Story
Penny is being fostered in PA. Hi, I’m Penny and I am searching for the perfect forever family. Let me tell you a little about myself in case that family might be you. I am about 9 years old, but young at heart. I love to cuddle, give kisses, and snuggle under blankets. I am very sweet, but not afraid to grumble a bit to express my feelings when necessary. My pretty long legs come in handy for several things. I enjoy dancing around on my back legs which often gets lots of attention. When I am picked up I get “crazy legs that go all over the place”, but then hold on tight with them while I am being carried by my human. Going up the stairs is a cinch all by myself but going down…no can do. My appetite is huge for a skinny girl, and I love to eat. A private dining quarters is a must if there are other pets in the house because I will gladly help them finish their meals if given the chance. In regard to business, I will take it outdoors, but in an emergency, I will use a wee pad like a good girl. In addition, I curl up in my bed right next to my foster mom while she is working at her desk and will stay there for hours. So, if you work from home, you can’t ask for a better office mate! BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.

Story
Nacho is being fostered in VA. Nacho, a beautiful, sweet, and smart chihuahua mix, was turned into a shelter in Virginia in early January 2024 after her owner was no longer able to care for her. After just a couple days in the shelter, she was pulled by the Blind Dog Rescue and is now in a Virginia BDRA foster home. Nacho was seriously ill when she arrived at her foster home. She was taken immediately to the vet and it was determined she has diabetes. She is now on insulin injections twice a day and she is doing much better (she is currently using Vetsulin). While her blood glucose levels are not always within range, she has been doing so great – she is active, eating well, no peeing or pooping inside, etc. – and seems very healthy. Periodically she will need a glucose curve completed, which can be done at the vet or can be done with a continuous glucose monitor at home. She is good with getting her insulin injections. She was very thin when she arrived at her foster home (7 pounds) but has gained some weight and now weighs about 10 pounds. She looks terrific! She can see some although may bump into things too; she does have bilateral cataracts and dry eye, and she is on Optimmune once a day to treat the dry eye. Optimmune is completely controlling the dry eye and she is a very good sport about this medicine being put into her eyes. She can hear well and seems to understand some words, including “out” when it is time for her to go outside for a walk in the yard. She has a grade I-II heart murmur that requires no treatment. Because she had rabies certificate from her prior owner that indicated she was not spayed, she was taken to the vet for her spay and, once she was under anesthesia and her belly was shaved, there was a faint scar just where a spay scar would be. The vet felt she has been spayed because of the scar and also because she has no mammary development which would have been typical for a dog who had not been altered. So, she got a dental done instead; she had her teeth cleaned and 7 teeth pulled and she made it through the procedure like a champ. Nacho has settled into her foster home. She learned the routine pretty quickly! She loves to eat; she is generally a quiet dog but just before mealtime she gets loud and, when she knows the food bowl is coming, her tail wags so hard as she turns in a circle. She is a little sad, though, that she is not allowed snacks since diabetic dogs should just eat twice a day; she loves to eat! She sleeps quietly through the night in an indoor pen. She is housetrained. She doesn’t mind the leash. She likes to be outside to walk around and smell all the smells. She can walk up and down the two steps that connect the deck to the yard but could have trouble walking up and down a flight of stairs; at her foster home, she is always on the first floor. When she is going to be picked up, she likes a pat on her head and to hear a few words from her foster parents first (instead of just picking her up without touching her and talking to her first); then she is glad to be picked up and she likes to be carried around. The person who adopts Nacho should be prepared to go slowly with her, especially at the beginning, until she knows the routine and the people in her home. She now loves attention from her foster parents, and especially loves her head and her belly rubbed. She also doesn’t mind sitting in a lap either! And she is excited to sit on the sofa in the evenings with her foster mom along with other dogs that live in her home. She also gets excited when her foster parents come home after being out of the house running errands. Nacho generally ignores the other dogs in the home but she has not liked it if one of them (the ones who are blind) bumps into her bed when she is in it. She also does not like it when they bump into her before mealtime when all the dogs are excited and moving around. So, she is kept separate from the other dogs in the foster home, although she sees them outside and may even get very close to them, and she ignores them. She also ignores them when she sees them at the gate that separates her room from their room. Nacho’s foster parents think she could be fine in a home with other dogs who can see (so they would not accidentally bump into her or her bed), but there is no guarantee of that, so she would be best as the only dog in the house. And she would love being the only dog so she would get all the attention! And, while she loves attention, she is also just fine taking a nap when her foster parents are busy. She loves to bury herself under the blankets so you can’t even tell she is there. She is interested in the smell of the family cat but does not try to chase her, and does not bark at her or seem upset about the cat. But Nacho has a very good nose on her, and can tell if the cat has walked by or if a strange dog has been in the yard and she will become alert and walk in the direction of the smell. Nacho would not be good in a home with young children. Young children tend to move quickly and unpredictably, and she may not be happy about that. Nacho is ready for the perfect forever home! If you think you might be able to provide the perfect home for Nacho, fill out an application today! If you have questions about what it might be like to live with a dog with diabetes, please speak with your vet. And please know it is not hard! And Nacho is worth the effort! And remember the Blind Dog Rescue can work out a transport to get Nacho to you (within reasonable distance). BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.

