Story
Meet Gracie: Pet of the Week! Take a look at this sweet girl! Gracie is about 1-2 years old. She has so much love to give and is looking for a forever home, or a foster in the meantime. She's got it all! Good with kids, kennel trained, housebroken, and just amazing to all of the volunteers up here! She has a couple of quirks, which all pets do. She likes to flip her bowl so that she can eat her food on the floor. We're working on trying to get her to try new methods of eating breakfast and dinner, such as puzzle feeders, and various food dispensing toys, but she's not quite interested in those yet. NO CATS! She cannot be around cats, smaller animals, or chickens. Her prey drive kicks in pretty hard. But with her breeds, or what we think her breeds are, it can be expected. Her original paperwork has her listed as a Belgium Malinois/Coonhound mix. She has the facial structure of the Malinois and the energy, but the goofy personality of a coonhound and the coloring. We'd prefer to have someone with knowledge of the Malinois breed so that she doesn't end up coming back up here for her nature, but we are also willing to meet with those who are willing to agree to train her further and maintain that. She already knows some basic commands and uses them consistently. Oh, and she loves playing fetch with a ball. Former owner says if you throw it once, be prepared to continue throwing it for a good bit! We see more playful than spastic out of her, so we think she'd be a great fit for a family willing to put in the time with her! She is a bit intense and will need regular exercise and perhaps a “job” – she would excel no doubt at agility, etc. Call 913-684-4939. Visit at 510 Organ Ave. 11-4 MWF. Email fortleavenworthstrayfacility@gmail.com for an adoption application. Featured as the Pet of the Week in the Nov. 7, 2024, issue of the Fort Leavenworth Lamp.

Story
Meet Nina Currently in foster, please call to meet her! 2 years old Nina loves to play AND snuggle. She is gentle with kids from newborn to teens. She wants to play with the family kitten that isn't quite as interested in her (and that's the only reason she's not going to live there forever), and the family's older cat tolerates her, but she doesn't seem too interested in that kitty. Do you think you have the perfect home for her? She deserves only the best life has to offer! Call 913.684.4939 UPDATE from Nina's foster care provider: "Nina is doing significantly better on a leash now. She was started on a harness and she doesn’t really pull at all. She is a counter surfing food thief. She will eat anything on the counter or table. However, she is still a picky eater -- Yesterday she stole a potato and decided she didn’t like it, but she loves carrots. She's not a fan of peanut butter and the kibble that was sent with her, but a different kibble was much more appreciated. Maybe she just prefers certain root veggies and less dog standard treats? I'm able to take her leash off her on the porch and she walks right in when I open the door. She needs a yard to run in and go potty. She enjoys her walks, but with all of the ice and snow still on the ground, getting her to go potty is a bit of a challenge since she her paws are sensitive to the cold. She loves the outdoors. She almost never barks. Some days not at all! She loves all the other dogs around us and always greets them with a wagging tail. She still jumps on some of the kids but I think she’s good at reading people’s energy because she never jumps on the foster or the toddlers. The foster's sons however, love it, so she jumps all over them. " Call 913.684.4939 to meet Nina!

Story
We got Oscar when he was 8 weeks old from a rescue. We have tried reaching out to them but it appears they are no longer in operation. He is part German Shepard, Dodson, chicahua, shitzu and I think Doberman. We did a dna test which we can forward when he was younger. He is a fun dog but we have moved into our camper in May 2024, at first he did fine but then storms came and he has been terrified every since. He needs a yard to play in and we can not provide that for him. He has been on a leash before but not often because we use a trainer on him. He has always been around dogs and kids. We only kennel him when we leave to go somewhere, otherwise he is roaming free. At night he sleeps on small blankets on our bedroom floor and had no issues. He does have the occasional accident when he 1st meets someone, we call this happy tinkles, but otherwise he lets you know when he needs to go out. We only give him hard toys because he will destroy the soft toys.

Story
I have to rehome my Foxhound Mix. He is approximately 60lbs and fully grown. Now 2 years old. He is a sweet boy who loves to run. He does great with kids, and cats and loves other dogs. Unfortunately, I am selling my house next month and need to find him a home ASAP. I cannot take him where I am going as they only allow 1 dog. My other dog is 12 years old and would be put to sleep if she were to be put up for adoption. He is house-trained, crate-trained, up-to-date on all shots, and neutered. Please be kind as this is already hard enough. Selling my home was not part of my plan but I can no longer afford it.
