You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Hi … my name is Dillon! Read my bio to find out everything you need to know about me.   If you think I might be the perfect pup for you, go to www.allamericanmuttrescue.org/forms and complete the adoption application online. If you are not able to adopt, please consider donating to AAMR in my name to help with my extended care in rescue. Special needs pups are just that ... special ... and they just need special heroes to come to their rescue.  Have you tried on your hero cape lately? We don’t know a lot about Dillon's early life other than a Good Samaritan took him in to keep him safe after he appeared to have been abandoned on a rural road.  His Good Sam said he sat in one spot on the road for several days and appeared to be waiting for his ‘ride’ to come back to get him.  After about 4 days, he gave up and went looking for food and water, which he found in her garage! We do know that Dillon has some social anxiety issues and he can go from happy to distraught and nippy in situations with multiple people moving around in an area.  He has always done fine in his original foster home, but had a few 'incidents' in an adopting home, and he was returned to AAMR.  It is sad because Dillon is a very sweet and loving little guy ... until his anxiety takes over.  'Stranger Danger' is very real to him and in his mind, he needs to protect himself. We are not really sure of Dillon’s breed mix.  He has a dachshund-like body (long and low) with the head of a tiny yellow lab!  Dillon really deserves a family who wants to help him develop some confidence and some manners so he can be the lucky dog he is meant to be.  He is very excitable and vocal when left alone for too long and will not be the best apartment resident.  Dillon's wish list includes 1) a fenced yard, 2) an low-key, settled family willing to spend time with him and accept his limitations and 3) people to cuddle with every day who will teach him how to be the best boy ever.  Could that be you?Dillon does well with most other dogs, so having another confident, friendly dog in the home may be good for him.  Absolutely no children in the home.  If there are children visiting the home, it will be best to give Dillon a safe, out-of-the-way area to rest in his crate while the children are around.  They make him very anxious. Please read the rest of Dillon's bio below so you can learn more about him.Approximate age/birthdate: ~ early 2015 Weight/size:  ~25 lbs Housebroken:  YES ... as long as you do your part and let him outside often  Crate trained:  YES Personality:  happy, playful, guarded in new situations, wary of new people and animals, anxious about too much activity around him Energy level:  medium    Fenced yard required?:   YES – he definitely needs a safe place to run off excess energy.  A physical fence is required so someone could not just wander in and trigger his anxiety. Does he/she jump fences?  NO  Leash walk:  YES  Obedience training:  Yes, a previous owner took him to class and we know he is very smart. Riding in vehicles:  RIDES OK      Spayed/neutered:   YES Up-to-date on routine vaccinations:   YES Microchipped:   YES Social with other dogs:  Somewhat ... once properly introduced.  He gets excited when meeting new dogs and does not like dogs getting in his face.  He will growl if a new dog gets in his face.  Once he has time to properly meet a new dog, he generally does fine.    Social with cats:  Do not know … has not been around cats. We think he would chase them if they ran, but not sure if he would try to harm them. Good with children:  No Children ... he has nipped at children Adoption donation:  $175  We are an all-volunteer group, so please be patient and understand that it takes an average of 7-14 days to process the applications including reference checks, follow-up questions and home visits.  You can expedite the process by providing accurate email addresses for all your references.  Time to make phone calls is limited and we often have multiple applications in process.  We make every effort to move through them as quickly as possible.  When your application is approved, we will schedule a meet-and-greet to see if Dillon picks you too. If it seems that the adoption will be a good match for all, there is an adoption fee, and an adoption contract to be signed. Please email AAMR at weluvpups@hotmail.com if you have additional questions.  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 3, 2024, 1:59 pm

Story
