Story
If you want the easiest dog on the planet, Gary is your man. Gary isn’t fresh out of fucks. Gary never had any fucks to give in the first place. Gary has never given one single fuck. Gary was born with a fuck inventory of precisely zero. He is so low maintenance and doesn’t take the little things for granted. Give him a comfy bed/blanket, regular meals, trees to poop on and maybe a few bones/toys to destroy and he is happy as a clam. Bonus points for a head scratch every now and then. He has a sneeze that makes him sound like a cartoon character. He never barks, unless you try to give him eye drops one too many times. He may or may not be able to hear, so you might have to physically drag a blanket he’s laying on for a couple feet before he wakes up. He walks in slow motion until he decides to turn the turbo jets on for a few feet before it’s back to moving at a glacial pace. He doesn’t require much exercise. A few trips around the block per day will suffice. Sometimes, he just wants to go out and do his business and then go right back inside, especially first thing in the morning when he is PUMPED to eat breakfast. Gary lives in busy Wicker Park and does just fine in that environment. Gary likes to poop ON trees. Not near them, on them. He is very independent and will often resort to his crate for a deep sleep, even if the rest of the family is in another room. He likes to say hi to other dogs, but gets a little too excited and has been known to attempt to hump them like the creepy old man that he is, so he’ll need to work on finding some chill. Gary could thrive in any home because he doesn’t give a shit about anything. That said, a home with older kids who understand that he can’t see or hear super well, which means he can startle easy at times, would be best. While he might take a minute to fully trust you/give a shit about you, there’s nothing better than when he sits by you and just stares at you with his crusty eyes while wagging his tail or when he chooses your foot to lay on when there are so many other perfectly comfortable options available. Speaking of which, he requires eye medication, but really doesn’t like when it’s applied and will let you know, so an adopter who is comfortable with that would be a plus. Name: Gary Age: 8ish Gender: Male Breed: Pit mix Weight: 60lbs Crate trained: Yes Potty trained: Yes Dog friendly: Yes Cat friendly: Unknown Kid friendly: Yes, older Vaccinated: Yes Spayed/Neutered: Yes Heartworm: Negative Microchipped: Yes Energy level: Low Medical: will need heart and eye medication for the rest of his life Gary is currently being fostered in Chicago, Illinois. Story
Are you looking for a puppy that happens to be the size and weight of a full grown dog? Well, you found her! Nikita is a baby in all ways except looks. She’s mouthy, whiny, constantly needs attention, doesn’t understand boundaries, chews on everything she can reach, and occasionally has accidents in the house. Truly, a perfect combo. Who wouldn’t want to adopt this asshole? Beautiful Nikita is actual proof that hot girls are always crazy. All jokes aside, Nikki is a very sweet pup who is just learning the basics of living with a family after being in a shelter for almost six months. While she can be frustrating at times (especially when she steals your AirPod case and throws it under the couch), she is a very sweet girl who loves every dog and person she meets. So much so that she tries to run up to everything that moves on her walks. The prey drive is strong in this one. We have to be especially careful bringing her out at night as she will pull you across the street if she sees a bunny. Though she has been working hard learning how to be more polite on the leash. As far as training goes, Nikita knows some basic cues such as sit, down, stay, and drop it. “Drop it” is extremely important for her since her favorite thing to do is pick up random things she should not have. She is in the process of being crate trained, but she will cry if there is no food or something to distract her. Do not let the crying trick you, she will be a menace once released from the crate. She will also find some secret corner in which to drop giant, surprise shits for you to find later. She’s very thoughtful like that. I know she sounds like a lot so far, and honestly she is. However, she is very funny as well. She loves playing with the hose, though she does not seem to be a huge fan of sprinklers. Her legs seem almost too long for her body at times, so she is very clumsy. We honestly think she may have some Great Dane in her. She and her foster brother, a male pit mix, love each other dearly and are constantly harassing one another. Foster bro loves to get in her face when she has treats or a toy, and she lets him. Like I said before, she loves other