HOW TO ADOPT: This dog is available for adoption by request. To schedule a time to meet this dog, please contact Cassandra at Cjohnson@arl-iowa.org. ---- Great dog with tons of potential who is looking for a special family who will continue working with hum to help hum gain confidence and learn that life is full of great things. If you're up to the challenge, read on! - Likes to take things slow with meeting new people and more a of a sit n' watch kind of dog - Has come a long way in the weeks we have been working with him - Has worked with our behavior team and loves those in his inner circle, but things such as petting from strangers, leashing up, and anything a "normal" dog would like can still be quite scary for him, so he will need continued help over time from his new family - Leaving interactions 100% up to him and using treats as rewards are great ways to gain him trust; he LOVES having the choice to interact and have his space - Has done well with calmer dogs while he's been in care and has followed them around learning to be brave from them. He would likely do best in a home with another dog to learn the ropes from - Needs a teens-and-up home right now, as young children are way too much for him. A mature, structured home would be perfect! - Since he's still learning to live with people, vet visits will have to be approached differently, so it will be important to talk with your veterinarian about ways to help him be most comfortable - He is still unsure about leashes and may benefit from a home that has a fenced yard or is okay with use of potty pads while he continues to grow in this area - Looking for a predictable home with very patient people who understand that it may take him not days but weeks to become completely comfortable. If you're willing to give him that time, you'll see, just as we have, that he is worth the wait! It will be incredibly rewarding to watch him become more trusting every day! The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most dogs we are only guessing at primary breed. We get to know each dog as an individual and do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not breed label. Primary Color: Tan Secondary Color: White Weight: 11.8 Age: 3yrs 0mths 3wks

Story
Meet Hera! This 2-year-old, 13.5-pound Chihuahua may be small in size, but she has a huge heart and an even bigger love for snuggling. Hera is a gentle soul who starts out shy, but once she feels safe, she blossoms into the most loyal, cuddly companion you could ever hope for. Hera adores children and loves nothing more than curling up next to them for naps. She’s also potty trained and crate trained, and while she was a little unsure before, she’s really come into her own in a loving home. She gets along well with other mild-mannered dogs, though she may be a little shy when first meeting them. While Hera doesn’t trust men right away, she’s not aggressive—just cautious and looking for patience and kindness. She would thrive in a calm, gentle home where she can continue to build confidence and share her quiet, devoted love. If you’re looking for a sweet, snuggly girl who’ll warm your heart (and your lap), Hera is ready to be your little shadow.

Meet Tater Tot! 🥔❤️ This adorable 7-year-old, 15-pound chihuahua mix is as sweet as his name suggests! Tater Tot is incredibly friendly with people and loves everyone he meets — he’s the kind of pup who brightens your day with just a tail wag. When it comes to other dogs, Tater Tot does best with calm, gentle female pups who won’t overwhelm him. He’s not a fan of rambunctious play, but he’s happy to coexist peacefully with the right canine companion. Tater Tot is simply looking for his perfect match — a home that appreciates his loving nature and gives him the cozy, content life he deserves. 💛 If you’re searching for a loyal little buddy who adores humans, Tater Tot might be the one!

Story
Meet Dove 🤍🕊️ A gentler soul simply does not exist. With her soft grey coat, dainty features, and adorable mutt magic (we’re guessing chihuahua/min pin), Dove is just as precious on the inside as she looks on the outside. At 2.5 years old and 16 perfect pounds, she’s the definition of a tender-hearted companion. Dove clearly knew love before life took a hard turn—after her family was evicted, she suddenly found herself searching for safety. Even with all the upheaval, she remains incredibly sweet, trusting, and eager to bond with her people. This little angel is: ✨ House trained ✨ Pee-pad trained ✨ Crate trained (though she’d very much prefer not to use one—she wants to be close to her person or another dog) ✨ Dog friendly, people loving, & endlessly gentle Her personality is the cutest mix of nervous + chill: she’ll play for a few minutes, then trot right back to your lap for comfort. She doesn’t chew things, doesn’t jump, doesn’t bark—she simply whines politely when she wants to be picked up or cuddled…which is basically always. 💁‍♀️ Dove is incredibly smart and treat-motivated. She learned doggy stairs in five minutes and now fully embraces her princess era, going up and down the bed like she owns the place. She’d make an amazing apartment dog, a wonderful match for a senior, and with her gentle nature, focus, and trainability, she could even be a fantastic therapy dog. Dove is ready to spend the holidays in a warm, loving home—snuggled close, soaking up the affection she adores. If you’re looking for a soft, easygoing sweetheart who wants nothing more than to love and be loved, Dove is your girl. 🤍
