Story
A SHY BUT FRIENDLY FELLOW:  Approx. 9 years old / Approx. 14 lbs.  Hi, I’m Anton!  I came to Mostly Mutts from a home that had a lot of dogs! We needed help when our dad had to go into Hospice care, so Mostly Mutts was able to take me, and quite a few more into their program. Now I’m ready to find a new home and family of my very own!  I needed a good dental cleaning which I have received thanks to a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization! • OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS:  I haven’t met other dogs at Mostly Mutts yet, but I came in with other dogs that I’m a little bossy with. If you have a dog at home already, let’s meet! / Cats unknown. / I haven’t met kids yet at Mostly Mutts, so let’s meet and best no toddlers that I may fall on me.     • PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL:  My previous owner described me as a shy but sweet fellow.  The volunteers knew to just go slowly with me and sure enough, I warmed up pretty quickly.  I got the reputation of being the ‘boss of the doxies’ around the shelter.  I have a confidence about me and an energetic spirit you are sure to love.  You are also sure to love my sweet, gentle demeanor, which I displayed during my shelter bath – being a real trooper during a pretty thorough ear cleaning.  I’m also quite crafty and reportedly can scale a fence, making me a potential escape artist, so please don’t leave me in the yard unattended until you know that I will not leave.  I’ve gotten into some things that don’t belong to me in my foster home, even showing that I know how to open doors.  I need to be watched closely and not left unattended in the home until I understand what is expected of me.  / My energy level is 4-6. • SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY:  I am a student in the Mostly Mutts University training program and look forward to learning a lot with my trainer!  Check back soon to see what I've learned. / The crate is new to me, so I am working on that now - I get a bit anxious in there and have been having accidents while I’m in my crate.  My foster family is trying to make it a more comfortable/positive experience for me. At bedtime, I get to sleep with my fosters, and I love that!  I hope my new family will let me do this with them. /  I have good potty manners in my foster home while I am outside of my crate, however I potty in my crate.  My foster is working on this with me and is teaching me that my crate isn’t scary.  I also don’t like to potty outside when the grass is wet, so please be patient with me in this scenario.  Please continue to be consistent with me on a good schedule, so I can fully master my potty skills. • LIKES/DISLIKES:  As I warm up to you, I love to collect belly rubs.  I’m happiest with you - lying by your side on the couch or in bed!  Fuzzy blankets are the best, and I love to burrow into them for a nap.  I’ve not really shown interest in toys yet, but perhaps you can show me how much fun they can be. / I can’t think of any dislikes, though I’m sure I wouldn’t like it if I didn’t get enough love, attention, and training. • MEDICAL:  I'm current on vaccinations, micro-chipped and neutered.  I am currently taking an inexpensive anxiety medication to help me with the anxiety I experience when in my crate.  I also had a fatty mass removed and I’m healing up nicely from that now, and a good dental cleaning.  Since I'm a Dachshund, I naturally have a long back which is subject to injury, so please don't allow me to jump on and off furniture so we can keep me safe and healthy. I am looking for a great home with a loving family for life!  My adoption fee is $299.00, and I’m located in Kennesaw, Ga.  November 21, 2024, 6:31 am

SWEET, SHY & NEEDS PATIENCE:  Approx. 7 years old / Approx. 13 lbs. Hi, I’m Elsa!  I came to Mostly Mutts from a home that had a lot of dogs that weren’t properly socialized.  We needed help when our dad had to go into hospice care, so Mostly Mutts was able to take me, and quite a few other dogs into their program. Now I’m ready to find a new home and family of my own that understands my situation and will give me lots of time to settle into my new home.  I was adopted for 2 days but returned when I bit my mom over being picked up quickly when I just wasn’t ready for that, and I was so afraid. So, I need a family that will be patient with me and will give me lots of time to feel safe and secure in my new home.  I needed a good dental cleaning which I received thanks to a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization! • OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS:  I haven’t met other dogs at Mostly Mutts yet, but I came in with other dogs that I liked, so if you have a dog at home already, let’s meet! / Cats unknown. / I haven’t met kids at Mostly Mutts, but due to my fearful nature, and bite risk, Mostly Mutts recommends calm teenagers only, so if you have kids like this, let’s meet. • PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL:  I am very scared but also very sweet once you give me time to get comfortable with you.  Please don’t rush me, as I just wasn’t socialized properly in my previous home, so I need time to feel safe and comfortable with people.  Once comfortable, I seek out attention and am a friendly girl who is getting used to being loved.  I’m not used to being picked up, held and loved – but I am getting there with patience and not being rushed!  