Story
Adoption Area: East Tennessee Riblet needs: -Professional belly rubber -Patient owner -No children -Calm and quiet adult home -Fenced yard -No cats Hello, my name is Riblet. I am a sweet 3-year-old, 11-lb male Chihuahua mix. I was rescued from the shelter life and prior to being in a shelter my story gets a little confusing. I am a very sweet boy and handsome. I love to have my belly rubbed. I may need a short period to adjust to my new family as I do not do well with strangers and will bark and growl but once I get acclimated I will be your best friend. I do pretty well with my house training and I am comfortable with using a doggy door to go into a fenced area. I do walk on a leash fine but have a lot of energy so a fenced yard will be best for me. My foster mom encourages me to sit on the couch so that she can put a leash on me as I try to get more belly rubs. I eat in a crate because I love to eat any food that I can get my paws on. I also sleep in a crate with very little whining but I would rather sleep in the big bed with my person. I am learning to take naps to calm down and to cuddle with my foster mom. I do well in a car but my foster mom says I have to sit in a booster seat, which I am getting accustomed to. I enjoy playing fetch and I am getting better at bringing back toys. I do ok with the other dogs in the house as long as they are not in my face too much. I would not mind having a home to myself because I love to get all the attention and belly rubs. I do chase the cat at my foster home so I would do better without cats in my forever home. Sometimes when I am running, I may hold up a rear leg. The vet has checked me out and he said I just have a slippy hock that lets my leg sometimes extend more than it should and there is really nothing to do for it. This does not slow me down and it is just the way I am built. Overall, I am a happy little Chihuahua mix. I enjoy following my foster mom around the house and will sleep in the office while she works. If you are in the kitchen though I will be right there with you because I love food. I’m neutered, microchipped, also up to date on my vaccines, flea and heartworm preventions. My adoption fee is $175. Don’t forget I’m looking for a professional belly rubber. If you think this could be you please contact my friends at SBRET.com and I could become your new best friend.

Story
Adoption Area: East Tennessee George needs: -Quiet adult home or one with children at least 10 years old -Someone who has experience with shy/skittish dogs -Another small to medium-sized dog to be his friend -Secure fenced backyard for potty breaks All about George: Hello - my name is George. I am a chihuahua mix, weigh 7 pounds, and estimated to be about 4 years old. My foster mom says I am super cute with a really sweet temperament. I came from a home with too many dogs and was probably not socialized much so I tend to be skittish with new people and new environments. When I first met my foster mom, I was very shy but I crave human attention so I went up to her and we've been friends ever since. I prefer my foster mom to my foster dad - I am a bit scared of him but I haven't been in my foster home too long. I am doing very well with house training. I do need a secure fenced yard for potty breaks. Because I am skittish with new people and might be a flight risk when I first arrive at my forever home, a secure fenced backyard is important. I get along great with other dogs. When I am not on my foster mom's lap, I curl up with the other dogs here. I sleep in a crate next to my foster mom's bed but I would prefer to sleep with my humans. I do well with car rides - I ride quietly buckled to a car seat. I am neutered, microchipped, current on vaccines and heartworm/flea prevention. I had a dental and did not lose any teeth! I have a slippy left knee cap but it does not bother me at all. I did great during my vet exam - I was clearly nervous but I sat still when the vet examined me and even let him clip my nails - they were all impressed! My adoption fee is $175.

Rocco has been in his foster for several weeks. He is a short-haired Chihuahua about three years old and weighs nine pounds. Rocco gets along well with the other two Chihuahuas in the home. He is sweet, energetic, and likes to cuddle with you on the sofa, and he is almost house-trained. He needs to go to a loving home with older children to give him plenty of attention. Rocco enjoys his toys and likes to dig them out of the toy box. He is an excellent eater and is very inquisitive. Introducing Sarah! Look at this adorable older gal. She is a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix around 9 years old. Poor Sarah was found on the Turnpike and rescued by a very kind person. Sarah has been in foster care where they have learned that she is very affectionate, loves children and is housebroken. Sarah appears to not like other dogs so she will do best as an only dog where she can receive all the love and attention she deserves. The sweet, kind spirit needs to find her new family quickly. She has so much love and joy to offer, it should not be wasted! Primary Color: Brown Weight: 15 Age: 9yrs 0mths 0wks

Story
Hi! My name is Benji! I am chihuahua mix, approx. 10 lbs. and one hot mess!! I am approx. 5 years old and a "tripod" that has had a tough time and looking for that special fur-ever home. I have that feisty chihuahua disposition and separation anxiety issues. I need a quiet, patient, mature couple that understands small dog behavior and would like to add me to their pack..I do best with a companion or 2 (or more?) that are my size...I do not do well around bigger dogs and do not care at all for cats. I am house trained and if you miss my "signals", I do very well with a pad. Because of my limitations, a level house with few stairs are best... Once I am settled and "part of the pack" I am very affectionate and seek love and snuggles. I will play with my pack mates and humans. I walk well in harness and lead but can get tire as might be expected. I travel well in the car and enjoy being carried in a sling. If you have spare love in your heart for me, please call 423-442-1015 to set up an appointment as I am in a foster home.

Story
Bree is being fostered in NJ. Her name is Bree but you could also call her Little Miss Perfect! Bree adjusted to her foster home with no problem and immediately found her way around and knew how to get our attention when she needs to go outside. She has the playfulness of a puppy - if you bring Bree into your family, have plenty of squeaky toys on hand. She loves to destroy them! Bree is also happy to sit on your lap or next to you as you relax. She enjoys "watching" TV and will bark if she hears a dog on the screen. She is also a good car rider. She is a well-mannered little girl who knows her manners, like to sit when receiving a treat. And she does expect a treat when she comes back inside from going potty. Bree mostly sleeps in her own dog bed at night, but will sometimes want to sleep in the bed next to someone. Since going blind, she can be reactive when another dog invades her space, or even if Bree invades their space. We've had a few spats but everyone has come out unharmed. It is best to feed Bree in her own space. Even though Bree is a senior dog, she has plenty of playful years ahead of her and will be a joy to any family who adopts her. BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.
