Story
Meet Sofie, a 10-year-old chubby Chihuahua gal who was surrendered when her owner became ill. She is friendly, enjoys being petted, and will seek attention. If the weather is nice, she loves to be outside hanging out on the deck. Otherwise, she is a couch potato. She LOVES being with people & will always nuzzle up to you on the couch or find her way onto your lap. Foster mom says that she can never sit on the couch without Sofie being beside her. Sofie now weighs 24 pounds after having lost 8 pounds since being rescued - she looks great! She is spayed, microchipped and up to date on her vaccines. Sofie loves people and enjoys visitors to the house. She is good with the young family members (ages 2, 3, & 5 years of age) who visit frequently. Sofie loves her toys and is good at keeping herself busy. Sofie has been around other dogs and cats in the past and currently lives with two other dogs and a cat with no issues. She is very easy-going and enjoys hanging out with the group. Sofie is also good on leash, easy to handle and would make a great addition to any home. She's housetrained and good in a crate, too! She knows some basic commands like Sit, Come, Stay, Down & Shake. We feel that she would make a good pet for just about any home.  If you feel like you would like to bring Sofie into your home, please fill out an adoption application at www.northstarpets.org and ask for her by name, SOFIE NJ. The adoption fee for Sofie is $250.December 8, 2024, 5:59 pm

Story
“EMBRACE THE IMPERFECTION” Good morning, boys and girls. My name is Seren. I am a 3-year-old Chihuahua/Terrier mix and found myself pregnant on the streets of Texas. I am happy to announce that on March 10, 2024, I gave birth to four healthy puppies, all of which have since found their forever homes. I’m currently residing with multiple dogs, however, I do get a little jealous when other dogs approach my human. So although I would be great in a home with other dogs, I would also be OK in a home as the only princess. I don’t want to live in the past so I would prefer not to discuss my life previous to NorthStar Pet Rescue, but I am a little untrusting of people at first. As a result, I would do best in an adult only household with slow introductions to visitors. I would do best in a home with someone who is dog savvy, only because I do get nervous and need someone that is going to be understanding and patient. I am house trained, I am not destructive, and I am a fun, quirky, little girl who will make you laugh every day.    I know I may not be perfect, and I may have flaws, but my motto is “Embrace the imperfection”.   If you are interested in meeting me, please swipe left… or is it swipe right? In any event, please fill out an adoption application at www.northstarpets.org and ask for MEEEEEE - SEREN TX! And my adoption fee is $425! November 3, 2024, 7:59 pm

Story
Little Mavis was whisked to safety by NorthStar on her final day at a Texas kill shelter! She is now in a loving foster home where she is learning what it's like to be loved. Mavis is 14 years old and weighs about 8 pounds. She gets along with both cats and dogs.  Foster mom says Mavis is 95% housebroken as long as she has lots of opportunities to go outside - only accidents are overnight - she doesn’t make noise when she gets up so I never hear her walking around. Best way to describe Mavis is that she is affectionate from a distance. She always wants to be close by but is still learning how to accept attention. She likes to be held for very short periods of time, then she wants to be put down. She prefers being on a bed on the floor - she still doesn’t know what to do if I put her on my lap.  Mavis is slowly getting better at accepting attention from people she doesn’t know but her new family will need to be patient with her. She is not grumpy unless you try to touch her before she’s ready. Foster mom can pet her anytime - in fact, she looks for attention from her. But she wasn’t always like that. I honestly believe she was never shown kindness before - so she tends to be super skeptical until you prove otherwise.  Mavis should not be placed in a home with young kids. Older, respectful ones who know not to touch her would be okay. She will be looking for people who have the patience to win her over & who will love her. If you're interested in meeting this little senior gal, please fill out an adoption application at www.northstarpets.org and ask for her by name, MAVIS TX! Mavis is spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccines. The adoption fee for this senior girl is $250. December 14, 2024, 6:57 pm

