All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, shots current (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies where applicable), dewormed, flea and tick treated, and microchipped.  * If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, www.dpsrescue.com for an application. Our adoption fees vary. Each biography will specifically list the adoption fee.Adoption Fee: $250 Thank you to Sydney K. for her generous donation towards our Sticky Dogs to help find them homes.  Spring is an option for Foster To Adopt. Spring is an 8 year old Dachshund-Pit mix who can’t wait to blossom with her forever family! Spring came to our rescue with her litter of 2 week old babies after she was abandoned at the shelter, which is no place for a sweet little family. Now that her babies are all grown up and she has had some Mama relaxation time, she is ready to find a home to live out her golden years in! Spring weighs 27 pounds and is a low-rider! Are you a Pitbull lover but the size of a typical Pitty doesn't fit your life? Well, we have your answer here. This girl is all that but in a compact size!   Below is a note from Spring’s foster.  “Spring is a fabulously cuddly and loving gal who can’t wait to meet her new BFF! When you first meet her, she can take a little bit to warm up but once she does, she is ready for non-stop snuggles. She would love to find a home where she can spend her days loving her people, being the best zoom companion ever! Spring is more of a couch potato kind of dog, but she does love her daily romps around the neighborhood. Spring is fully potty trained both with potty pads and outside. Spring adores the softer things in life, from blankets to toys and dotes on her Lamb Chop. Spring would be a perfect hike companion or a “snuggle and movie” friend.  Spring starts her morning with a potty break and breakfast at around 7 AM. During the day, she hangs out in a playpen with her bed and toys. She spends her time mostly snoozing and soaking up the sunshine. After I finish work for the day, we go on a walk to the park where she sniffs and gets her zoomies out. After her walk, she comes home for dinner and snuggles as I unwind from the day. She ends her day curled up on her soft dog bed as she dreams of adventures ahead!  Spring would do best in a home where she can be the only dog, or with a low-key doggy companion. She loves walks and trots alongside me as we wander the neighborhood. Spring gets along with all people, but prefers a slow introduction involving LOTS of treats! Spring is such a lovely girl with beautiful, soulful eyes who deserves the absolute best forever home.” Spring would be best suited for a home with prior dog experience, but she could be a first-time dog. Spring would do best as a solo dog. Kids in the home should be over the age of 10.November 5, 2024, 9:13 pm