I’ve spent a good part of my life being a momma dog.  Now, I am looking forward to that being behind me and just being a loved family member! / My energy level is currently 3-5. • SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY:  I am a student in the Mostly Mutts University training program and look forward to learning a lot with my trainer!  Check back soon to see what I've learned. / I am new to the crate. / I've been having some accidents on the shelter schedule, so please continue to be consistent with me on a good schedule, so I can master my potty skills. • LIKES/DISLIKES:  Once I know and trust you, I enjoy neck and head rubs, and – though I am not interested in toys, I bet you can show me how much fun they can be. / I don’t want to be rushed into a relationship as I need extra time.  I would not be happy in a home with a lot of commotion or too many people coming and going as I need a nice quiet home.  I’m sure I wouldn’t like it if I didn’t get enough love, attention, and training once I feel at home. • MEDICAL:  I'm current on vaccinations, micro-chipped and spayed.  You’ll notice that my right pupil doesn’t contract properly.  It’s a congenital condition and I can see out of the eye with a little vision loss in that eye.  Since I'm a Dachshund, I naturally have a long back which is subject to injury, so please don't allow me to jump on and off furniture so we can keep me safe and healthy. I’m getting medicated baths twice a week for a little while to help with my skin and these can be done in my new home with patience.  (I’ve done well with these at MM with the bather who is kind and gentle with me and gives me time to get used to her.) I’ve started an anxiety medication to help me with the stress I’m feeling.   I am looking for a wonderful patient family to give me a living furever home!  My adoption fee is $299.00, and I’m located in Kennesaw, Ga.  December 18, 2024, 7:48 am

Story
Right? Can you EVEN with that sweet look on his face? Buddy Ross is a total nugget; we kind of love him - but yeah, we love them alllll, so there's that. Through no fault of his own, Buddy comes to DREAM after his previous owner became unable to care for him. He's been loved his whole life, and he has a lot of love to give. He enjoys playing with toys, and gets on well with other dogs. We aren't sure about cats. Buddy is a people dog, for sure. He loves grownups and kids, and he gets along with his canine foster brothers & sisters. He wants nothing more than to be in your lap, giving you kisses. His soulful eyes will make you feel like he sees and understands everything. Buddy is an Isabella dachshund (silvery blue fur) and like most Isabellas, he has some hair loss aka alopecia. He has grown some hair since coming to DREAM and being fed quality kibble. He has a section of fur on his neck that looks like a necktie. What a jaunty little guy! He doesn't take medicine for it, but would need sun protection like anyone else if he were exposed to the elements. Buddy Ross is NOT a fan of doggo sweaters but does enjoy snuggling in a bed and under a blanket. He's accustomed to using wee-pads to do his biznezz, but we're working on getting him used to the idea of fertilizing the grass instead of going inside. He's a champ at wearing belly bands which his foster mom refers to as his “gym shorts”. When he’s wearing his gym shorts he doesn’t wet them so maybe he just loves making a fashion statement?. He is also crate trained. Buddy loves squeaky toys and bones of all kinds. (He is also a sneaky thief of paper towels and napkins. 😅 The ideal home for Buddy would be someone who wants a constant companion. If you're looking for a friendly, low-key, playful, "your own little shadow" companion look no further than Buddy Ross. Complete an application right online. If you are interested in adopting Buddy Ross, you can fill out an application right on our website! Go to our online adoption application. Buddy Ross's adoption fee is $350. All adoption fees go directly to veterinary care for DREAM dachshunds. Buddy Ross will go to his new home microchipped, neutered, heartworm tested, up to date on vaccinations, and with all other medical needs addressed. We've also given him a dental for sweet kissy breath. Almost every dog's veterinary expenses exceed our adoption fees; we are a non-profit. DREAM is an all-volunteer rescue group. We focus on the metro Atlanta area and can assist throughout the state of Georgia. Since our rescue is entirely run and staffed by volunteers, our ability to travel long distances for adoptions is somewhat limited. We focus on Georgia, but if you are in a neighboring state, we might be able to work something out - we'll expect you to do your part. DREAM does not recommend purebred dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a doxie's back. Follow us on Instagram , Facebook and Twitter

Story
