Story
I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other dogs in need. Thank you! Update from Caleb's Foster Family: Caleb is doing well in his new foster home in New England. They tell us Caleb is shy and trying to figure out how to be a happy dog like the foster family’s bigger dog. He follows the big dog around and reaches for pets when the big dog does. Caleb does little happy prances when we walk in the snow in the woods and likes to be at the back of the line so he can keep track of everyone. He looks like he has Golden Retriever and Corgi in him, but in the snow, he looks like an Arctic fox! Caleb likes to sit in a bed where he can see everyone, but tucked away or under the desk while I am working. His eye contact is wonderful; he looks right into your eyes to figure out what is happening. He has been a perfect house guest, respectful of the cats, has had no accidents, and is learning how to go up and down stairs. We can bathe him and put “Mushers Secret” on his paws. We think he would do well in an adult home, with a calm atmosphere, lots of walks, and a happy, calm dog to mentor him. Check out Caleb's video link. Caleb's Backstory: "Well, hello, everyone... My name is Caleb and I beg your forgiveness if I am talking in a quiet voice, but I am a bit shy. Come a little closer and I will tell you all I know about myself. We dogs are so puzzled about how this “stray” thing happens. One day we’re someone’s pet and the next thing you know, we’re alone and scared. I somehow wound up in the Dixon Correctional Institute. Oh, I didn’t do anything wrong to be incarcerated but was taken into their rehabilitation program, kind of like you see on the TV show Pitbulls and Parolees. While I was given food and shelter in this program, not much was done to help me feel comfortable in my own fur. But thankfully, they called SGRR to rescue me!” “I hear people say that I am very handsome, a real looker, and very sweet – I think these are all good things! Right? The rescue people think I am a Golden Retriever mixed with something cute and pocket-sized since I am on the smaller side at about 30 pounds. My eyes are a warm brown and I heard this nice lady say that their sweetness melts her heart. “When I meet you, I am shy at first, but I am so ready to fall in love again and I hope to find an owner who will love me for who I am. I am in a wonderful foster home now and the more I get to know my humans, the more comfortable I become around them. I cherish their affection and their kindness, and I love how they speak to me with gentle tones. I like the company of calmer dogs. I walk pretty nicely on a leash and have a moderate energy level. A quiet adult-only home, with kind, patient, and soft-spoken humans, who are home more often than not, would be ideal for me. I would relish a home where I can be spoiled, kissed, and loved. But please know, I will need time to adjust and unpack my bags. In return, I promise to be your best friend, forever!" Well, thank you for sharing your story with us, Caleb! We are delighted to have you with us and you will learn all about kindness in your southern foster home with Cheryl & Paul. They tell us that Caleb is slowly becoming more comfortable with them and with being in a home environment. Caleb now allows Paul to pick him up and will also stay on the couch with them for a while now, whereas a week or so ago, he would only stay up for a few minutes. Caleb doesn’t mind having a leash on him, but it does not seem like walks have been part of his previous life experience. He eats pretty well and will do so now with his foster parents in the room. Cheryl tells us that when she gets up in the morning, she finds that Caleb’s toys have been moved about the room – oh to be a fly on the wall when all is quiet and Caleb ventures to play with his toys. He is taking baby steps but is certainly moving forward! Caleb is estimated to be about 5 years old and has the adorable look of a perpetual puppy. He has been neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped. Since he tested positive for heartworm he has been under treatment and is almost ready for his forever home. He has been given a Proheart 6 injection for heartworm prevention so Caleb will not need any additional HW preventatives for 6 months. If you are approved to adopt through SGRR, have a quiet adult-only home, a fenced yard, a calm resident dog, and your specialty is TLC, please contact Cheryl Kewley to be considered to adopt Caleb. If not yet approved, please fill out an application. Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to become an important, forever part of their life journey by continuing the rehabilitation we have begun. If not yet approved for adoption, please visit our website to learn more and to submit an online application. Click here to visit our website. Please contact us with any questions regarding your application status. PLEASE APPLY by submitting an application via this online link: Click for Adoption Application About Our Rescue Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready. The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home. Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed. Story
NBGR has three lovely puppies from and OOPS! litter to place. Their Mom is a very sweet Coton de Tulear and their Dad is a charming (and still quite puppyish himself!) Brussels Griffon. Mom is 15.5 lbs. and Dad is 12 lbs. The puppies have grown up with their Mom, their Dad and the mom’s littermate – who has taught them the importance of respecting another dog’s space. The owners have poured their hearts into giving these little ones the best start in life. They have all their baby records, introduced them to Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), and made sure they had plenty of visitors, including children. They even took them on safe field trips to get them used to new environments. As a result, they love the vet and everyone they meet! (Aren’t they lucky that the owner’s daughter is a dog trainer so has helped to get these pups off to a great start!) With so much going on, alone training has been the biggest challenge. But they're making progress with brief kennel sessions, learning to walk on a leash, and mastering basic manners and obedience. They're also doing well with pee pad potty training, though occasional accidents are to be expected (they are puppies, after all!). Poppy 3868 is a charming brown puppy with a sprinkle of black in her coat – and she might even lighten up as she grows! This sweet girl is going to make a wonderful companion! Poppy has a delightful personality. Sometimes she's right in the middle of everything, and other times she's happy to play independently. She's always observing the humans and other dogs around her, but she doesn't always need to be part of the action. But when she is ready to play, watch out! She's one of the first to try new things and one of the last to fall asleep at naptime. This clever girl already has a fantastic "on/off" switch. Pick her up, and she melts into your arms, ready for a cuddle. She'll even climb up to your shoulder and rest her head there. But if you're in the mood for some fun, she's always up for a romp! Poppy is super food-motivated and eager to please, which makes training a breeze. She's working on mastering basics like "Sit," potty training with pee pads, and wearing a harness. Poppy is a clever, sweet, and spunky little girl who's sure to steal your heart! She was born on 10/18/24. Her weight at around 14 weeks was 8.5 lbs. She looks more like her Mom than her dad but has more of her Dad’s coloring. If you are interested in adopting Poppy please fill out our adoption application at nbgr.org. If you already have an application on file contact Vicki at vboneill@optonline.net. Poppy is in Massachusetts.