dogs. But don’t worry, she loves people too! She’ll snuggle up next to you on the couch and/or drape her body on top of your face until you can’t breathe. Suffocation is Nikita’s love language. An ideal home for Nikki would have a yard and another dog. That or an extremely active family that can take her on very long, tiring walks and adventures to get her energy out. They would also be willing to work with a puppy who still needs some training. Baby proofing your house may be necessary. She has been left in her crate for extended hours with no accidents or attempts of escape, so you can be away from home for work and not worry about her. Give this sweet girl a chance! Nikita Age: 1 Gender: Female Breed: Pit mix Weight: 60lbs Crate trained: Yes Potty trained: Mostly Dog friendly: Yes, large & playful ones Cat friendly: Maybe - she had a good cat test at the shelter but hasn’t been exposed to cats in her foster home Kid friendly: Yes, older Energy level: Medium to high Nikita is currently being fostered in Chicago, IL. No out of state applicants, please. If you’d like to meet Nikita, the first step is to fill out an application: https://darkhorsedogs.org/adoption-application

Bailey Age: 2 years Gender: Female Breed: Mastiff mix Weight: 100lbs Crate trained: Yes Potty trained: Yes Dog friendly: No Cat friendly: Yes Kid friendly: Unknown Vaccinated: Yes Spayed/Neutered: Yes Heartworm: Negative Microchipped: Yes Energy level: Medium, can and will find things she can destroy if not watched or exercised regularly. Location: Fostered in Chicago, Illinois. No out of state applicants, please. Bailey came to us as a skinny, terrified, stray dog that would have likely been euthanized at animal control. Her finder spent days gaining her trust to get her off the streets, and offered to foster her. Bailey has blossomed since first being found. She loves to be outside. Very protective of her people. Loves to roll in the grass. Sweetie pie. Loves to eat. Enjoys stealing wet cat food. Not a fan of other dogs. Still working on her walking calm when others are too close for her comfort but she’s a protective breed and watches over her foster mom. She doesn’t care for bike riders. Bailey is a sweetie pie that thinks she's a small lap dog. She's happy just to be with you. She loves long walks and playing outside but if you just want to stay inside and watch a movie she's content to put her big head on your lap and watch the movie with you. Bailey would do best in a quiet home with adults only. If you’re interested in meeting Bailey, please fill out an application at the link below. https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/DHDN/Dog

Story
Pocket pittie alert! Gadget is available for adoption! Gadget knows basic cues, and a couple extras (touch and paw). He’s not great at ‘drop it’ with a tennis ball, unless you have another one. He goes bonkers over toys, and is a pro at destroying them in seconds. He’s great on a leash, unless he sees a squirrel, then it’s every man (and dog) for themselves. Gadget loves people. He has no stranger danger whatsoever. He can get overstimulated and jump at faces, but in the nicest way possible. He just wants to give you a kiss, that might also break your nose. I imagine this is also what it’s like to kiss an MMA fighter. But Gadget is way cuter. Because he loves people so much, I bet you’re thinking you should take him everywhere with you? Don’t. Have you heard the lambs screaming, Clarice? Gadget will ruin your day while simultaneously charming everyone in the room. Because, his face. Gadget is crate trained, but can be trusted being left out in a bedroom/extra room. He would love to share a bed with you at night, he makes a perfect donut and doesn’t move an inch, but his snoring can wake the dead, or dead inside (my husband). Gadget is fully potty trained. He can hold it for a full work day (8+ hours) with no issues. He’s medium/high energy when he’s been cooped up. Two-ball fetch for 10-15 minutes once or twice a day is great for him, or a long walk. He’ll pass out, or self entertain, if he gets a chance to run out his energy. Name: Inspector Gadget Age: 3-4 years Gender: Male Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier – we did his DNA test, and he’s as pure as they come. Weight: 40lbs Crate Trained: Yes, but can be trusted left out in a room. Potty Trained: Yes. Fully. Absolutely no accidents and no marking. Dog Friendly: Would do best as an only dog. Cat Friendly: No Kid Friendly: Older Vaccinated: Yes Neutered: Yes Heartworm: Negative Microchipped: Yes Energy level: Medium Inspector Gadget is currently being fostered in Itasca, Illinois. No out of state applicants, please. If you’d like to meet him, the first step is to fill out an application: https://darkhorsedogs.org/adoption-application
