Story
Introducing adorable little Bruno! This little man loves to give big kisses, snuggle with his humans, fall asleep in laps, burrow under the covers, and play chase! He is a lover through and through. And the KING of belly rubs. He is good with most people, ready to lick them all over and play the first time he meets them. He is scared of men and has shown aggression towards them in the past, so we recommend a home without men. Bruno does not get along well with other dogs. He wants to play with his furry friends but he does not know how to play friendly, and so he tends to get into scuffles with them. He would do well in a home without other dogs. Bruno LOVES food. Because of this, he learns tricks really quickly. He learned sit in as little as 3 days! He can tackle advanced puzzle toys and knows how to find all of his yummy rewards. Sometimes Bruno finds food or items outside that he is not allowed to eat, and humans must be careful when taking these things away. He sometimes guards his favorite resources with aggression, so would do well with an experienced family that is patient and can remain calm in these situations to avoid any escalation. Bruno is a highly intelligent and intuitive dog. He knows when he has done wrong and he learns very quickly to not repeat his mistakes. He listens when told to stop doing something (such as jumping on furniture, barking excessively, or pulling on his leash), and in a short time is able to correct his behavior. Bruno has his moments of energy and is capable of going on long walks, but is also perfectly happy with a lazy day to relax and take naps. He is comfortable in cars and behaves well during baths. Bruno would do well with experienced owners who are capable of working with his resource guarding and reactivity around other dogs because his heart is actually the most loving and friendly there ever was! Brunos human(s) will need the time and patience to undergo training - he is only 2 years old and has so much to learn about the world. Kids, men, and other dogs in the house are not recommended. We promised Bruno that the rest of his life, would be the best of his life. Story
Meet Dickens, a lively mixed breed with a zest for life! This adorable 15-lb. fur ball earned his name with his spirited antics: he's as cute as the dickens! Dickens can be playful and high energy and would thrive in a home with active adults and/or older children who can match his energy and enthusiasm. But don't worry; he knows how to hit the snooze button too. He'll happily curl up on your lap for a cozy nap or night's sleep. Speaking of laps, Dickens is selectively social with other dogs and can be a bit selfish about sharing his human’s affection with them. Being the only dog would be fine with him. Dickens definitely needs a securely fenced yard in which to exercise; life on a leash is not for him. And his independent (sometimes stubborn) nature means he doesn’t always come when called. We would like to place him in a quieter rural or suburban environment where he can be the king of his own backyard, rather than having to cope with city noises, traffic and crowds. If you're ready for a heaping helping of love, laughter, and cuddles, prepare to fall head over heels for this little bundle of joy. Dickens' adoption fee is $300. Story
Do long, low doggies make you smile? Meet Pretzel, a handsome 8-years-young male dachshund who is looking for his forever home. Well-mannered and house-trained, he can appear a bit aloof at first. But once he gets to know you, he’s a loyal companion who enjoys a gentle chin scratch and will happily curl up on the couch with you. Here are some things to know about this little guy: Demeanor. Pretzel is generally calm and quiet, but when it’s time to eat, he’s all barks, wiggles and tail wags. Food is definitely his love language!    Favorite activities. Pretzel enjoys a leisurely stroll on leash but is happiest when he is free to roam. He loves to sniff around and take in all the sights and sounds, so we will only place him with adopters who have a fenced yard. He also likes squeaky and stuffed toys (which he enjoys unstuffing) and snoozing on a comfy bed. Compability. Though he’s generally good with most dogs, Pretzel can be selectively social. If another dog has given him a hard time, he won’t forget it. (Anyone who has previously lived with a dachshund will know what we’re talking about.) On the other hand, he’s fine with cats because he was raised with a pack of Persians. Ideal home. Pretzel would thrive in a home with a mature individual or couple, with or without another dog. Older teens or grown children would be okay, but no youngsters, please. Also, a home with no or few stairs would be best because dachshunds are prone to back issues. For that same reason, it’s important that his adopters resist the temptation to overfeed him or constantly give him treats. An overweight dachshund is one that’s headed for major back problems. Right now, Pretzel weighs 11 lbs. and our vet says his body condition is “ideal.” Does Pretzel sound like a good fit for you? Email Save the Strays for our application. Story
This adorable short-legged pup is Miller. Miller is a 4-year-old Bassett Hound/Labrador Retriever Mix. Miller was surrendered to our rescue due to no fault of his own. He is house trained, crate trained, and walks well on a leash. He enjoys playing with other dogs and would do best in a home with another playful dog to help him get his energy out. Miller is recommended for a home without cats or farm animals since he does have a high prey drive. We promised Miller that the rest of his life, would be the best of his life.
