Story
Oscar Everyone who looks at Oscar remarks on his handsome face and soulful eyes. This 17-lb, 4-5 year old neutered male “Chiweenie” mix was picked up as a stray and spent a month in the shelter before coming to GLAR. In the shelter he was very frightened and during his first days in his foster home he was not sure who he could trust. After he overcame his wariness, his personality started to shine through. His foster discovered that while Oscar may not be happy about new people reaching out to pat his head, he loves to be petted on his chest and neck, and will very firmly guide with his paw to petted “just there!” He is an enthusiastic eater, and is very food motivated, which makes it easier for him to learn new routines. Oscar gets along with other dogs, although he does want to get priority attention, so he may be happiest in a home without another dog. He’s untested around cats or children. He seems to be most anxious around men he doesn’t know, but with a bit of patience he learns that a man can be very nice. Oscar sleeps soundly and deeply in his crate, enjoys walks on a leash, sprinting around the backyard, meal time, and lots of naps. He will potty outside, but prefers to use a pad inside the house on rainy days. As a recently neutered adult male, he still retains some of his marking instinct, so his foster keeps a belly band on him inside for now. We are seeking a small, quiet household for Oscar. In the shelter it was noted that his head movements were odd. After confirming his overall health, he was taken to UC Davis for a neurological consult. The veterinarians think it likely that Oscar has a congenital issue that cannot be treated with medication, yet it’s possible for him to live as a normal dog. He also has some impaired hearing at the lower ranges. His quirky habits are mainly noticeable when he is anxious or very excited, and he's overall a happy little dog with lots of love to give his people. TL/DR: Neutered male | Dachshund x Chihuahua | 17 lbs | 4-5 years old | Microchipped | vaccinated www.gunterslegacy.org/foster www.gunterslegacy.org/adopt ##2241957##

Story
Jeff was adopted by my daughter for my mother. My mom is 86. Jeff is not good with other dogs and my mom has a 6lb dog who Jeff growls and lunges at. I took Jeff hoping my med sized dog would be less likely to be bullied. I was wrong. Jeff has been in my care for 3wks. He is housebroken, follows simple commands and will sleep in a crate. He does love leash walks hw will chase a ball but won't give it back. Jeff will guard whatever he deems his at the time. If in a cair and one of the other dogs walks by he stands and growls. Same with the dog bed. He is not food aggressive at all. I do not want to take him back to the shelter as I do see better behaviors then in the beginning. Jeff needs someone who is home most the day as he does cry when I'm at work. He is not crated when I'm working just at night.

Story
We found this sweet little guy a month ago. He was starving and covered in fleas. The vet said he's not microchipped and is about 5 years old. He’s a daschund mix about 8.5 pounds. He’s the sweetest and loves to cuddle. He gets very attached and knows he’s been rescued. We’ve been fostering him and working with him to heal and he’s now about 90% potty trained and has a routine. We also crate trained him in the night and he enjoys going in. He is not neutered. We named him George and he responds to his name now. He loves his walks too (he had not been walked before and had to learn what to do on a walk by observing our dog). While we’d love to keep George, he and our cat have butted heads a few times and unfortunately there is a lot of added stress as our other dog is also a rescue and very needy. He would do amazing with someone who is home often and he can cuddle and sit on their lap. We would not recommend a home with cats or small children. He does well with other dogs.

Story
For those who are up to a challenge, we are looking for an experienced foster/adopter who can help Hopper. Hopper is a special little guy who needs someone who can work with him and his issues. He has triggers that have lead to bites. He needs help working with someone who knows how to retrain his brain. Hopper is a quirky little guy who does love people, especially when they understand his quirks. Hopper is trustful of the person who cares for him and loves to cuddle and get belly rubs. He needs a person to understand his boundaries and that he gives love on his terms. He loves to run at full speed into rooms to greet everyone there. He is very food motivated. He does not like to be picked up and has a dislike of harnesses. He's getting better with allowing harnesses but needs more work on being desensitized to them. He needs someone who understands and accepts that he does not like being picked up, which is not really necessary. He's learned to use stairs to get up on the couch to sit next to you. At night, he's good in a kennel or on a dog bed. Hopper is good with other dogs who are his size. He's not too welcoming of bigger dogs but tolerates them to a point. He can be food protective so no trying to take away his bowl once he's eating (who would do that anyway?). Hopper is neutered, vaccinated and house trained (might mark in the beginning like most male dogs do). Please contact us if you can help Hopper. Our email is heartandhomerescueorg@gmail.com or call us at 951-708-0626.