Stewie

German Shepherd Dog

Male, 2 yrs 11 mos

Story
Stewie is a charming, devoted and affectionate two-year-old boy with folks he knows and trusts. He completed a month-long training through Canine Purpose's Board and Traning program in Loomis and currently attends group classes with his foster families. This handsome boy has the brains and a big heart to match. He can be handful with a cheeky side making significant progress in impulse control while his handlers have learned that he's a boy who needs structure and thrives when his people give him clear direction. Stewie has two foster homes, switching between the households regularly.  Stewie's affectionate nature once he establishes a relationship with you means that you'll always have a best friend nearby, preferably leaning into you or snuggling while you watch TV or read and if allowed in bed with you. In his foster home with doggie mates, he sleeps free starting the night snuggled right in bed next to his humans to move off to a dog bed later in the night. In his foster home where he's a solo dog, he sleeps in his crate easily; knowing each households rules and following them.  Stewie has been working hard in his training sessions, mastering meeting strangers with an easy hi, learning a solid place command, working with multiple handlers on the desired heel position, and maintaining his learned skills in increasingly distracting environments. At the same time, he loves his trainers with his vast capacity for joy and loves to please them. Stewie has a natural shepherd stranger danger focus around strangers requiring an experienced handler whom he trusts at which time he'll cede those decisions to his handler.  With his intelligence, eagerness to please those he loves, and love of treats, it's been lovely to watch Stewie heal from the repair of his fractured leg that required months of crate confinement, followed by rehab, and the vitality of a young shepherd who finally could run and play and join his multiple foster families (he had four during his crate confinement) in long walks, play with the resident shepherds and learn to swim with them, then evolve into a potential candidate for Dock Diving since he loves to leap into the water, dunk his head in completely to fetch his toys out of the water.  Suppose you love training your dog, have excellent handling skills to provide structure and experience with shepherds or similar breeds, and are looking for a shepherd to continue developing your dog's obedience skills. In that case, Stewie is ready to be the devoted companion you have been searching for. In return, he would love a steady supply of balls, toys, especially squeaky ones, and many swim opportunities. Stewie's entirely crate and potty trained, has earned the right to sleep free, and shows himself trustworthy while his people are away without being crated. As months have progressed, he's even settled in the car, snoozing on the way to destinations for hours long rides. He's generally a quiet boy in the house, leaving it to his mates to bark at preceived critter prowlers in the yard at night and loud noises in the street.  Stewie enjoys many fruits and vegetables, including blueberries, bananas, oranges, apples, nectarines, cucumbers, and carrots. Generally, he's game to try any food you offer, including fan favorites of pumpkin, cottage cheese, and yogurt, to name a few. He had many filled Kongs, Toppls, and other enrichments during his long crate confinement. A slim and trim boy, Stewie loves his kibble and eats his meals with the resident dogs, sitting for his meals before eating from his bowl. Before heading to Canine Purpose for training, Stewie generally could honor sit, down, stay, leave it, come, wait, in bed, hop in, no.  Those skills were further refined during his training.  Stewie also started the initial stages of NACSW nosework training for enrichment during his long healing process. He enjoyed finding treats and kibble in boxes and other containers and on natural lawn objects like rocks, tree limbs, and lawn furniture.  We are grateful to UCDVMTH's Fracture Program for Rescues for allowing us the opportunity to repair his leg and to the shelter vet who brought his case to the attention of this program to avoid amputating his leg. Despite the pain of his fractured tibia at the ER and in the shelter, he was such a good-natured boy.  Stewie's care meant coordination amongst an extensive team, beginning with the ER staff at the hospital that treated him immediately after being hit by a car, the shelter vet and staff when he was surrendered for lack of funds to repair his leg, UCDVMTH veterinarians, and staff, and our rescue volunteers managing many details regarding transportation, medications, surgery and follow up visits including rehab consult with Integrative Medicine to develop the plan to ease him into full use of his leg.  All accomplished, a success story for everyone involved, including his multiple primary and relief foster homes, who have loved and cared for him.  Stewie is an active, energetic, and, at times, handful shepherd, so he'll thrive in a home where he can enjoy regular exercise and play. He'll be a great companion for someone who enjoys outdoor activities like hiking. He's loved hiking in Tahoe and is happy to put in four-plus miles on trails. He lives with multiple resident shepherds, adores the foster puppies who come through his foster home including them in play with his balls and mouthy games that go on forever, and has a couple of BFFs at Canine Purpose who match his play style. Stewie can be pushy/rude  in play and if paired with another dog will need a neutral dog as a companion. His current mates are very dog savvy, he respects the older dogs and plays well with the younger ones. Stewie has been adopted twice by folks who found his looks captivating, fell in love with and yet returned him within weeks before he could settle. They admitted to overlooking his true shepherd personality and guidance from his foster families and trainers. If you're interested in Stewie, please note that his fosters will be very selective after Stewie's two adoption experiences and will want to meet multiple times including with his trainers before commiting to launch Stewie to a forever home. He is very loved and would remain with his foster families permanently except one frequently travels for work and the other is at the permanent dog limit set by their animal control jurisdiction.  Take advantage of this opportunity to see if you are a match for this beautiful shepherd. Please select the adopt button and fill out an application for us to connect about Stewie.  As a foster-based rescue, ShepHeroes is always in need of fosters. An overwhelming number of shepherds in our local shelters need our help for a fresh start. Would you be willing to share your home and part of your summer to help shepherds find new families? You provide the love, and we’ll provide everything else! Saying “yes” today truly saves a life. Complete this  https://www.shepheroes.org/foster-form, and we’ll be in touch ASAP! We appreciate your consideration. ##1641104##