Meet Charlie -- an almost 2 year old chiweenie that is full of personality! Charlie first came into our rescue as a 6 month old puppy that had been obtained answering a Craigslist ad when he was just 6 weeks old. Because poor Charlie was pulled from his litter too soon and perhaps because he was never properly socialized -- we have worked hard with Charlie in the last year on socalization and training as he has been fostered by a professional dog trainer (who happens to also be one of his biggest fans). Charlie is a total lovebug 99% of the time (and actually in the right home, 100% of the time) and just needs a good home prepared to offer him the structure he needs! Charlie loves his person and other dogs -- and even does well with cats. Charlie takes some time to warm up to new people and just needs someone that will give him space when it is needed. Charlie does have a previous bite history -- bites that are understandable when you understand how sensitive Charlie is in moments of stress and anxiety. Charlie LOVES to do zoomies and loves to play with other small dogs. He is quite the comedian! He has thrived with his trainer -- who will help with his transition into a new home and will be available to assist Charlie's new adopters. Charlie is housetrained, crate trained and leash trained -- and has learned so much during his training with his foster home. Because of Charlie's previous history, we think that it is best if he not go to a home with children under 10 years of age.  Ironically Charlie can be quite the life of the party -- and can make you laugh so hard! He makes silly sounds, entertains himself with toys and loves to snuggle up in your lap for snuggles. Some of his quirks might be lifelong (but let's be honest -- we all have our quirks). We are so hoping that Charlie's forever home is out there with a Charlie size hole in their heart. We know how much love this boy has to give and we are looking forward to finding that home that is seeking a "diamond in the ruff" that they can watch continue to bloom! Charlie is current on vetting, neutered and microchipped -- waiting on his forever home to pop up any day now! ##1789418##

Story
Meet Vito, a 6 year old chiweenie that found himself at the doors local animal shelter and not very happy about the situation!  You may recognize him - he was on the hunt for a family back in the Summer.  Vito is back because he is cute & moody.  He needs a savvy home that is familiar with the likings of a moody small dog.  But once Vito learns the rules and you earn his respect, he is a lovely housemate. Vito is a very loving boy.  He does enjoy his human & spending time together.  He is a great housemate!  But Vito's love can turn a smidge grumpy at times & his new family will need to navigate.  For example, Vito loves to sit & take up all the space on his foster mom's lap.  But when the smushfest is over, Vito may not be ready for it to end & can be grumpy in gaining his cooperation.  Vito's foster mom is currently using a leash to encourage him to do the things he needs to & the process is working beautifully.  She will happily teach you her techniques.  His foster mom reports he is responding positively to her rules! Put simply - Vito is a guy's guy.  Vito prefers the male in his home over everyone else.  He can co-exist with others but he will give his love & loyalty to his man friend & you will simply have to accept it!   To his make human, he will worship you - wait for you in your recliner, mope around waiting for you & then celebrate your arrival.  Vito is textbook man's best friend! Vito is calm and relaxed — and enjoys long walks.  He is a great walker but can be reactive on a leash toward other dogs.  This is manageable & with work, can diminish.  Vito does need a fenced backyard.  Some of his moodiness may be stored up energy & his foster mom believes a yard he can run in is best for him expending the energy.  Vito does enjoy walks and outings, but he may not be the dog that would enjoy many large social outings.  He will prefer the comfort of his home, his yard & his routine.   Vito gets along well with other dogs but prefers them to be more on his level of activity (quiet and calm) versus hyper and playful (though he has proven that at times he loves to do zoomies in the backyard).  He is being fostered with a very bossy female dachshund that is the leader of the pack - Vito Cooper does not challenge her & has learned his role! Vito has nipped before & some of his low grumbles are likely his form of communication, but because of this, we will not place him in a home with children under the age of 12.  Vito does grumble - sometimes it is just his way of saying hello and sometimes he is telling you he is not happy.  You learn his speech & if we are honest (granted we are not normal people here at DBPR!), we love a pup that communicates, so Vito's grumbling is endearing.  But his new family will need to earn his respect by setting boundaries for him & also allowing him to be himself.  It's a balance that we know can be reached.  Vito & his foster parents have struck this balance and will gladly show you the ropes. Vito is current on vaccines, heartworm negative and has been neutered with a full dental polish at the same time.  He is fostered on the NC coast so any perspective family will need to travel to the area.  We prefer adopters within a few hour radius of NC in neighboring states.  His adoption fee is $300.   Vito recognizes he is not the easiest kid to find a new home.  That reality does not upset him!  He always wanted us to remind you that you too are moody & grumble when people make you mad - so don't judge him!  But in all seriousnesses, we are seeking a savvy home that will accept his quirks & work with them; one that will have a human that is his pack leader & will set boundaries; and defintely one that will provide him the stability he has never had and love him endlessly.  Even the difficult ones are worth it! ##2099677##

