Story
Dog Name: Duke Breed: Chihuahua mix Sex: Male Age: 2-4 years Weight: 10lbs Medical Needs: None Housebroken: Unknown. He has two foster siblings that need to go out on a regular basis and he seems to do ok on their schedule. If he can't be immediately supervised he's in his crate. He's only had a couple of accidents in his crate. Crate trained: Yes. He's had a couple of accidents, but the humans missed the cues. Beyond that he's usually pretty content in his crate and goes in easily. Good in the car: He's only ridden while crated, but there were no complaints. Good on a leash: He still needs a little work, but he's very cautious and aware of where you're feet are and does his best to stay out from under them. Energy level: Depends on the minute. Ready to go to sound asleep in 2.2 seconds. Overall he's pretty laid back. Need a fenced in yard: He will do fine with leash walks. He has a fenced yard at the foster house, but has never been given free run. He is considered a flight risk so extreme caution should be used in a fenced area. Dog Friendly: Small and medium dogs are his best friends. He's never been around a large dog that we're aware of. If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive home? He would be fine with it without another dog. Cat Friendly? Yes. The resident cats looked like fun toys until he got hissed at and then he realized it was best to leave them alone. Kid Friendly: Unknown. He has random bursts of wanting to play, but to our knowledge there have been no children in his life. If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them? Duke came from Georgia and lived in some pretty sad conditions. Ultimately, he was sprung free from all of the gross stuff he had been living in and now prances around like a big boss. He's not a huge fan of having his sides touched suddenly. He's not a picky eater and as long as you provide a lap, blanket or soft bed he will be your best friend. He truly is a gentleman and just wants to be loved. Story
ABOUT TOBEY Sweet Tobey is looking for a stress-free, relaxing home! Tobey is an 8-year-old chihuahua mix who would make the perfect lap dog. Tobey came to HAP from a high-intake shelter in Maryland, where he was at risk for euthanasia due to lack of space for him. When he arrived at HAP, Tobey was diagnosed with severe pneumonia, that unfortunately was resistant to multiple antibiotics. We ran several tests to determine the best course of treatment for this little guy. He was treated with an effective injectable antibiotic for about a month before he recovered. We sent Tobey for follow-up x-rays, as he had a lingering cough, which we suspected to be a collapsing trachea. His scans confirmed that Tobey had a collapsing trachea and chronic bronchitis. Thankfully, both of these conditions can be managed, providing Tobey with a pain-free life! He takes oral medications daily, which he has no problem eating with some wet food or peanut butter! Now that Tobey is pain-free, he has really blossomed with our staff and his true personality shines through. Tobey is very affectionate with people and gentle with respectful children. He LOVES playing with stuffed toys and will even toss them around for himself. Tobey spent a few weeks of his treatment in his own personal suite, in one of our meet-and-greet rooms. During this time, he loved having a crate and proved to be crate-trained overnight! **Due to Tobey's diagnosis, he should have limited exercise and only walk with a harness to alleviate pressure on his trachea, which is fairly easy to maintain as he is a laid-back guy. Despite shorter walks outside, Tobey is house-trained and will go potty on walks! Tobey would also due best in a home as the only dog so he can soak up all the love and attention!
