Story
Meet Wendell! Wendell is 2 years old, 14 lbs, and a real heart-melter! This little guy is some kind of chihuahua mix with beautiful reddish spots. He is a little nervous when meeting new people and might try to hide under the nearest table, but once he's gotten acquainted with you, he'll be snuggled up in no time! He loves to play with stuffies and squeaky toys, chase squirrels in the yard, and go on walks. Wendell came to the pound with his sister and when his owner was identified, the owner took his sister home, but left Wendell behind. He stayed in the pound for two months, stuck in a wire cage almost 24/7. That was very difficult for Wendell because he loves people and cuddling so much. Fortunately, Needy Paws was able to tag him and he is now in a foster home, enjoying plenty of love. Because Wendell was stuck in a cage for so long, he gets very stressed when he has to be kenneled. The ideal home for him would not require him to stay in a kennel for a large portion of the day. He would be a great fit for someone who works from home or an active retiree. He is still working on potty training but making good progress, and now that he has been neutered, we expect him to continue improving. Even though he is a small dog, he would benefit from a home that would work with him on his doggie manners. For example, sometimes he will lightly "nibble" your hands when you are petting him, so the ideal home would continue reinforcing the lesson that when he nibbles, the petting stops. He would enjoy another small or medium dog in his adoptive home. He would also be fine with kids as long as they are gentle with him. We don't know if he has ever been around cats, but could cat-test him if needed. Wendell does not require a fenced yard if his adopter is able to take him on regular walks. If his adopter does have a fence, it needs to be very secure so that he cannot squeeze under it -- he has been known to squeeze under fences in pursuit of squirrels! Small dogs can live well into their teens, so please keep that in mind when planning for a future with Wendell. If Wendell sounds like your new best friend, apply to meet him today! If you are interested, complete the Adoption Application on our website at www.NeedyPaws.org and we will contact you. Adopters must live within an hour’s drive of St. Louis, MO. Wendell’s adoption fee is $275.00, which includes up-to-date vaccinations, heartworm testing and preventative, spay/neuter and microchip. We are a 100% foster-based rescue and all of our dogs live in approved foster homes. We are dedicated to finding the best Forever Homes, and will perform home visits and conduct veterinarian and reference checks for each potential adopter.