Red 3869 is a handsome reddish brown male puppy with a unique coat featuring black accents and creamy highlights. He may even lighten up more as he grows! This little rascal is full of energy and loves to explore! He's very affectionate, but only for short bursts – there's just too much to see and do! Red enjoys his pocket carrier but would much rather be out and about, walking on his own four paws. He's going to make a fantastic hiking buddy for an active adopter! Red has a curious mind and needs plenty of engaging activities to keep him happy and out of trouble. He's working on basic commands like "Sit," potty training with pee pads, and learning to be comfortable alone. This busy boy is a snuggle bug when he's tired out, and with some patience and training (mastering his "on/off switch"!), he'll be a cuddly house marshmallow. Red would thrive with activities like Doggy Zen, nose work, and plenty of structured playtime outdoors. Red was born on 10/18/24. His weight at around 14 weeks was 7.2 lbs. He looks more like his Mom than his dad but has more of his Dad’s coloring. If you are interested in adopting Red please fill out our adoption application at nbgr.org. She has a cute underbite and a soft, cottony coat. Merry can be a little cautious in new environments and likes to check in with her trusted person for reassurance. Once she feels safe, she loves to explore and play! Merry would thrive with a savvy owner who can help her build her confidence. This sweet girl is a more mellow puppy who enjoys cuddling in her human's lap as much as she loves chasing them around the yard! She's already quite good at using pee pads and is learning basic commands like "Sit" and walking with a harness. Merry is just starting crate training, but she's very comfortable in an ex-pen and is learning to entertain herself. Like many puppies, she can be vocal when left alone, but she's making progress with enrichment activities and having her people nearby. If you're looking for a loving companion to share your life with, Merry might be the perfect puppy for you! Merry was born on 10/18/24. Her weight around 14 weeks was 7.7 lbs. She has black and tan coloring like a griff but a longer nose like her mom. If you are interested in adopting Merry please fill out our adoption application at nbgr.org. Story
Sweet Sam is very confused about the recent turn his life has taken. He was adopted from an Alabama shelter as a young pup and has lived his life with the same family. Unfortunately, their lives took an unexpected turn and Sam found himself back at the shelter. Our volunteer photographer fell head-over-heels for Sam! She shares, "He trots around and runs so adorably! He has short legs, but I swear he can cover some ground! He’s friendly and is very interested in other dogs at the clinic. We were outside in the rain and he let me know he’d rather be out than in even if it’s not very nice outside. :) I would say he has a uniquely sweet personality. He likes to play and picked up a toy, but he also likes to observe what others (humans and dogs) are doing. He has expressive eyes and appears to be quite intelligent. He was sad when I had to put him back in his kennel and I imagine he simply wants to go home." Before they left him back at the shelter, Sam's family told the staff that he loves a soft bed and a spot in the sunshine. He loves soft squeaky toys and is good with dogs, cats, and children. The family told us that he is both house-trained and crate-trained. Sam's size is ideal for just about anyone, especially those folks who are finding they want a smaller dog as they get older and cannot pick up a 90 lb dog. He would be a great dog for first-time dog owners or even for folks living in an apartment. He is perfect for anyone who wants a loving companion! Sam is 6 years and 9 months old and weighs around 40 lbs. He has been brought up-to-date on vaccinations, is neutered, heartworm negative, and micro-chipped at the shelter. Sam has been given a Proheart injection which provide 6 months of heartworm prevention. He appears to be a mix of the short-legged variety, possibly Dachshund or Corgi, but whatever it was that went into his DNA, it produced one adorable doggy! Sam-a-lama from Alabama will be headed north in early-to-mid March to be directly adopted. Story
I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other dogs in need. Thank you! Handsome Beckett is a stunning Golden Retriever who was picked up as a stray in lower AL. He is estimated to be about 3-4 years old and is as cute as they come! Like most Golden RETRIEVERS, Beckett loves to play and retrieve toys and balls. In fact, he loves his toys so much that when presented with a treat, he has to stop and consider if he wants to drop his toy for that yummy treat! You can see how much he loves to retrieve in his video. Beckett spent some time in a foster home in the south and we have found out that he is good with both the cat and dog in the home. His foster mom shares, "He’s very curious about my cat but has not been aggressive towards her at all. She is very dog tolerant living in this foster house and Beckett gets along well with my dog. Beckett is not food aggressive and we are working on both leash walking and house-training. He is very handsome and has lots of energy." Beckett has been neutered, brought up-to-date on vaccinations, micro-chipped, and is negative for heartworm. This fella is incredibly playful and just a joy to be around!! If you are approved to adopt through SGRR, please contact Cheryl Kewley to be considered to adopt this scrumptious boy.
