Story
Lola is a 9 year old brindle Chihuahua Daschund mix. When we first got her we did not have any children for two years and she was treated as our only child. We now have two toddlers and a newborn and the added responsibility of a dog who needs more attention than we can give her now weighs on us daily. She is a high energy dog who would love to go on walks, She would prefer to be in a more quiet home with less chaos/anxiety inducing activity going on around her. She is very anxious when in a crowd or when new people are over and the unpredictable nature of kids seems to scare her. Ideally we will find her a loving home with no children or other pets. We have all of her vet records/receipts from over the years.

Story
ABOUT FENRIS Calling all spicy Chihuahua lovers, meet the sassiest little man around! Fenris is a 4-year-old Chihuahua with some very big feelings (and even bigger opinions). He came to HAP when his owner could no longer keep him, and let’s just say… he is not impressed with shelter life. Fenris is clearly accustomed to the finer things, his ideal day includes wearing a cozy sweater and being carried around like the king he knows he is. While he can be nervous when meeting new people, he’s excellent at communicating when he needs space (boundaries? we love to see it). With time, patience, and a steady supply of tasty snacks, he warms up and transforms into a full-on stage ten clinger. We’ve seen glimpses of Fenris’s loving and playful side, and he’s looking for an adopter who will give him the time, respect, and understanding he needs to truly shine! **Fenris thinks other dogs are dirty and weird, so he is looking to be your only pet, non-negotiable. He also thinks children are loud and annoying, so calm adults are preferred for this king! If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! All household members, including children and other dogs, must come along for the meeting to make sure it's a good fit. If a match is made, we encourage same-day adoptions! Our adoption fees include the animals' spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, fecal testing, heartworm testing, and a small bag of food to get you started.

Meet Pluto 🐾 Please read the bio in full for answers to common questions. If you have a question not covered here, please email info@seniordoghaven.org. If interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application at https://seniordoghaven.org/adoption-process/. Because all of our dogs live in foster homes, meet-and-greets are scheduled only after a completed application is received. Adoptions must be within a reasonable distance of Wilmington, DE so our volunteers can conduct an in-person home visit. Pluto is a tiny but mighty super senior Chihuahua, estimated to be 14–16 years young and weighing in at just 10 pounds. This quiet little gentleman is the definition of low maintenance. He enjoys his independence, loves a cozy nap spot, and keeps life simple and calm. Pluto came to us as an owner surrender after his beloved human passed away. He spent nearly a year being shuffled among relatives before a caring family member reached out to give him the comfortable life he deserves. Since joining us, Pluto has received the medical care he needed, including a dental, neuter, and removal of his right eye due to a corneal rupture. He has been an independent little guy from the very beginning. Medically, Pluto has a high-grade heart murmur and arthritis, both of which are well-managed with monthly medications (Vetmedin approximately $75/month and gabapentin approximately $12/month). Because of his heart condition and advanced age, Pluto is considered a super senior whose remaining time may be shorter rather than longer — but he is currently stable and enjoying life at his own pace. Pluto is still polishing his housebreaking skills and does very well with pee pads and regular potty breaks every 4–6 hours. He does not do stairs and is not a leash walker (likely due to having had a less mobile owner in the past), and he absolutely despises car rides. The good news? He barely barks, is fine being handled, and is perfectly content lounging in his dog bed or quietly cruising around the house. He gets along with dogs, cats, and other animals, though he prefers to dine alone due to mild food guarding (he may growl if another dog approaches his bowl). Pluto would do best in a calm home, ideally with a senior or quiet household with older children or teens. He does not need a fenced yard and is perfectly fine being left in a room or large area when home alone. Pluto’s ideal person is someone who appreciates an independent, quirky little companion — a buddy who enjoys being near his people but still likes to do things on his own terms. If you are looking for a gentle, low-key friend to share quiet days and cozy nights, Pluto may just be your perfect match. 💙

Because all of our dogs live in foster homes, meet-and-greets are scheduled only after a completed application is received. Adoptions must be within a reasonable distance of Wilmington, DE so our volunteers can conduct an in-person home visit. Meet Hilo (HE-low) Hilo is a 13-year-old, 27-lb Chihuahua/Beagle mix looking for a calm home to spend his golden years. Don’t let his age fool you — this little guy still loves life, especially walks, toys, treats, and car rides. Hilo is fully housebroken, walks nicely on leash, and is a classic couch-potato companion who enjoys relaxing nearby. He likes to stay close to his person and will happily follow you from room to room like a loyal shadow, but he’s not overly clingy and prefers lounging beside you rather than being a lap dog. One of Hilo’s cutest habits is getting excited for walks — he’ll actually try to grab his jacket out of your hand because he can’t wait to go outside. He does well with other dogs, has minimal barking, and would do best with older kids due to his age. Hilo would thrive in a home with someone who is retired or works from home, where he can enjoy companionship, daily walks, and plenty of cozy nap spots. Hilo came to rescue as an owner surrender and was a bit overweight at intake, but he’s been doing great in foster care. As a precaution, he eats kidney-support food and takes a few routine supplements to keep him feeling his best. (Nexguard Plus | 3 month supply: $123.79, Wellactin supplement | 120 capsules: $24.99) His favorite things include toys, food, treats, walks, and car rides. Loud noises and storms aren’t his favorite, but a warm spot near the fireplace and a comfy bed make everything better. If you’re looking for a sweet, loyal companion who just wants to be near his people, Hilo may be the perfect match.