This may be the most unique profile you ever read. Yes, we say READ. Why? Well....we aren't going to show any pictures of this dog until you have. Intrigued yet? We hope so. Read on! The reason we want you to READ first is to get a good understanding of who this dog is....and NOT what he looks like. He is absolutely, positively adorable, and everyone instantly falls for him...but he is not for everyone. In fact, he is not for most. He has some serious health matters that most people won't take the time to read about or understand, much less be able to handle appropriately, simply because he's too cute. And these health matters are relatively easy to handle for the right person with the right attitude. Most just see tons of cuteness in front of them and instantly disregard everything else. He & DREAM can't afford for that to happen. We've spent a lot of time and effort (and financial resources) getting Dusty Britches back into good health, so we hope to truly inform you of him & his needs FIRST and then show you his photos later. We promise, you'll like them. So, let's dive in. Dusty Britches is a long-haired, neutered male, ~5+ years old (turns 6 in May.) Sweet as pie. Softest hair & most soulful eyes you've ever seen. He's a petite little guy. ~10 lbs, fluff and all. He came to us after his mom passed & his dad was no longer able to provide sufficient care for him. We quickly realized something was just not right with Dusty. He was constantly retching, massively anxious, and undiagnosed until he arrived at DREAM. To further complicate his matters, the anxiety also triggers his regurgitation. The vets confirmed our suspicions...he has both Megaesophagus (aka M.E.) and separation anxiety. Good news is he now has meds for both of these conditions. It's taken us a long time of working with Dusty to get here, but he's been so worth the effort. What is Megaesophagus? Good question. It's just as the name describes....Dusty Britches has a section in his throat (or esophagus) that is too large and causes some liquids and food to collect there, and not passing directly to the stomach. Dusty Britches has a team of specialists in this disease help to figure out where his irregularity is located (lower esophagus), that it is a mild situation compared to other M.E. dogs, and that it is now being well managed with 2 medications taken twice daily. Sildenafil helps constrict his throat muscles (making the enlarged place tighten up / get smaller prior to meal times) and Metoclopramide helps speed up digestion once food is in his stomach. These 2 meds have immensely improved his overall condition and have greatly minimized the amount of regurgitation he endures. The cost of these 2 meds is ~$12/month. M.E. also requires a fairly strict diet. Consistency is key. New foods or treats can aggravate his condition. We will share what has worked successfully with him, once we get to that stage with any applicant. Why is it important to control the regurg? Aspiration Pneumonia (aka A.P.) is the answer. It's something M.E. dogs become highly susceptible to. If he coughs up food that then enters the lungs, A.P. will occur...not "if" but "when" is always the case with foreign items entering the lungs. The substance, such as food, saliva, vomit, or medication, brings in bacteria which can cause the infection, and that bacteria quickly spreads. A.P. can be lethal if not treated, hence our desire to avoid it at all costs. And guess what? Since getting his meds figured out, we have not had any instances of A.P. Now let's chat about his separation anxiety. Dusty can be a nervous little guy at times...so much so that our vet recommended medication to help ease his worry. Dusty has proven once he bonds to you, he absolutely will adore you and HATES to be left alone. And his meds have helped this condition a bunch, but he has a lot of learned behaviors too. With that, we are seeking that loving & patient person who is willing to continue to work with Dusty on his behavior in a positive manner. DB would do best with 1 owner, or a partner that doesn't mind being "shunned" by him. Dusty just has a hard time bonding with more than 1 person at a time. He won't be aggressive to the others in a home - he will simply bark on occasion and run back to his 1 person. We've had him in multiple foster homes and he does well in all of them, but again, he relies on just 1 person in each home. And a crate at home is out of the question. He absolutely will not tolerate it, and it further aggravates his M.E. The only place he sits quietly in a crate in is at the vet's office. (Thank goodness for that - as he's spent much time there while he's been with us.) Fun fact - he's an EXCELLENT car rider. The car is a huge motivator & calming agent for him - he adores getting to go, lays right down, loves to sit while you shop or dine (proven Maxxinista - tee hee), and shows way more patience being in the car than he does waiting for someone to come home. But he can't go with us 24/7 & sometimes just has to stay at home. We give him a large hallway or bathroom (not the entire house), some soft music, and a soft bed to lay on. Sometimes he howls and cries. Sometimes he flings himself at the front door, but neither of these happens always. Sometimes, he's quiet & patient and just lays in his bed awaiting our return. Yep, we've seen it all on the Dusty-cam. ☺! To help Dusty with his anxiety, he takes another med for this. It too is twice daily, like the M.E. meds. It's a 1/2 tablet every 12 hours of Clomipramine and costs ~$40/mth. More fun facts about Dusty Britches. Dusty has a Bailey Chair (google it) that his foster parents made for him. Dusty is super easy to train b/c he is highly food motivated. He is also incredibly smart and eager to please. He took to his new chair with the greatest of ease. Dusty also knows a "wait" command. We use it for meal time so he doesn't rush the bowl. We also use it at the door to go outside. He LOVES to rush out the door to run thru the fenced-in yard. (He'd love