Story
Meet Copper – Your New Best Friend Awaits!Dear Potential Adopter,I am writing to introduce you to Copper, a delightful 7-year-old dachshund and Jack Russell mix who is in search of his forever home. Copper is a charming and unique companion with a personality that will undoubtedly warm your heart.Copper has had one loving owner and has lived harmoniously with another dog throughout his life. Though he has not been around cats, his easygoing nature with other dogs suggests he could adapt well to a new canine sibling. However, Copper has a particular need: he must go to a child-free home. He is quite afraid of children, so a calm, adult-only environment would be ideal for him.Despite his initial shyness, Copper’s affectionate side shines through once he feels safe. He adores snuggling under blankets and would love nothing more than to curl up on a comfy chair or nap in your lap. Copper is kennel trained and has a lot of energy; he enjoys running and playing in the yard, but a word of caution: make sure the gate is always secure, as he loves to dash off on adventures. One of Copper’s favorite pastimes is playing with tennis balls, and his playful spirit is matched by his love for relaxation. He’s a bundle of energy and joy, balanced by his quiet, cuddly moments. Copper is neutered, which makes him ready to transition seamlessly into your home.If you are looking for a loyal, energetic, and loving companion who will cherish cozy times as much as outdoor play, Copper could be the perfect fit for you. He is waiting for a special place where he can be himself and thrive in a safe, adult environment. Please consider giving Copper the chance to be part of your family. He is eager to share his love and companionship with someone who can provide the stable and nurturing home he deserves.Thank you for considering this wonderful dog. If you have any questions or would like to meet Copper, please don’t hesitate to reach out.Available dogs are met by appointment only and pre-approved adopters ONLY.Our dogs are currently in a foster homes which can answer your questions better than anyone else. We promise our fosters that we will qualify all potential adopters before we ask them to communicate with potential adopters. The application is the first step. Lady was dumped at a shelter in East Tennessee when her owner went into a nursing home, and no one in the family would take her. She is fine with other small dogs but prefers to be an only dog, but you must be a strong pack leader, as she was allowed to run the house when she was with her old owner. Lady does take a bit to warm up to strangers. She was scared to death when she came to us, but after she had time to decompress, she became a happy, lovely girl. Lady loves sleeping in her fluffy, calming bed but would prefer to be with you in your bed. She also loves to share the recliner for a nap or to catch the latest movie. This little lady will even play a bit if you have another small dog, but mostly, she wants to keep your lap warm. But first, you must give her time to learn that you are okay and she is safe. Lady doesn’t like the rain or snow, so a puppy pad would be best for those days when she cannot go outside. Our must-haves for sweet Lady include: A fenced yard Needs an experienced dachshund owner! Someone who is home most of the time Another adult, small dog for her to pal around with No apartments or high-rises, as she will bark at strange noises If you think you want to give this sweet, beautiful girl her forever home, please complete our online adoption application. We will contact you after we call your vet. ============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ============== AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. There will be an additional $60 fee added for a required Health Certificate if traveling out of the state in which they are being fostered. We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states.  If you have any issue with this, you will need to take this up with your legislatures. Since she has learned the layout of our home, nothing stops her. She has chosen a full-size blanket as her favorite possession. She drags it with her everywhere. Gretchen is full of energy and is so full of love. She is the sweetest girl, sleeps in the big bed, and loves a piece of ice to chew on. Please don’t let her disability scare you, sometimes I forget she is deaf and blind. Please email us, we would love to tell you about this sweet girl. BTW, Gretchen’s favorite blanket will be accompanying her to her forever home! Those two are inseparable. UPDATE FROM GRETCHEN'S FOSTER MOM (5/18/2024):  Gretchen has been in foster care for a little over a month now, and she is simply a joy. If you love a puppy, this is the girl for you! Gretchen loves to play, enjoys playing with her foster brother, and loves her babies (her stuffed toys). She has mastered my home and yard. And I am very comfortable taking her out. We are walking on a leash, but she scares easily out in the open. She has been to a restaurant on the boat and the golf course. Gretchen has melted even the cat lovers' hearts. We are helping her learn desired behaviors by using a spray bottle to get her attention. She is so smart and learns easily! Remember, Gretchen doesn’t need sympathy; all she needs is a family to love her and provide her with structure so she knows what to expect. Please contact her foster family with any questions. BIO:  Gretchen came from Alabama when she was turned in by her owner because she could not care for her blindness and deafness. Gretchen does not know she is special needs, all she knows is she is loving life. She is all puppy, so do not apply if you are not prepared and have experience training a puppy. We are going to recommend a book for anyone interested in adopting her called “Through A Dark Silence: Loving and Living with Your Blind and Deaf Dog” by Debbie Bauer. Gretchen loves attention! She is learning not to jump on people for attention or because she’s happy to see you. Some of this could be puppy energy, but it is something that will need to be worked on. She will potty outside if kept on a schedule or use puppy pads. It’s best if you have a very playful dog or puppy yourself so she has another dog to interact with and play with. She is VERY smart! She does well on a leash but does not like a crate. She will have no problem finding herself around your house or yard. If you are interested, please email her foster mom for more info.  ============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ============== AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime.
