Story
Capone, affectionately known as “Cappy,” is a 4-year-old, beautiful brindle boy with a story that tugs at the heartstrings. For over 1,175 days, he has waited in shelter and foster care, longing for a family to call his own. He spent 18 months at Winnebago County Animal Control and has now been with Second City Canine Rescue for 638 days—one of the longest foster stays in SCCR history.Cappy was once adopted, but through no fault of his own, he was returned due to the adopters’ unforeseen circumstances. Despite this setback, he remained a shining light at the shelter, where he helped staff evaluate other animals, showcasing his gentle spirit and intelligence. In his foster home, Cappy has proven just how special he is. He’s mastered commands like “sit,” “fetch,” “touch,” “down,” and “paw,” and he delights in giving kisses to everyone he meets. He has a soft spot for children, and he is one of the best cuddlers around. While he isn’t overly energetic and doesn’t require daily walks, he dreams of a home with a fenced yard where he can play fetch to his heart`s content.Cappy is incredibly treat-motivated, making him an eager learner for any additional training you wish to pursue. He’s fully house-trained and doesn’t need to be crated when his family is away—he just wants to be loved and included.Cappy deserves a family who will cherish him, spoil him, and provide him the love he has so desperately waited for. Every day that passes without a forever home feels like an eternity for this sweet boy. If you’re ready to open your heart and home, Cappy is ready to give you unconditional love in return. Will you be the family he’s been waiting so long for?Interested in adopting this dog? Story
Searching for a hero! Miss Trixxy is about 5 years old with a beautiful, smooth coat and expressive ears. Her breed is unknown, but her shy eyes and submissive nature will quickly tug at your heartstrings.Miss Trixxy was abandoned and came to SCCR on a transport from Kentucky in September 2022. She has bonded quickly with her foster parents and loves nothing more than to snuggle up beside them or sit on their laps. She finds comfort in being close to the people she trusts. Miss Trixxy is a low-energy dog who craves love and attention from her humans. She enjoys taking walks and is a pleasant companion. However, she is fearful of other dogs. Her foster parents manage this by bringing treats to distract her (she’s highly treat-motivated!), avoiding other dogs when possible, and using a harness for extra security. This sweet girl is looking for a quiet home without other dogs, children, or frequent visitors. All she really wants is a human or two to trust, snuggle with, and feel safe with. Watching her confidence grow will be a tremendously rewarding experience for the right adopter. Could you be her hero?Interested in adopting this dog? Story
Are you ready to welcome the cutest bundle of fluff you’ve ever seen in your life? Meet Puppy, approx. 2-year old Chow Chow, Collie, Golden retriever mix. Let`s talk about Puppy`s skills. He`s like a treat-seeking missile, guided by the invisible scent trails of his favorite snacks. He knows his commands – sit, leave it, and touch – and if you wave a treat, he’ll be happy to give you a show. He’s friendly and playful, too; he loves squeaky toys and a good dog wrestle! Puppy does great with all kinds of well behaved dogs. In fact, he`d love a home with a fenced-in yard and a confident doggie sibling who can continue to show him the ropes as he grows up. His best bud & foster brother Jaxson can vouch for this. They`re like the canine version of a dynamic duo, causing double trouble and playing all day long in the yard. We`re looking for a special kind of human for our sweet Puppy, someone with a more quiet home who understands that building trust takes patience, time and treats (mostly treats, though).. So, if you`ve got a bit of a doggy whisperer in you, and a love for treats that rivals his own, then you might just be the hero this fluffy adventurer is looking for!Interested in adopting this dog? Story
Cleo is a laid-back, small senior gal who adores people and greets visitors with extra warmth. She`s easygoing, unfazed by anything, and prefers ear rubs and lounging on the couch, rather than learning new tricks. Though she`s comfortable around other dogs, she often ignores them during walks, finding more interest in observing birds, squirrels, and bunnies. On a recent playdate with two dogs, she was more fascinated by sniffing and watching them play rather than joining in. Cleo also gets along wonderfully with cats. She also enjoy being with older children. Her perfect day involves soaking up the sun outdoors. She walks beautifully on a leash and enjoys people-watching. A car ride is a delightful bonus for her, where she loves sitting on her bed in the front seat, occasionally peeking out the window before resting and watching her foster drive. At home, there`s no need for a crate since she has impeccable manners and respects the home when left alone. Since being at her foster home, she’s never chewed on anything, not even a sock, and has show no interest in chew toys. House trained from the start, Cleo quickly adapted to her foster’s home routine. She is food motivated and loves her wet meals. Being a quiet and patient gal, her foster has only heard her bark a few times. She’s flexible and loves to naps on her bed, under the table or on the couch. Cleo is perfectly content when left alone, and her little tail wags with joy when you return, guaranteed to brighten your day.Cleo is a spirited soul, eager to embrace life to the fullest despite her mammary cancer. Her greatest wish is to share her joy with someone special. A single-level home would be perfect for her. If you`re ready to welcome a loyal and loving companion who will light up your days, Cleo is excitedly waiting for you. Could you be the one to make her dreams come true?Interested in adopting this dog? Story
Cecilia, you`re breakin` our hearts with your charm! This 5-year-old Hound-mix has just weaned her litter of puppies and is ready to find her forever home. Much like the song, she’s a bit selective when it comes to canine companions, preferring dogs smaller than she is. But when it comes to people, she’s all in—social, affectionate, and always ready for a cuddle or a treat. Cecilia is great on walks with a harness, loves to travel, and gets along well with older kids, though she`s still figuring out how she feels about babies and cats. Just watch out for bunnies and squirrels; Cecilia loves a good chase! With her playful spirit and love for adventure, she`ll have you singing, `Cecilia, you`re my girl!` all day long.Interested in adopting this dog? Story
Copper is a dog of many talents. He’s the self-appointed captain of the water polo team! His obsession with the kiddie pool is unmatched, dreaming of swimming all day long. He’s a polite walker, though if another dog catches his eye, he might need a little reminder to stay on track. Copper is learning to be a pro at signaling when it’s time for a potty break, improving each day! Another one of Copper`s talents is high jumping. He needs to have a six-foot privacy fence in his future home. When it comes to food, Copper’s a dream—he’ll happily eat just about anything! Strength is a natural talent that he shows with his toy-destroying abilities; only the toughest toys can handle his playful energy. Skilled at knowing when and when not to bark, Copper’s prefers to speak up when he sees someone running outside, a stranger approaching, the doorbell ringing, or when there’s an unexpected knock. He’s always up for a new adventure, and he’s the perfect co-pilot in the car, safely harnessed in the back seat. When the day winds down or his foster needs to be out of the home, Copper’s is more than happy to settle in his kennel for a well-deserved treat. Once he’s in, he’s content and cozy, ready to recharge for his next round of fun.A true social butterfly, Copper’s thrives on attention from his people and visitors alike. He’s mastered the art of snuggling, and his love for belly rubs and ear scratches is endless. Goofy, bouncy, and always full of energy, Copper’s antics are bound to make you smile. While he’s eager to please, his enthusiasm can sometimes outpace his attention span—but that’s part of his charm! He gets along well with the two dogs in his foster`s home, though his playful wrestling may be a bit too much for some. With his fun-loving personality, Copper may prefer the company of dogs who enjoy his spirited play style. He also prefers older, more mature children than younger ones.Copper is looking for the perfect match, a loving family where he can truly shine. He is very smart and has a lot of potential. He desires someone who is patient and will guide him to be his best self. Can this be you?Interested in adopting this dog?
