Please read the bio in full for answers to your questions. In the event you have a question that is not covered in the bio, please email info@seniordoghaven.org. If interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application which can be found at https://seniordoghaven.org/adoption-process/. Please note that because all of our dogs live in foster homes, we are unable to set up meetings with a dog unless we have a completed adoption application on file. Adoptions must be about an hour of Wilmington, DE in order for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in person home visit. MeetLula! Lula is a 9-year-old, 14 lb. Chihuahua who found herself alone and trembling at a city shelter. She barked out of fear and was quickly timestamped. We knew we had to help. Lula only required a spay and dental. Her biggest challenge has been learning to trust new people. Lula has a lot of love to give and needs only the right person to live her best life with. She needs to be the only pet in an adult-only home. Lula would love to live with a homebody that prefers a quiet life. We have to assume that she wasn’t treated with kindness in the past, so she is not a fan of strangers. Lula will bond fiercely to her chosen person though and stay by their side. (Or preferably in their lap!) Lula is fully housebroken and can also use a pee pad if necessary. She has good vision and hearing, has no problem with stairs, and loves to run, jump, and play with toys. Lula walks well on a leash but will bark and try to lunge at moving things. A quieter neighborhood or a fenced-in yard is ideal. Lula is very well behaved, so she has free roam of the house. Lula does struggle with resource guarding. She is very protective of what she feels is hers, including her person, and will bark and possibly snap if it is removed from her. Her foster family works with her on this, but her forever family will need to continue that work. Lula loves snuggling in bed and always has to have a toy with her. She doesn’t like rainy days and will cover herself with a blanket to make sure she stays cozy. Lula loves going in the car, running around, and is always good for a laugh. We know the right home is out there for her. Can it please be yours? Apply today! Our rescue is based out of individual’s homes and most of us have several rescues at once. Due to the fact that Lula needs to be the only pet, we would also be open to a fostering situation with an experienced dog owner that would enjoy working with her. In a fostering situation, Senior Dog Haven & Hospice would continue to cover her expenses. Any questions regarding her behavior or interest in fostering, please e-mail info@seniordoghaven.org

Please note that because all our dogs live in foster homes, we are unable to set up meetings with a dog unless we have a completed adoption application on file. Adoptions must be within a reasonable distance from Bridgeton, NJ for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in-person home visit. Meet Garnet! Garnet is an 8-year-old, 10lb, Chihuahua mix who was rescued from an overcrowded home. She had received little attention in her life and was very shut-down. Garnet was brought into our rescue and given time to decompress. She was then spayed and had 6 teeth removed. New things can make Garnet nervous and cause her to run. Her new home must be very secure and she will need to be leashed when outside (even in a fenced-in yard) until she bonds with her new owner. Garnet is fully potty trained and has good vision and hearing. She sleeps in a crate, can handle stairs, and walks well on a leash. Garnet gets along well with dogs and cats, but because she can startle easily, would prefer an adult-only, or older children home.  Once Garnet trusts you, her true personality will come alive. This amazing girl bonds strongly and follows her foster mom all over the house and she loves to be held and cuddled. Garnet would love if her person was home a lot or if there was another calm, confident dog in the house to keep her company. This silly dog will use her feet to paw for attention and tippy tap around when she’s happy. She performs zoomies in the yard and loves to be outside. Make sure to have a clothing budget though - this little pup loves her outfits! All Garnet needs is a patient owner who will give her time to feel safe. In return, she will give you unconditional love for the rest of her days. Please apply today!

Adoptions must be within a reasonable distance from Wilmington, DE for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in-person home visit. Meet Matilda! Matilda is a 14-year-old, 5 lb., Chihuahua mix who was found as a stray and brought to a crowded shelter. Scared and alone, she really needed a new beginning.  Matilda was brought into rescue and given time to decompress. She clearly wasn’t treated well before, because she is very afraid of people and will sometimes shake and cry. Matilda’s new owners will need to be super patient. Her ideal home would have another small, low-energy dog she can take comfort from and play with. Matilda came in with no hair and underweight. She has gained a pound and a half and now has some peach fuzz on her head.  Matilda had several teeth removed and was also treated for parasites. She has good vision and hearing, can handle a few stairs, and gets along well with dogs and cats. Matilda does well on a potty schedule and also uses pee pads, but like most seniors, she can have an occasional accident. Matilda doesn’t do well on a leash at this time, so a yard she can explore would be great. An adult-only, quiet home would be the best fit for this sweet girl. Matilda needs a dedicated owner that will let her have her independence, while showing her life can be amazing. She loves to eat, and does happy dances with other dogs. Matilda simply needs a little space, and a lot of love. This tiny pup deserves only the best in her golden years. Can it please be with you? Apply today!

Story
ABOUT MAGGIE Maggie is a 4-year-old Chihuahua seeking a calm home with adults. She came to HAP from a high-intake shelter in Georgia when they no longer had space for her. In true Chihuahua fashion, Maggie can be very fearful of new people and will let you know her thoughts. Despite her initial worries, she warms up with some patience and treats. **Maggie is currently in a foster home, available for adoption by appointment! If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! All household members, including children and other dogs, must come along for the meeting to make sure it's a good fit. If a match is made, we encourage same-day adoptions! Our adoption fees include the animals' spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, fecal testing, heartworm testing, and a small bag of food to get you started.

Story
ABOUT TOBEY Sweet Tobey is looking for a stress-free, relaxing home! Tobey is an 8-year-old chihuahua mix who would make the perfect lap dog. Tobey came to HAP from a high-intake shelter in Maryland, where he was at risk for euthanasia due to lack of space for him. When he arrived at HAP, Tobey was diagnosed with severe pneumonia, that unfortunately was resistant to multiple antibiotics. We ran several tests to determine the best course of treatment for this little guy. He was treated with an effective injectable antibiotic for about a month before he recovered. We sent Tobey for follow-up x-rays, as he had a lingering cough, which we suspected to be a collapsing trachea. His scans confirmed that Tobey had a collapsing trachea and chronic bronchitis. Thankfully, both of these conditions can be managed, providing Tobey with a pain-free life! He takes oral medications daily, which he has no problem eating with some wet food or peanut butter! Now that Tobey is pain-free, he has really blossomed with our staff and his true personality shines through. Tobey is very affectionate with people and gentle with respectful children. He LOVES playing with stuffed toys and will even toss them around for himself. Tobey spent a few weeks of his treatment in his own personal suite, in one of our meet-and-greet rooms. During this time, he loved having a crate and proved to be crate-trained overnight! **Due to Tobey's diagnosis, he should have limited exercise and only walk with a harness to alleviate pressure on his trachea, which is fairly easy to maintain as he is a laid-back guy. Despite shorter walks outside, Tobey is house-trained and will go potty on walks! If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire!
