Adoption Fee Covered + Free Training! Great news! Roland's adoption fee has been fully covered by a generous supporter, and OPH is including six virtual training sessions with a certified trainer during the first 60 days to help set you both up for success! Pleased to meet you! I’m Roland. I’m told that I’m a 90 lbs hound mix and about 10 years old. I’m an old soul. I love people but tend to want to be one of the guys. I like when other pets and humans match my lower energy level, or I could be an only child too! It’s probably best that I stay clear of the kitchen or I might help myself to a tasty treat, or two! I haven’t always known where my next meal will come from, so I can get a little moody towards people and animals. This is true with spaces too. You can’t make me get off the couch…but I can be convinced. -Loves to walk, but hold on tight I can pull! -Crate trained, but secure me in! -Loud noises can spook me, especially when I’m alone -Food Motivated -I’m a people person -I could chill with a cool cat -I’d be better with an experienced dog owner My foster dad has been working really hard with me and I have come a long way! He says that all my quirks can be easily managed, but my new family must have the patience to listen and willingness to understand them. Apply today! This dog tested positive for heartworm disease before arriving at the rescue. Heartworm disease is transmitted to a dog through a bite from an infected mosquito producing a positive test in six months. The dog was treated for the disease prior to transport north. Potential adopters will receive detailed information on the disease and their role in completing the recovery process from OPH’s heartworm coordinator. With monthly preventatives, the disease is completely preventable. Read more about heartworm disease here https://www.heartwormsociety.org/pet-owner-resources/heartworm-basics#q12

Story
Current Location: Eldersburg, MD Hello! Do like a challenge? Do you want to change a life for the better? Do you want to be a dog whisper? Do you want to be the person to bring a shy, beautiful girl out of her shell? There’s something magical about the moment you see a shy, anxious pet finally relax. Watching their muscles loosen up as they let their guards down — even if it’s just for a second — feels like a win. Every little step that brings them closer to you is an accomplishment all on its own. The bond formed while you help a shy dog feel safe and build up their confidence becomes extra special. Margarita needs you! She is a sweet, quiet, dog that needs solid support so she can learn trust and then to blossom into loving companion. Margarita is calm, quiet, crate trained, and house trained dog. She is smart and treat motivated. She will need a fenced in back yard. (not leashed trained). She gets along with other dogs as long as they are mild mannered. She loves to play with toys and uses a doggie dog to come and go outside during the day. This girl deserves a second chance at life in a home filled with kindness and understanding. She needs a champion! Could that be you ?

Story
Ollie is a handsome, sensitive dog who bonds deeply once he trusts you. He moves through the world without sound, so he relies on sight and touch. This shapes how he reacts, learns, and connects. Energy and Personality Ollie does best with calm routines and predictable days. New situations can feel intense for him. Once he settles in, he is affectionate, loyal, and steady. Training and Behavior Ollie completed a full training program at Sit Means Sit in Frederick. He learned visual cues. He understands recall, structure, and simple routines. Due to his deafness, he can feel overwhelmed at times, Ollie has had moments where he reacted out of fear. These reactions included two incidents where he made contact with a person. Both happened during stressful or unfamiliar moments. His future home should be comfortable managing a dog who needs space when unsure. A calm, adult only home with structure will help him stay relaxed and confident. Social Life Ollie has shown some reactivity toward strangers, especially during walks or when new people get close too quickly. With his trusted people, he softens and settles. He thrives when introductions are slow and the environment is quiet. Quirks and Special Traits Ollie’s world is visual, so hand signals and routine help him feel secure. He bonds strongly with his handler and enjoys calm time once he feels safe. Best Home Fit Ollie needs a quiet, stable home without children. A home with no dogs or one calm dog could work. Experience with deaf dogs is helpful, but an adopter willing to learn will do well. Predictability and patience will bring out his best qualities. Veterinary Care Ollie is up to date on vaccinations for his age. Ollie is neutered. Ollie is microchipped. Ollie is on heartworm preventative. Ollie is on flea and tick preventative. Ollie has received worm and parasite treatment

