Story
Meet Tootie, an approximately 7 year old, 8 pound chihuahua who appreciates the finer things in life like soft beds, warm sunny spots, sitting on a lap or being carried around by her person! She would make a lovely companion to someone who lives a quieter life, who maybe enjoys gardening or other at-home activities; she loves being out in the yard keeping an eye on the squirrels while you work on projects. Tootie is fairly independent and doesn’t beg for attention, but will happily accept affection and loves to snuggle on the couch. She currently shares a home with cats and does well coexisting with them. She would thrive as an only pet in the home, but could potentially live with another smaller dog so long as it’s calm like her, as she doesn’t appreciate riffraff and isn’t looking to make new friends. She really just wants to be ignored by other animals, and be doted on by “her people”. Tootie is up to date on vaccines, spayed, microchipped and her adoption fee is $175. ##2348457##

Story
Meet Sassy – A Sweet Soul Ready for a Fresh Start! Sassy is a loving and resilient 7-year-old girl who is slowly blossoming into a friendly, engaging companion. She came to us after her owner moved into a nursing home, and over the past two months, we’ve had the joy of getting to know her unique personality and specific needs. Sassy arrived overweight, which has been tough on her joints, but she’s making great progress! She absolutely loves her daily walks and needs an adopter who will help her continue her weight loss journey with plenty of exercise and a carefully measured diet. Her ideal weight is around 6-7 pounds, and she’s already working hard to get there. An adopter must be willing and able to take her on daily walks at a minimum. She has worked up to 20-minute walks with her foster mom. Though she’s naturally a bit shy in new situations, Sassy is gaining confidence every day. With the help of a behavioral trainer, we’ve developed a simple, positive-reinforcement plan to help her feel more secure. She’s responding beautifully and has started engaging more with her foster family. Sassy is also on an inexpensive daily medication ($10/month) to prevent seizures, and since starting it, she’s been completely seizure-free! She’s a smart, affectionate girl who loves her people and has lived harmoniously with other small dogs and cats. She is also fully housebroken. The ideal home for Sassy would be with a patient, dog-savvy owner who can continue to support her confidence and health journey. Due to her shy nature, a quieter home without young children would be best. If you’re looking for a sweet, devoted companion and are ready to help Sassy live her best life, she’d love to meet you! Name: Rex Gender: Male Breed Guess: Chihuahua Mix Age: 5 years old Weight Guess: 8-10 pounds Cats: Yes Children: No Dogs: Yes, requires a dog companion. . Meet and Greet Required Adoption fee: $350 Hello! I'm a timid guy who takes time to bond with people, but I promise I'm worth the wait! I recently lost my person of many years and I'm still feeling a little sad about it. Right now, I find the most comfort in other dogs - I do great with cats, but having another dog around gives me confidence and makes me happy. I understand that people take care of my needs, but for now, I prefer bonding with my four-legged friends first. I need a quiet and patient home because quick movements and loud noises can scare me. I'm still working on potty training - I know to go outside, but I need a good schedule to avoid accidents. Speaking of the outdoors, I love being outside, but I'm an extreme flight risk. I need someone who is slow and gentle with me, but can also react quickly if I become spooked. A fully fenced in yard is ideal, but even then, I should be leashed at first - if I run, you will have a hard time catching me! When it comes to food, I'm a bit picky. Dry food isn't really my thing, but wet food and hot dogs - now you're speaking my language! Once I start to trust you, I absolutely love car rides, especially when I can look out the window and take in the world around me - just no wind in my face, please! I'm harness trained rather than collar trained as my uniquely shaped head makes it too easy for me to slip out of a collar. I'm crate trained and my crate is my safe place. If you have a loving heart and a whole lot of patience, I might be the perfect dog for you. Just remember that I won't bond with you right away but give me time, and I just might surprise you. I've been at the ARP since 2/24/25 and am currently in foster. The Animal Rescue Project (www.animalrescueproject.org) is committed to the best possible veterinary care for the pets it rescues and it is looking for adopters who will be similarly committed. Adoptions are NOT first come, first served! We seek to choose the best fit for the approved adopter and pet. Please understand that these animals are still new to us and their needs and requirements can change at any time as we learn more about them. We will try our best to get them updated online as soon as possible. All dogs and puppies are given a general check-up when they enter our program. They receive medication to remove any intestinal parasites (worms), fleas, and ticks they may have. Dogs greater than six months of age are checked for heartworm. If heartworm positive, the Animal Rescue Project treats the disease. Dogs and pups receive all age-appropriate vaccinations for distemper, and dogs greater than four months of age are also vaccinated for rabies, in compliance with State of Michigan laws. All dogs are also microchipped. Most dogs and older puppies are spayed or neutered before adoption. In the case of puppies not old enough to be safely sterilized, a $50 deposit is required at the time of adoption and is refunded to the adopter with proof of sterilization. The Animal Rescue Project requires every adopter to establish an active relationship with a veterinarian no later than 10 days after adoption. Adopters will receive a plan for routine veterinary care at the time of adoption and are expected to work with their vet to complete the plan.
