of training   a younger dog. Bonus: She lets you sleep-in in the morning!   Dolly is believed to have been a former “mill mama”/breeder and has had a difficult life but you   couldn’t tell it from her personality. One of the most affectionate and sweet dogs/boxers I’ve   ever cared for, Dolly is content to lay on the couch with you or will follow you around and help   you with whatever projects you’re working on. She loves attention and being petted   and talked to, telling her what a good girl she is. Despite what is in her past, she still has the basic   Boxer instincts of sweetness, sensitivity, loving people, and wanting to please you.   Dolly is healthy, doesn’t appear to have any allergies, is spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped.   Dolly will reluctantly go in her kennel but seems fine once she’s in it. I’ve left her out alone for short periods and she has done just fine. She happily sleeps in her own bed at night in your   room but would also sleep on the bed with you if you’d let her! She is potty trained but I’m training her to signal us with a jingle bell as well. She loves food and treats (is motivated to   learn with treats) and will definitely watch you eat but she’s well-mannered and I haven’t found   her to be food protective at all (I’ve had to stick my hand in her mouth to see what she found   on the floor and she didn’t resist). She also lets me pick her up and lets me clip her nails!   After being a mill dog - and who knows what else she’s been through - she is dog reactive, so   she would need to be the only dog in the home and she is also very interested in the local   rabbit population so a fenced in yard would be ideal. She is all of the best parts of a dog and a boxer and will make a snuggly (and wiggly) addition to   your family!  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.December 13, 2024, 7:40 pm

Story
Foster Update on Skip 11.8.24 Skip has been progressing wonderfully in his weekly training classes, and we just completed week 3! He’s building confidence around new people and strangers, which is a huge step. He’s doing great with commands like “sit” and “stay” before going through doors, and he’s mastered “go to your bed and stay” when we’re practicing inside the house. We’re also working on his reactions to doorbell rings and knocks. Skip loves earning treats as he learns to stay calm when those noises come up, and you can see how eager he is to please! Skip is a true boxer with plenty of energy and loves his walks. He’s happiest if he gets a walk before being left home alone, and he’d do best if left alone for no more than  4–6 hours . When meeting new people, Skip does wonderfully if he’s given the chance to sniff first and approach on his terms. He’s a sweet, affectionate dog with a lot of love to give and adores playing with his toys around the house. Update 10.21.24 Skip has been making fantastic progress, but he’s still a bit nervous around new people. He does best when meeting them on a leash and being ignored for a short period of time. Last night, we had about five new people come over, and it took him just 30 to 60 seconds before he wanted to go check them out. After that, they started giving him treats from a distance, and within two minutes, he was confidently taking treats from them and showing off his adorable wiggle butt!   We’ve also been working on a lot of commands—“sit,” “lay down,” “wait,” “heel,” “leave it,” and “look at me”—and he’s so eager to please and loves to learn. I can tell he feels very safe here, and once he gets to that point with his new family, he’ll be just as trusting with them. He’ll be ready to meet new people and welcome friends or family into his life with confidence. Update 9.30.24 Meet Skip!   Age:  Approximately 3 years old Personality: Sweet, affectionate, and always ready to wag his long tail—especially when he sees you! Training: Eager to learn and food-motivated but needs some additional training. He’s nervous at times with commands but really wants to please. Stranger Caution: Has some “stranger danger” when new people come to the door but is learning to calm down with training. Once he knows someone is friendly, he’s all about receiving pets! Dogs: Has done well playing with a female labradoodle. He shows interest in playing with other dogs when he sees them on walks, whining wanting to see what they are doing. He has met one other male boxer on leash but they did not hit it off. Overall I think he would do well living with another dog but just doing slow intros is always best.  Good with Kids: Lived with kids before and did great, but like many boxers, he can be overly protective over the kids. Barking at the dad when hugging kids for example. It’s important that adults establish clear leadership. Energetic & Playful: Loves walks, playing outside, and is always on the hunt for squirrels! Leash Skills: Uses a gentle leader to keep him from pulling—he’s strong and full of muscle! Cuddly: Would love to cuddle on the couch but is happy sleeping on his own bed at night. Fully Potty Trained: Skip is kennel trained during the day, as he gets nervous when left alone outside of his crate.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.December 1, 2024, 11:57 am