Plenty is an option for Foster To Adopt for a few days.   Plenty is a 1 year old Chihuahua x Italian Greyhound mix ready to show the world that Chihuahuas are the best dogs ever! Plenty came to our rescue with her sister, Good (for Licorice lovers you know this candy is the best). This gal has plenty of amazing qualities we will tell you all about further down the page, but trust us the list is neverending! Plenty has the biggest Dumbo ears ever and her heart is the same size! This lovely lady promises to make your life one of happiness with a side of Plenty of snuggles      Plenty is a friendly and loving little lady who can make any place her castle! She settled into her foster home quickly and befriended the resident dog. She loves stuffed toys with squeakers and would be thrilled to discover a toy box full of plushies in her forever home. Plenty is so loving and is the perfect pup for anyone seeking a constant companion. She’s happy to do whatever you want to do. Whether the agenda has cuddles, walks, or playtime on it, she’s down for it all! Plenty is also the perfect level of independent. If you need her to, she can keep herself occupied, but as soon as you’re done, she’s ready for more cuddles! Plenty is the best companion for a movie marathon as she will curl up on your lap and help you eat the snacks! Plenty loves her walks and adventures but also loves her naps. She’s pretty much down to model her day after whatever you need from her. How perfect! Plenty’s dream home is a family ready to show her all the love and affection she deserves. She loves lounging and cuddling but also loves hitting the block and trotting around the neighborhood. She’s totally up for it all! We know our gal has Plenty of adventures in her future!  Plenty wakes up around 8 AM and goes on her first walk for a potty break. She loves to sniff all the flowers and greet the neighbors. She tends to graze at her food throughout the day so she has constant access to kibble and water in the kitchen. During the day, Plenty loves to lounge on the soft surfaces in the house, often hopping from couch to bed to living room floor to get the best naps. In the evening, Plenty goes out on her long walk once the weather cools off. Once she returns, she cuddles with her foster mom on the couch as she watches TV and gets all the best cuddles. She goes out for one last potty and then curls up in her foster mom’s bed and drifts off to sleep.  Plenty gets along fabulously with her foster sibling and loves getting her zoomies out. She would be a great companion dog! She also loves humans of all ages. Plenty walks well on her harness and leash combo. Plenty is crate trained and potty trained. According to her foster, Plenty is one of her favorite foster pups of all time (but you didn’t hear it from us)! She has Plenty of love to give and she can’t wait to show you how amazing she is!      Plenty is an option for just about any home, regardless of prior dog owning experience. Kids in the home should be over the age of 6.December 23, 2024, 12:36 am