for you to teach him more commands.) Dusty does enjoy sleeping in the big bed with his humans, even the partner he might be afraid of when out of the bed. He gives the best morning snuggles and wake-up kisses. Dusty really isn't into toys, but does love a good walk. Dusty also enjoys adventures like hiking or boat rides. Despite his anxiety, he really does love to go places with his people. Dusty just wants to please his person and get lots of reassurance that he's doing a good job. He now knows a "wait" command and we use it in many scenarios...like meal time, so he doesn't plow right into his food, or at the front door when we need to leave, so he doesn't try to go with us. He is known to run straight to the car door and beg to get in. Can you tell we've had a lot of fun with this boy, despite all we've had to work on? This boy is absolutely guaranteed to make you smile and want to give him the biggest hugs ever. He knows how to grab your heart and hold on tight. So...why do we share all this with you? It's because we want to set Dusty Britches up for success in his forever home. If you feel he is the type of dog for you, you don't mind the monthly financial commitment to his meds, you don't mind a little clean up from his M.E. and a little anxiety...then please apply for Dusty Britches. Once we receive your application and get thru the pre-screening process, we will then make contact with you, share lots of pictures, and start our next rounds of talks to see if he's still as good a match as you think he might be. We believe he's worth it, and for the right person, they will too. If you are interested in adopting Dusty Britches, you can fill out an application right on our website! Go to our online adoption application. Dusty Britches' adoption fee is $500. All adoption fees go directly to veterinary care for DREAM dachshunds. Story
Meet Boone, a gorgeous and super silly long haired red male, who also happens to be an IVDD survivor. He arrived with a back injury and has gone through surgery. He's still primarily paralyzed but does have some tiny movement in his legs. But don't let that fool you into thinking he's slowed down at all. HECK NO!!! This boy is a professional when it comes to scooting or asking to be carried...and he's up for just about any adventure you care to take him on. He adores the car and wants to be with his people all the time. His bladder does need to be expressed, which is ridiculously easy and not messy at all. Just a little press on his abdomen & wheeee....you're done. Let us show you how. It makes him the most perfectly house-trained dog. WIN!!! Honestly whether he walks or scoots, he's the happiest little camper ever. Mr. Social !!! He has a real zest for life and brings joy to everyone he meets. Boone does enjoy his wheelie cart but b/c he's got such good foot placement when supported, we are encouraging him to keep strengthening his leg muscles to stand. If you know DREAM, you know we never give up. Because thru dreams, most anything is possible. DREAM has helped dogs of all capability levels and we believe this guy is really easy to care for. Resource material is available for you to order as well. One of the original board members wrote this extremely helpful book about day to day life with a "down dog".... Story
Meet Ollie, the king of comebacks. Oooo-weeee!!!! This is a sweet one folks. Guard your hearts or come grab him quickly, cuz this 4-5 year old chocolate piebald is not hanging around with us for long. When Ollie first arrived (from a shelter & no records from his past), he was a FLAMING HOT MESS from tip to tail. His skin was completely irritated and all 4 paws were inflamed. His ears were infected and so was his mouth. Plus he had this huge mass on his chest. All in all, Ollie was long overdue for some medical and physical TLC, and we were very happy to oblige. Most of this is now a thing of the past. Ollie's dental went extremely well, and he actually had ZERO extractions - amazing for so much yuck in there. His mass is gone and his ears, paws & skin are healing up nicely. Also, he is on a hydrolyzed protein diet (we will explain when you apply) for the skin issues. This may be able to be eliminated in the future. WAY TO GO OLLIE!!! This is quite the rapid recovery for a dog that's been with us for ~ 4 weeks. Sweetness is Ollie's top character trait. He loves absolutely everyone he meets. He also enjoys toys....really really enjoys them. Since his feet don't hurt anymore, he's now wants to get up and play with the toys and the other dogs in the house. Check out the video with him romping with this foster fur sister! So much SUNSHINE! Also, Ollie is house-trained and will go to the door and bark to let you know he needs to go out. He prefers a scheduled routine, and once he learns it, he will adhere to it, but you've got to do your part as well. On a schedule, he does not have accidents in the house. And now that his feet don't hurt so much to walk anymore, he's much happier to go out when you ask him to, but he does like you to join him on his galivant around the yard. Ollie is a bigger boy, and while he maybe could lose another pound or so, he's closer to being a standard sized dachshund. Also, check out that adorable spot on the back of his neck. BOOP!!! You just want to kiss it. {SMOOCHIES} 😘 💋 If you are interested in adopting Ollie, you can fill out an application right on our website! Go to our online adoption application.