Story
Meet Chip (brown) and Mouse (black)!!!  These two wonderful boys are being re-homed because their owners can no longer care for them.  These 2 boys are 3 years old and have lived together their entire lives and depend on each other so they MUST be adopted together.  NOTE:  Chip and Mouse are NOT NorthStar Pet Rescue dogs.  NorthStar is helping to network them for a suitable home.  NorthStar does not guarantee the accuracy of this listing and applications will be sent to the owner to respond to.  Mouse is 3 years old, weighs 24 lbs, and has black and white fur. Chip is 3 years old, weighs 14 lbs, and has light brown fur. As a puppy Mouse was found in a kennel with his siblings in a neglectful hoarding situation. He had never been allowed outside, leading to him having severe anxiety and fearfulness of loud noises and of going outside. He currently only leaves the house for vet appts and goes potty inside on pads. He also has some minor allergy/skin issues that are treated as needed. Aside from these issues, Mouse is an absolutely adorable, sweet, playful, hilarious dog who really loves to play and have little zoomies in the house. He also loves to cuddle and receive lots of belly rubs. We also have never heard him bark once - he will sometimes let out a little cry when you get home after a long day. Despite his anxiety about going outside he's made sooo much progress since we first got him and is a totally different, much happier dog. He's especially so much happier since getting his brother Chip who he depends on for comfort and guidance.    Chip is a really great, affectionate, easy to please dog who's only issue is some reactiveness/barking with strangers and other dogs. He doesn't have any anxiety or issues with going outside he can be taken out and walked as normal, just wouldn't recommend dog parks. He loves going on long walks and being outside, however he's not the type of dog you can take to a park and just relax with he prefers to be walking and moving. Once he's inside, he's very calm and chill and just happy to be at Mouse's side and giving us all lots of kisses.    It's really important that they're adopted together because this transition will be hard for both of them, but especially for Mouse and we think he'll struggle to adjust a lot more without Chip. They really love each other a lot and are nearly attached at the hip most times. We wouldn't recommend a home with cats and would suggest a home with older kids if any. Chip would be happy to play and run around with them, but Mouse definitely would require kids who can respect his boundaries and be gentle with him. We think they would do best with an experienced, patient, loving, and supportive owner who lives in a quiet home and neighborhood, and has a fenced in secure yard. They will both need further training and support, Mouse for his anxiety and Chip for his reactivity. We think Mouse would eventually be okay with going outside in a yard, it's just been harder for us to try because their owner lives in an apartment in a busy neighborhood. But we truly think they can both thrive in the right home. They're such good boys and just really sweet, gentle, loving, silly, and affectionate dogs who we know will fill someone's home with so much more joy, love, and laughter as they have ours.     Both dogs are neutered, microchipped, house trained, crate trained, and up to date on vaccines. If you are interested in taking this duo into your home, please submit an adoption application to www.northstarpets.org and ask for XP CHIP & MOUSE - BONDED PAIR!November 3, 2024, 7:59 pm

Story
A little Chihuahua with a nubbin of a tail sat in a Texas shelter up until she was about to give birth. NorthStar heard about Triscuit's situation - they whisked her out of the shelter & had her flown to NJ to a wonderful maternity foster! This little gal is about 2 years old, weighs under 10 pounds. On 10/3/2024, Triscuit gave birth to 5 beautiful babies - 4 girls and one boy - known as "The Cracker Crew" because they are named after different types of crackers! Unfortunately, Triscuit also tested positive for heartworm. She has officially weaned her puppies and is available for adoption. She will begin her heartworm treatment at NorthStar's veterinarian but can be adopted out during treatment.  If ever a sweet little mama deserved a happy ending, it's Triscuit! Triscuit's foster mom tells us this girl gets along fine with both dogs and cats. She is sweet but timid, seems to be mostly housetrained and is fine in a crate. She will need a little work on her leash skills though. If you'd like to meet Triscuit in the hopes of bringing her into your family, please complete an adoption application at www.northstarpets.org and be sure to ask for TRISCUIT TX! Her adoption fee is $425 after she has been spayed.December 12, 2024, 2:48 pm

Story
Eber is a happy-go-lucky, friendly young Chihuahua boy who weighs about 17 pounds.  He is a well rounded fellow - people friendly, small dog friendly, and he did great (non reactive) when he met a cat and some larger dogs on leash. Eber has not been intimidated by anything he’s had happen while in foster. He loves walks, and human affection and plays with toys. He did fine with his nail trim, tolerated the bathing. He even takes treats gently (if eagerly!) He is crate trained, and house trained!   In foster Eber is only confined to his crate if his foster mom is sleeping, or away from the house. Mostly she has to place him in his crate because he would rather be out of it…Sometimes he chooses to be in his crate on his own, especially if his mom hollers “No!” at another dog.  Usually he seeks his crate on his own at night, and his foster mom just shuts the door. He is quiet in the crate & does not fuss at all once he is in. He comes out of his crate each morning wagging his tail so hard that it wags his whole body!   The most heartwarming thing about Eber is his happy attitude and friendliness to all. It’s also heartbreaking because Eber has a broken tail tip, and a rib that “sticks out a little funny”…almost certainly someone hurt him.  Yet he is just the NICEST GUY, ever.  Eber is not a barker, but will let out a “woof” or two if the other dogs are all barking at something. He has some little quirks that are funny/cute. One of them is when he really wants to see something closer, and the person holding his leash doesn’t move that way, he will pogo jump straight up and give a little excited “yip”.  Twice it was just a perfectly tall weed in the edge of the yard that he likes to pee on! He doesn’t pull much on the leash when this happens, so it’s cute-not annoying. He doesn’t pull HARD on the leash at any time, but he does pull some. He’s young and eager to see what’s around the next bend of the trail.   There are more endearing Eber stories, from his weeks in foster, but this bio is already getting long with all the good things to say about this dog.  Please!  Someone GOOD and KIND apply to adopt this wonderful guy!  No one deserves a forever home more than this charming and sweet little brown dog. Life has not been kind to Eber; he will be SO glad to be in a loving home at last.   If you are interested in adopting this sweet boy, please complete an adoption application at www.northstarpets.org and ask for EBER TX! His adoption fee is $425. Eber will be neutered, microchipped and fully vaccinated before heading to his new home!December 13, 2024, 4:19 pm