If you would like the first opportunity to adopt, please fill out an application to be considered.   Adoption Fee: $600   Pie is a 3 year old Norfolk Terrier x Poodle mix who is excited to serve up adorable cuteness for her forever family! Mama Pie was rescued from a hoarding situation and we quickly discovered she was very pregnant. Within a week of joining our rescue, she gave birth to four beautiful babies. Now that her babies are ready to find homes of their very own, we can’t wait to send Mama Pie off on her next adventure. This girl is so amazing and she has a fabulous permanent smile due to some missing teeth. Nothing to worry about, it just means she’s always ready for Tongue Out Tuesday! If you’re excited for pie season, come to the DPS bakery and adopt Mama Pie!      Pie is a sweet and loving gal with a gentle disposition and a heart of pure gold. She was very shut down and scared during her first few days but she slowly opened up and accepted pets. After two days, she showed us her cuddly personality and was eager to get all the love her foster people had for her. We promised that her forever home would be in for the best dog ever! Pie loves to follow her foster mom around the house, always on the hunt for cuddles and love. She is energetic but more in a people-centric way. She hasn’t quite figured out the whole “toy” thing yet. Pie’s dream is a home where somebody can give her tons of love and snuggles. She just wants to be part of the action and spend her days loving you. Pie is also super smart and food motivated, which makes her so fun to train. She’s also got such a goofy little smile with her tongue permanently hanging out of her mouth. She draws eyes and compliments wherever she goes! This sweet girl is the perfect addition to any household window sill, we promise!  Mama Pie wakes up around 7 AM and heads outside into the yard to start her day. Once she comes inside, she heads to her bowl and enjoys breakfast along with a treat. During the day, she tends to relax near her foster mom as she goes about her workday. She has access to the outdoors so she frequently goes out for some sunbathing and sniffing. She eats a snack around lunchtime and has dinner at 6 PM. She gets a short walk in the evening and then gets lots of snuggles and pets on the couch as she unwinds from her day. After one last potty trip outside, Mama Pie heads to her crate for the night.  Mama Pie gets along well with other dogs and draws confidence from well-rounded other dogs. She would be a fit for a home with current pets or as a solo dog. Pie is still learning how to “dog” but is house trained. Interested homes should be prepared to continue her training and socialization to build her confidence. Pie has been meeting more people every day and wins everyone over with her silly little smile. If you’re ready for the sweetest addition to your home, come scoop our Pie off the shelf today!      Mama Pie is an option for those with prior dog experience, even if the experience is dog sitting or family dogs. Kids should be over the age of 6.December 17, 2024, 5:07 am

Roadie is an option for Foster To Adopt for a few days. Roadie is a 9 month old GSD-Lab mix who we call our “Three Legged Wonder Dog”! Roadie was rescued from one of our shelter partners after he was struck by a car in a hit and run. He was in rough shape, but the shelter patched him up temporarily until we could save him. Our vet helped us determine that the best course forward was removing his leg, so Roadie became a 3-legged Road Warrior! This handsome dude hasn’t let that stop him from living life to the fullest in any way though! He weighs around 65 pounds and is the happiest puppy ever! If you’re ready for adventure and love, meet our Roadie!      Roadie is an outgoing, loving puppy who is ready to take on the world with a smile and a wagging tail. He is a cuddly and faithful dog who loves his people more than anything in the entire world. However, if you give him a toy he can easily keep himself company for as long as he needs. He is a total love bug and exemplifies the very best of the Lab breed that everyone knows and loves. Don’t let his missing leg fool you, this dude is excited to hit the trails, head to the beach, swim in a lake, or camp under the stars with you. He took to being a tri-pawd dog like a fish in water and never let it get him down. Roadie loves to show off his zoomies as he carries around whichever toy he picked for the day. He is a super dog with the heart of a lion! He loves every toy, he isn’t picky! He is also a total foodie and will chomp on whatever you give him, even ice! Roadie’s dream forever home is a family ready to love on him! He is a fabulous dog who will make a wonderful addition to the family lucky enough to bring him home.  Roadie starts his morning at 7 AM with a yawn and a stretch in his crate. He goes right outside for a potty break and then comes inside for breakfast and a treat. He is especially energetic in the morning so he spends some time showing off his fabulous zoomies. He either gets a morning walk or some playtime in the yard before he settles in for a nap on the couch as his people work. He gets a snack at lunch and then spends a few hours alternating between playing and napping. He has dinner at 6 PM followed by another walk once the weather cools down. In the evening, Roadie plays with his toys for a while as his foster people finish their day. He gets some cuddles and kisses on the couch as everyone settles down. After one last potty trip, Roadie heads to his crate around 10 PM for the night.  Roadie has been fostered with various dogs of different ages and sizes. He gets along with them and would love a playmate in his forever home. Roadie loves his walks but would benefit from continued leash training. He’s not quite aware of his strength so only adults should walk him at first. He would love to attend some training classes and socialization classes with his new people. Roadie is house trained and crate trained. Roadie is smart as well and has already learned some tricks! Bring home this wonder dog today!       Roadie is only an option for homes with experience in large breed dog ownership. Kids in the home should be over the age of 9.December 17, 2024, 5:07 am