Story
Meet Frankie -- one of our super seniors that is 13-15 years in age. Truly we do not know Frankie's age as he found us after being in a shelter. When Frankie first entered our rescue in early 2023, he was emaciated with horrible dental disease and fairly anemic. At that time Frankie's foster momma described him as "Happy Frankie Boy" because he was always wagging his tail. Frankie was soon adopted into a home and recently returned by his adopter when his more senior ways no longer fit her schedule. Frankie has certainly aged since he was with us but one thing is for sure -- he still loves to be close and will still wag his tail when he is happy! Just like any other senior dog -- Frankie has earned his right to be very decisive about when he wants attention. Frankie is a little wobbly when he walks so we believe he had a previous back injury that either resulted in a surgery or simply resolved leaving him with a signature "swagger"! Because of this injury (or just perhaps because Frankie is very decisive about what he wants), Frankie is not very comfortable being picked up. He prefers to keep his feet on the ground. In the times that his foster momma needs to pick him up, she simply (and calmly) reassures him, gently picks him up on both sides and lifts him to where he needs to get (generally it is up the step in the living room so that he can follow her around). He tolerates that just fine and knows she will be gentle. If she moves too fast, Frankie will snap to remind her he fears it might hurt. Frankie is also very decided about the time in his bed and when he is sleeping -- he does not want to be disturbed and will remind you that he will tell you when he wants your love! All in all, Frankie will definitely lead you to what he wants! Frankie is SUCH a sweet fellow. He loves to get scratches on his back and head -- and will even give kisses occasionally to tell you he truly appreciates your care. When his foster momma is working on the computer he sits on her feet to remind her that he is near. He loves to poke around in the yard -- being sure to not leave any leaf unturned. For the times when Frankie's foster family has to be away, Frankie isn't the biggest fan but he will settle in his dog bed and snooze the day away until they return. Frankie is not a fan of being busy -- he is long past his days of wanting romps at the dog park or long walks -- he prefers his home and his blanket filled bed (and his foster mom near). At night, Frankie sleeps in his dog bed through the night as long as you give him a night light (Frankie is afraid of the ghosts that dance in the dark apparently -- if you do not leave a light on, he will bark to remind you). Frankie is in the harder days of senior care -- his potty habits are not the best but belly bands help so much! Pooping isn't always on an outside target -- and he apologizes for that! But he can be kept on a good schedule to make his potty times more reliable so that you can take him out frequently. When Frankie is up and moving around, he will tell you he is ready to go outside by barking in an insistent manner at the door (any door will do)! Amazingly, Frankie is healthy for his age and not currently on any medication. He was put on heart meds when he first came into our rescue but at the time he was very skinny and anemic so it is thought that since he has regained weight and gotten healthy -- a heart murmur can no longer be detected so the heart medication has been stopped. We also do not think Frankie is in any pain, we simply think that he remembers that pain he was in at one time and he anticipates it when you move fast picking him up or bother him when he is sleeping. Frankie is find with other like-minded dogs -- he isn't going to play but he might lay with another senior dog from time to time. He certainly doesn't mind their company but prefers they not get in his face or attempt any shenanigans (Frankie is about old man games...not young kids tom-foolery). We are sad to have Frankie back but we know an angel out there reading has a special place in their home and heart for this sweet boy! He is a great companion on his terms and he loves to know you are around. Frankie needs: A quiet home (please no children as he truly has rules about when he wants to be touched and children often do not understand those rules). A home that is prepared to lift him when needed with the rules his foster mom has established (these are not hard rules to follow). A home with very few stairs as his wobbly gait has a tough time navigating stairs. A home prepared to love him until his final day -- even when that means caring for a sweet old man and his senior ways! We always hope that our adopters are prepared for senior days -- but in this case, Frankie always had us as his safety net (as do all of our dogs) when adoptive homes are no longer a fit. A home that understands you have to move at Frankie's pace, even when that means slowing down and taking time to explain to him that you will be gentle! We get that Frankie is well beyond his cute puppy days -- but he is no less deserving of deep love. His care is harder but far more rewarding when he comes and plops on your foot while you work at the computer to tell you he loves you! Our Frankie boy truly needs the most fabulous forever home! Because of his age and need for a super special home - Frankie's adoption fee has been waived. ##1656066##