Story
Current Location: Alexandria, VA Fern is a two year old, forty seven pound bundle of life with plenty of energy and personality. She is a super sweet young girl who loves to play and explore, and she thrives when she is part of the action. She prefers to be near her people rather than in her crate, and she lights up whenever someone pays attention to her. She adores every dog she meets and she greets every person with joy. Fern would do best in an active home with another friendly dog and a fenced yard. She enjoys adventure and she loves to move. Her walking skills are a work in progress, and a gentle leader has made the learning process smoother. Her training gets stronger each day. She knows sit and is working on wait. She learns fast and she is eager to please, which makes her a fun pupil and a rewarding partner. She can be curious when she sees squirrels, so we do not know how she would do with cats. She shines during spa time. She lets you wipe her paws, clean her ears, and brush her teeth without any fuss. She wants to connect and she wants to be involved. Fern is ready for the right forever family. She will bring energy, affection, and a loyal heart to the people who welcome her in.

Story
Current Location: Strasburg, VA Estimated date of birth: 10/27/25 Hello! My name is Luna (L Litter)! I just arrived at OPH from Mississippi and I'm getting used to my new foster home. I'm a female, thought to be dachshund mix (with something else) born around 10/27/25. Based on my current weight of 5 pounds I will likely be in the 35 pound range when full grown. I enjoy wrestling with my sisters and playing with the fun toys in my pen. I also enjoy snuggling and giving kisses to my foster family. I'm doing a great job learning to use the peepads and I sleep in my crate with the door open. I will be available to go home with my new family starting 12/22/25. If you're looking for a playful affectionate pup apply to adopt me now. Some things to know about puppy adoptions: I'm searching for... * someone who won't leave me home alone for more than 4 hrs, at least not until I am older. The older I am the more I can stay home alone. * I am looking for my forever home, not my for right now home. So as I get bigger I need someone to teach me how to be the best dog I can be. I am young and still learning. You may want to teach me some new tricks like sit, stay, etc. Professional training will help me bond with you. That sounds like fun! * I saved the most important for last. I am hoping my new mom or dad will snuggle with me, play with me and love me forever and ever!

Story
Current Location: Chester, VA Meet Woody Woody is a big-hearted, lovable dog who just wants to be part of the family. His tail seems to wag on autopilot, and his sweet personality shines through the moment he feels comfortable. Woody is loyal, affectionate, and always ready to play or curl up close once he’s had his fun. Energy and Personality Woody has a medium to high energy level. He loves to play and zoom around the yard but settles nicely afterward for naps or quiet time. He’s happiest when included in the action and enjoys being close to his people. He can be a little whiny when left out, but it’s mostly because he loves company. Training and Behavior Woody is 99% house trained and quickly learned to use the outdoors as his restroom. He’s done great in a fenced yard and hasn’t made any escape attempts. He does fine in a large wire crate but can get vocal for a bit before settling. Because he’s not destructive when left alone, his foster family doesn’t always use the crate. Woody responds well to direction, listens when corrected, and can easily be redirected with a toy. Social Life Woody gets along well with other dogs once they get to know each other. He can be a bit overenthusiastic in play because he doesn’t always realize his size, but he means well and adjusts quickly with guidance. He has also done well with the resident cat, respectfully backing off after a warning hiss. Woody has met delivery people and neighborhood visitors and may bark at first, but he quiets down when told. Quirks and Special Traits Woody is a sweet, affectionate dog who thrives on love and inclusion. He’s playful, loyal, and loves a good cuddle session after a day of fun. His expressive nature and big personality make him a joy to have around. Best Home Fit Woody would do well in a home familiar with larger breeds or energetic dogs. He would love a family who enjoys playtime, outdoor activities, and has room for him to stretch his legs. A home where he’s not left alone for long periods would make him happiest. This dog tested positive for heartworm disease before arriving to the rescue. The disease was treated while in foster care. Heartworm disease is transmitted to a dog through a bite from an infected mosquito. With monthly preventatives, the disease is completely preventable.
