Story
Hey, Chief here! So I've had it a little bit rough before I got here to HOPE. I was adopted from the local animal control by a lady who loved me but didn't quite get my best interests. She kept me inside at all times, even to use the bathroom on puppy pads. As most people know, Husky's need a whole lot of exercise and enrichment! Because I wasn't getting this, I ended up chewing up the furniture and lots of other things around the house. She did not like this, so here I am at HOPE. Everyone is hoping to get me an adopter experienced with husky's or at least someone who understands my needs and will make sure I can get the life I need so I don't resort to chewing things up when I get bored. I sure don't do that here at the shelter.

Story
Meet Gracie: Pet of the Week! Take a look at this sweet girl! Gracie is about 1-2 years old. She has so much love to give and is looking for a forever home, or a foster in the meantime. She's got it all! Good with kids, kennel trained, housebroken, and just amazing to all of the volunteers up here! She has a couple of quirks, which all pets do. She likes to flip her bowl so that she can eat her food on the floor. We're working on trying to get her to try new methods of eating breakfast and dinner, such as puzzle feeders, and various food dispensing toys, but she's not quite interested in those yet. NO CATS! She cannot be around cats, smaller animals, or chickens. Her prey drive kicks in pretty hard. But with her breeds, or what we think her breeds are, it can be expected. Her original paperwork has her listed as a Belgium Malinois/Coonhound mix. She has the facial structure of the Malinois and the energy, but the goofy personality of a coonhound and the coloring. We'd prefer to have someone with knowledge of the Malinois breed so that she doesn't end up coming back up here for her nature, but we are also willing to meet with those who are willing to agree to train her further and maintain that. She already knows some basic commands and uses them consistently. Oh, and she loves playing fetch with a ball. Former owner says if you throw it once, be prepared to continue throwing it for a good bit! We see more playful than spastic out of her, so we think she'd be a great fit for a family willing to put in the time with her! She is a bit intense and will need regular exercise and perhaps a “job” – she would excel no doubt at agility, etc. Call 913-684-4939. Visit at 510 Organ Ave. 11-4 MWF. Email fortleavenworthstrayfacility@gmail.com for an adoption application. Featured as the Pet of the Week in the Nov. 7, 2024, issue of the Fort Leavenworth Lamp.

Story
I have to rehome my Foxhound Mix. He is approximately 60lbs and fully grown. Now 2 years old. He is a sweet boy who loves to run. He does great with kids, and cats and loves other dogs. Unfortunately, I am selling my house next month and need to find him a home ASAP. I cannot take him where I am going as they only allow 1 dog. My other dog is 12 years old and would be put to sleep if she were to be put up for adoption. He is house-trained, crate-trained, up-to-date on all shots, and neutered. Please be kind as this is already hard enough. Selling my home was not part of my plan but I can no longer afford it.

Story
My daughter adopted Jewels from Ark Veterinary Clinic in Sterling, Kansas, where she was 2 years old at the time. Her birthdate is 12-1-2015. She will be 9 years old in December. She is a good dog with a lot of energy. She needs to be able to run and/or take walks regularly. She loves all the attention. She is grate trained. Jewels does not like other dogs or cats. Jewels would thrive best in a home with no small children and where she would be the only dog. Jewels has urinary incontinence and takes Proin Chews daily. She has a six month supply for her adopter. She eats Beneful twice a day and is up to date on all vaccinations including rabies, kennel cough and annual. She has also test negative for heart worm. There are allergies in the family that we have tried to contain with medicine and that is no longer an option. The child's allergies have become so bad we have no choice but to find someone who can give her a loving home.

Story
Hero was born on 10-13-2014. He turned 10 years old in October. My daughter rescued him when he was 3 years old. He loves other dogs and children. Hero has not been around cats. He needs a home where he is loved and allowed to run outside once in a while. The fence needs to be dog proof because he is like Houdini and has gotten out of a small break in our fence a couple times until it was completely fixed. Hero is a loving, snuggle bug. He wants all the attention and loves to sit on your lap. Hero loves his treats and sits waiting for his turn. He is very easy going and loves to hang out and watch tv. He also loves French fries :)