Gretchen7.5 month chiweenie puppy13 poundsFostered in Raleigh Short list: Sweet, VERY active, Needs a playful dog, housetrained, cratetrained, likes to go for walks, pretty good on the leash for a puppy Looking for some fun in your life? Got a playful dog that needs a friend? Like to walk or hike? Then Gretchen is your girl. Gretchen LOVES to play. She will spend hours playing with other dogs, both big and small. We are looking for a family with a playful dog so she has a BFF and partner in crime. When she tires out the other dogs, then her human is her next favorite playmate. She will play fetch for as long as you will continue throwing the ball or toy. We always wear out before Gretchen. Toys, balls, squeekies, you name it and Gretchen will play with it. But when playtime is over, Gretchen is a great snuggle bunny. She wants to be right near you and keep you company. She will worm her way right into your lap and cuddle with you. She will keep you laughing and on your toes with her fun and silly antics. You will never be lonely with this girl in your life. This gal likes to go for walks so an active family would be great. She needs some work to be a pro at leash walking, but she’s pretty good for her age. And she loves to meet new friends – wagging her tail all the time. She’s still learning not to jump up on people so her new family will need to work on manners a bit. Gretchen is housetrained – so you get the puppy fun without the downside of puppyhood. She’s also cratetrained and does great with her foster mom’s working schedule. This adorable chiweenie puppy was surrendered to a rural shelter by her owners. They loved her to pieces, but her puppy energy was too much and she kept getting under their feet. Because Gretchen is the energize bunny and wants to be right near you, she wouldn’t be a fit for a family with any member that has mobility issues. Gretchen is UTD on shots, spayed, microchipped, and started on preventions. Her new family will need to drive to Raleigh to adopt her – to tranpsorts. We prefer to adopt to families within 3 to 4 hours from central NC. To get the process started, fill out an application at www.doxiebyproxy.org ##2239637##

Story
BenjiDachshund Beagle Mix9 years old23 poundsFostered in Fayetteville Short version: Friendly, housetrained, sleeps in big bed, good with dogs, could be an only dog, great with cats, snuggly, great with kids over 5, no apartments/condos Meet Benji, a sweet and loving 9-year-old Dachshund-Beagle mix who’s ready to make your holiday season extra special! This dude is simply an awesome dog that is a fit for almost any family. Benji’s heart is as big as his cuddles – he’s incredibly friendly and absolutely loves being the center of attention. If you aren’t giving him enough attention that he knows he deserves, then he will nudge you until you start loving on him. And when you come home from a long day – he will greet you with a dance and the cutest tail wag. He is almost always wagging his tai. Sadly, Benji lost his owner, and he’s now in rescue, waiting for a new family to love him. He may have experienced loss, but his kind spirit is as strong as ever. If you're looking for a loyal, loving, and easygoing companion to spend the holidays (and beyond) with, Benji is your guy! Whether it's snuggling up on the couch or lounging in a cozy spot by your side, Benji will make sure you're never alone. His favorite place to sleep? Right next to you, of course! He won’t settle for anything less than the comfort of being in bed with his human. And if you like sleeping in, the Benji is your perfect bed buddy – he’s not a morning dog and won’t be rousing you at the crack of dawn. Benji is a social guy who gets along with everyone – dogs, cats, kids – you name it! He would do great with a family with kids over five, but would be a great host to visiting smaller kids as well. He went to a Christmas festival and made so many new friends – everyone loved Benjii. His gentle, calm demeanor makes him an ideal companion for families or single pet owners alike. Plus, he’s already housetrained, so he’ll be a low-maintenance buddy for you. He’s not a fan of the crate, so his new family will need to work on crate training if that’s their prefernace. But he does just fine in a gated area or left out – he’s not one to get into mischief. Benjii is UTD on shots, neutered, heartworm negative, microchipped, and started on preventions. He had bloodwork (no issues) and a dental while in rescue. His new family will need to drive to Raleigh to adopt her – to transports. We prefer to adopt to families in NC, VA, SC, DC area, WV, eastern TN, northern GA, DC area and southern MD. To get the process started, fill out an application at www.doxiebyproxy.org Bring Benji home this holiday season and let him share his endless love with you. ##2242718##