Shrimp is just his name - a little itty bitty shrimp! This chi mix is a total lap dog. Shrimp is only 5lbs at  5-6 months old. Shrimp loves to cuddle on the couch or in blankets. He is wonderful with people and other dogs. In fact, he would do best in a home with another dog to keep him company. Shrimp is working on house training but he is crate trained. Due to his size, we would not put him in a home with small children.  Shrimp is microchipped, up to date on vaccines and neutered. His adoption fee is $415. Story
Mickey is a snuggle bunny who LOVES blankets and considers naps to be his favorite pastime! He is a Chihuahua mix, born on 10/22/17, who weighs only 12 lbs. He is neutered and all vaccinations are up to date. He is originally from Philadelphia but has been living in Hackettstown, NJ, since he was about 9 weeks old.  Mickey is a friendly dog who enjoys running around in the backyard (his happy place). He likes playing fetch mostly with a ball (small or large). His favorite toys are doggie tennis balls. While sitting on the couch he likes to either sit next to someone or on their lap (sometimes he even watches TV). Mickey hasn’t been around too many dogs but when he was with other dogs he would bark at them and then hang out so we feel that he would get used to having a canine buddy. Mickey hasn't met any cats. He is good with kids as long as they are older and respectful of him. Mickey is housetrained but is not crated when left alone. His family crated him until he was one and then no more after that because he is a good boy in the house. He likes walks and can walk with a leash but prefers a backyard to explore. He likes to walk around in the snow (especially when there is a snow mound). But when it is warm weather you will find him sunbathing in the hot sun on the grass. He is good in the car as long as he has his blankie or a toy.  Mickey is NOT an 11th Hour Rescue dog but we are helping to network him for a new home. If you are interested in meeting this little lap dog (he's great for snuggling on these cold nights!) please contact Melissa at melissa.martucci@comcast.net - this is a great little dog & he will make someone very happy as their companion!December 5, 2024, 10:44 am

Story
Allergic to cats but always dreamed of adopting one? Here is your perfect feral street cat in a dog’s body! Moe is a middle aged chi mix who originally came from a hoarding situation where he was clearly never ever touched. Probably even by his owner. He’s been in a great foster for a while and has made tremendous progress, but he needs someone who will accept him for who he is, and will probably never be the type of dog who will run over asking to be picked up and cuddled or greeting strangers at the door happily. Well, maybe 10 years from now when he’s blind, deaf, and arthritic he won’t mind being held and cuddled, but he’s a long way off from that. He thrives on routine and following his “pack” of doggie friends around. He actually seems to prefer the man of the house and will finally lay by him and allow some petting, but is still terrified of being leashed and most handling. He runs around happily wagging his tail, playing with the other dogs and loves his life as long as his limits are respected and is hoping to find a permanent pack where the dogs outnumber the humans in the household and he won’t be under pressure to conform to societal norms of how a dog should act. If you too would rather be surrounded by dogs than people, and don’t mind having another little furry member following you around at snack time and watching the world go by perched on your couch, email njwoof@cs.com to meet Moe in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. Story
Meet Kipper! This 6 year old chi mix was unceremoniously surrendered to the local pound, infested with fleas 🤢. Moving, financial issues, too protective, a bunch of different reasons given that they just couldn’t keep him anymore 🤷‍♀️. He was terrified surrounded by big barking dogs, though with his big brown eyes he always has a bewildered expression. Chihuahuas are so loyal and committed to their people so being alone in the big scary world is especially traumatic, but he’s warming up. He’s a typical undersocialized chi who isn’t passing any temperament tests or running up and kissing strangers but once he trusts he’s a sweet boy with those he loves. He is 8.5 lbs and looks like a longhair chi maybe mixed with some Pom or Papillon with a soft plush coat. He’s looking for a calmer adult home that understands protective nervous chi and their limits and will gradually socialize him in a positive way to new people and places. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Kipper in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. Story
Oakley, is a very social, sweet, adorable little male Pomeranian that loves to be held and loves to snuggle. This 5-pound little guy was born on 11/19/21. He was born with malformed knees, also called stifles, which cause him to move with somewhat lowered hindquarters like he is getting ready to sit or squat. However, this does not slow him down and when he hears his name called, he comes running. Oakley is up to date on vaccinations, neutered, microchipped, had a dental, tested heartworm negative and is being kept on heartworm and flea & tick prevention to maintain his good health. Due to his small size he will not be considered for homes with small children. Oakley is located in Arkansas. His adoption donation is $600 which includes the $165 transport fee. If you would like to adopt Oakley, please complete the first step in the adoption process by filling out an online adoption application. You can find a copy of that application here.
